Ok.. So I have decided.. I am in love with Jamie..

Ahhhhh.....Jamie!

I love these books. A friend got me hook two years ago and I read them through twice without stopping.

Don't you enjoy the way she writes? I'm on the second book right now (sixth or seventh reading) and there is a part in it that is so funny! Remember me when you get to this part......Who...who? She is so discriptive in the way she writes.

There are at least 2 more books (there are 5 so far) in this series.....eventually.

Her new book comes out in Nov....tis about Sir John Gray...you haven't gotten to him yet.

Enjoy!

I can't WAIT for the new book. My sister turned me on to these books a couple years ago, and I gave her the dirtiest look when she handed them to me. Romance novels? Debbie, PLEASE!!!! gag.

She insisted, and I am soooo glad she did. Marvelous books. And Jamie? ::thud:: (I have to stop keeling over in lust)

Actually, the latest published is the pre-civil war book. I just received mine last week from Amazon.....

Ummm - it's pre-revolutionary, not pre- civil. Minor point, but about 100 years difference... Claire might be a time traveler, but as far as I know, neither are particulary long lived. If you're referring to "The Fiery Cross".

I'm going home now. I'm getting too picky.

My mind was half gone yesterday and I had a 50/50 shot. I suppose I guessed incorrectly. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Sigh.. I haven't gotten to start the 2nd one.. but hey.. You never know.. I will probably still be in lust, or at least infatuated...

08-14-2003, 12:09 PM
I purchased Outlander a while ago, but have not gotten around to it yet. What is the order of her books?

How many are there?

Thanks!!!

Mairi the Herbwench
08-14-2003, 12:29 PM
There are 5 - starting with:
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross

And yet to come - at least 3 more. Her official website is http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/gabaldon.html

Not that I'm a fan or anything...

08-14-2003, 01:24 PM
why thank you!!!
Know I know so I will start the first one since I already owned it. I was always hesitant to start it since i knew it was a series but never knew if it was the first...
the copy I have never listed if she had any other books!

There are going to be at least 7 books in the OUTLANDER series. The author has also said there will be "spinoff" books about some of the people in the series...such as Sir John Gray (this one is due out in November), Master Raymond and Jamie's parents, Brian and Ellen...I think. I really enjoy these books and tell everyone I know to read them if they get the chance.

I agree with everyone else. I know that's silly to post, but I have been hooked on the series for years. I read Outlander a couple years or so after it was published and have been hooked and watching for sequels ever since. I don't even want to think about how many times I have read the books. I highly recommend the series. :)

Oh, geez, I adore the 'Outlandish' series. I have to admit a lot of the "people watching" I do on my subway commute is spent looking for Jamie. :)

I have to say that I liked the earliest books best -- Outlander is my favorite, followed pretty much in series order. I think the last one, "The Fiery Cross," was in serious need of a good editor. That seems to happen a lot with successful authors -- they're edited pretty well in the beginning, but once they've proved they can sell books the publisher adopts a "hands-off" policy -- not always A Good Thing. Honestly, if I wanted to read about breastfeeding or the contents of dirty diapers, I'd read What to Expect When You're Expecting!!!!

OH how yummy!! I love those books.. i have bought all of them and am waiting for the next one...
and I do agree with the editing issue.. she does drone a bit during this book.. kinda like the characters are getting older. :haloslip:

I agree. This is a series that needs to be read in order to fully follow the story - it is linear. DON'T junp to the "Fiery Cross"!

I am not sure really.. but I will see if I can figure anything out this book.. Perhaps she is a closet erotica writer and just can't get through a book with no nipples.. =D

As I spent the evening with Front Page, I am only on page 130.. But I shall catch up with you here soon.. unless you finish the book..

