(Apologies for the very long cross-posts)

As you probably know, one of Local 42's major charities is breast cancer. Over the past three years, members of Local 42's TeamWench have walked in two Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, 60-mile walks and one Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (2-Day, marathon-and-a-half). In those three years, we’ve raised over $38,000 for the breast cancer cause! We couldn’t have done it without a lot of you, though. Maybe you've come to one of our “Save the Boobies” Pirate Feasts. Maybe you've donated something to the raffle, or even supported one of TeamWench's walkers with a donation. Now, we have a question for you: Are you ready for the challenge of your life?

Next year, there will be two major walks for breast cancer in the Washington DC area. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a 2-day walk, and will be held on May 1-2, 2004. You have the option of walking the distance of a marathon – 26.2 miles – over two days, or walking the entire 26.2 miles on the first day and following up with a 13.1 half-marathon on the second. (For more info, go to http://www.avonwalk.org). The 2004 Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and will be held August 13-15, 2004. This is a 60 mile walk over three days. The route hasn’t been determined, but in the past has been from Frederick to Washington and from Baltimore to Washington. (For more info, go to http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=30112)

If you’ve ever thought about doing an event like this, now’s your chance. TeamWench needs, wants and welcomes new walkers for either event! You don't even have to be a wench – last year, GarGar and Lady Kay's husband George walked in the Avon Breast Cancer 3Day. (And even though it wasn't for Boobies, Ralph/Sasquatch walked for TeamWench in the Out of the Darkness walk last year.)

Although there is a substantial minimum amount of money you must raise to participate in an event like this ($1,800 for the Avon 2Day or $2,000 for the Komen 3Day), remember that not only does TeamWench have people who are very experienced in this kind of fundraising and who are more than willing to share ideas and techniques, but the “Save The Boobies” Pirate Feast was specifically designed to raise funds for our breast cancer walkers. Though we can't promise to raise your entire requirement, with your help (meaning you’ll work for it!) we can probably come up with a good chunk of it.

If you want to raise money for a great cause, challenge yourself, and do something good for others, join us in the fight to Save the Boobies. We have a yahoo group set up for all TeamWench activities – to subscribe, e-mail “[email protected] We’ll put you to work, but it will be some of the most satisfying work you’ve ever done!

(Please note that these are Washington, DC events. If you would like to walk in DC and work at the Pirate Feast (in Adelphi, Maryland) in March, please join us! Although we would like to see wenches from all over the U.S. participate in walks in other cities, at this time we can only support walkers doing the DC events.)
