View Full Version : Mushroom Pasty (mushroom pie)

Mushroom Pasty

1 ½ lbs. whole button or sliced mushrooms (or a variety)
2 tlbs. olive oil
1 cup grated or shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, or a combination)
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. ginger
¼ tsp. pepper
1 9″ pie crust (lid optional)


Bake the bottom crust.
Saute the mushrooms.
Drain, then add oil, cheese, and spices.
Mix well.
Place in the pie shell, add and slit lid if desired.
Bake at 350° for 35–40 minutes, or until pastry is a golden brown.

**for an easy side sauce, I mix yellow mustard and mayonnaise, to your own taste.

My daughter's friend came over one day after I had made it.
He claimed he absolutely *HATED* mushrooms.
I asked him, out of politeness, if he would just try a small bite.
He ended up eating 3/4 of a 9" deep dish pie. (I add extra mushrooms to it)

*snort* At least you did not ask if that was the thing the strippers wear.

In the part of the UP I am from, the pasty is just a part of the culture. Something that you get every Wednesday from the St. Sebastian church. Many of the people who come up to visit ask "What's a paste - ee (phonetically, that is)? " Then we have to explain that a "past - ee" is a combo of beef, pork, potatoes and onions baked in a dough that is folded over. Sort of looks like a calzone".

And they are great with ketchup, but never gravy.