Well all i can say is be prepared to laugh your butt off in places :) I want to go to scotland now because my compleate lack of tact will be less noticable there. :) I learned that from the books LOL

As far as tips go, I would say to remember to notice even apparently small or meaningless details...such as the ghostly scotsman in the very beginning, or names of individuals... if you do, the story becomes much more rich and ethereal. Also, DO buy them, not borrow, cause you will want to read them more than once.

Lady Alasse
10-01-2003, 01:05 AM
such as the ghostly scotsman in the very beginning,

Call me really stupid but who in the heck was that? I am on the forth chapter of the second book and I still don't know who that was. LOL

You wouldn't happen to have a brother would you?? You know.. Somewhere down in the south.. ;) One not taken?? I think that I could get sued to a guy who reads these books and can appreciate the raw emotion that she pours into these pages..

I got a little steamed in a couple of the scenes, but nuffin like when I was reading Erotica at work.. that had me squirming in my seat.. I can't do that any more.. Ok.. so I won't input that thought that was just going through my head that actually made my face flush..

Bonnie

I love the steamy scenes as well, but Laurell Hamilton has got a few steam worthy scenes in her books that just set me to burning. Anita and Jean-Claude's first sexual encounter? OMG!!!!!

But back to Jamie and Claire....Le sighe.

My sister bought the first three or four for me for Christmas one year. I looked at her and raised my eyebrows. I DON'T do romance.

That night, bored, no books at hand at my mom's house, I picked the first book up. I started reading at like 10 pm. I didn't put it down til around 4 am....

emalia
10-01-2003, 11:58 AM
That was my thing too.. I don't do romance, that is why I buy Erotica.. Now I do cause they are mindless.. Favs still include Forensic thrillers and Alex Cross books. Dean Koontz..

gardo
10-01-2003, 12:15 PM
See I dont see these books ca be classified as purely romance, more like historicle fantacy. Dont get me wrong the romace is a big part of the books but not the .... well maybe it is.... huh 8)

Bonnie

They're not romance novels per say. They are better classified as fictional literature...much the same as Gone With the Wind, Clan of the Cave Bears, Wuthering Heights...

all have romantic overtones, but all are great literature...classics in their times.

this is possibly my favorite series (after, of course dragonriders of pern) i laugh, cry, get turned on, get pissed, everything--i will admit however the first time i read them i skimmed over some of the historical parts of DIA---ive read mine so many times its time for new copies...the pages are falling out

I like to read for escape mostly..... I love the romantic comedy/mystery...lighthearted...a bit steamy and laugh out loud. I found the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich filled the bill perfectly! I highly reccomend them if you read for the sheer enjoyment of it!

I had a male friend tell me once that he loved to watch women read..... we spent alot of time at the public pool with our kids...he said he could always tell when they were at the "steamy" part of the book because they would fidgit or cross thier legs and kick thier foot! OMG this made me laugh and now self -conscious while i get that warm feeling from a particularly hot passage. I still say men should read these books and forget the Penthouse Forum....or Maxim and such.....they would do alot better learning the Romantic techniques from these books!!

and Gardo..... you may be the perfect Rogue..... you can enjoy steamy and romantic with NO threat to your manhood.....AND you think sparklies are a good reward! Go man Go!! Your lady is very lucky!

I know that feeling, reading can be a couples activity as well.. there are certain things that I read and have flash back to acting them out, or seeing how long I could read aloud while um.. yeah.. but they still illicit that foot kicking responce.

An I have to agree.. (as said above, when inquiring if Gardo has a brother) Yes.. Gardo is the perfect Rogue.. and she is a VERY VERY lucky woman!

Gazing out to sea
Standing stones of the Orkney Isles
Bring my love to me

Bonnie

No spoilers, but I finished it. No Jamie, although his name gets mentioned...

It most definitely IS a 'short' story about Lord John. I'd like to have had her cover more than just the Private Matter in the book, but it was pretty good.

I figured you girls might get a kick out of this...

I was nuzzling with my Wife (Goddess I love that I can say that now) and feeling frisky when she told me that it wasn't a good idea and check teh calendar. So I do the math in the head and in turn say "oh goin through your coarses are we" Her responce being "Okay you have been reading those books too much now".
Don't know why I shared this but I thought it funny how a book could start influencing other areas in life 8)

I don't remember where it is in the book (I think it is in book two, but I am on reading 7 or eight now), but has anyone read the part where Jamie is telling Claire what happened to Ian when his wooden leg got broken? ok, after you are all done reading the series (so far) or even if you're not, pick up the "Outlandish Companion" It was written a few years ago - so some things are a bit dated (like the excerpt from her "latest" book, which was "fiery cross" at the time - but she does go into the next book as well!) but it gives a great insight into Diana Gabaldon, who she is, how she started writing and etc. Plus tons of stuff about the characters and etc. it's also a lot of fun to read!

Oh and by the way, the books on tape of the series are really good too! (That's how I got my husband to "read" them! Then he got hooked too!)

Lady Alasse
10-19-2003, 08:46 PM
I am Finially done with the frist three books!!! Took me forever!! LOL Voyager was okay but I was thinking that maybe twenty years was a little far to go between Claire and Jamie seeing each other. I mean I want to know what happened to the other little characters that they had met in the second one like Master Raymond. Ahhh well I will get over it. Now On to Drums of Auteum (Oh lord can't spell)

I read that there will be other books about some of the "side people" in the OUTLANDER series.
There will be a book about Master Raymond...who by the way is a time traveler also.
There is supposed to be a prequel about Jamie's parents.
There is the Lord John and the Secret Matter that has just come out.
Oh...my memory is failing me, but there might be another book that I'm forgetting.
I do hope Diana lives and writes for at least as long as I'm alive!

Having read (several times) the Outlander series, I was wondering if anyone here has read her other book "Lord John Grey and the Private Matter" - or whatever it's title is??? Just curious as to whether it is as good as Outlander started out to be - and any news on the next/last book of the Outlander series? Anyone know? {hugs} cc

AnnaFaerie
11-10-2003, 10:08 AM
I bought the LORD JOHN book and it is good. It is very short....she said she thought she was writing a short story and her publisher said this was the size of a normal book. I got mine cheap on Ebay.

Her next book...A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES is due out next year. It is not the last book in the series. Diana said there will be at least one more after this book.

There are going to be other books about the people in the series. Let me see if I can remember them all.....a prequel about Jamie's parents....a book about Master Raymond (who time travels also).....and another one that I don't remember who/what it is about.

Let's all hope Diana outlives us and continues to write forever more!

Bonnie
11-10-2003, 11:56 AM
yeah..Lord John is easily digestible in one or two long sittings. I think I did it in three. Damn kids.

Can't wait for the next Jamie and Claire book, though.

AnnaFaerie
11-10-2003, 03:08 PM
I can hardly wait for it myself.

I just read where Diana said the Lord John books are going to be a series also. He is one of her favorite people in the OUTLANDER series so it seems reasonable that she would write more about him. Personally I would like to know more about Master Raymond.

Oh and I read that we will know a lot more about what Ian went through when he was with the Indians.

Lady Alasse

I agree I liked Ian :) I have read a bit more into the Firey Cross and it is okay. I don't know if I really care for there daughter much (No offence to all you who do. She just isn't my cup of tea LOL) I thought Lord John was okay but I really liked Master Raymond

He is the "father" of Williem and he is the second Man to have the hots for Jamie. He was the overseer of the prison where Jamie was sent after Culloden (Did I spell that right???)

And there's also a short story in "Legends II" {a scifi compilation} about John Grey. Very well done, more character development. All goodness.

I was hooked on her about 8 years ago when I found Dragonfly in Amber at a local bookstore. (Yes, I was 12.) Have devoured it all since. I try to explain her to my friends as "historical fiction scifi romance"... It's difficult.
