View Full Version : The NYRF ad....a poll
Because I want to know....
Who else heard that awful ad they've been running on the radio and do you like it or not?
I think it sucks. And it may very well be why *some* people have the wrong idea about how they can treat we women who wear bodices and dress like wenches. I do not appreciate the "bodacious babes in bodices" or the *almost* mention of hooters (the guy starts saying it, but gets as for as hoo before the woman cuts him off) being used as a way to promote the faire. It encourages people to think of all of us as one of the various faire attractions. In essence making us out to be objects. I mean as has been discussed a gazillion times before..Yes, I know people are *bound* to look at my "assets" in a bodice and that's fine, but for REC to *promote* it?! It's shameful. I mean I know they wanted some more mature elements at faire this season, but really....
Is that all the faire is about? I mean yeah there's some woman in the ad too who mentions the other things like shows, food, crafts, etc....but it is *quite* obvious that the emphasis was being put on the women and what we wear as a way to directly get men to come to the faire. As evident from some of the lame asses that *did* show up at Tux this year that may not be the best way to attract men to the faire. I mean how do you tell a man to *not* get all up in your face when the very ad that got him there made it seem like that's acceptable?
In addition the Bill and Ted/Spicolli sounding stoner dude who kept mentioning the babes is just lame! I mean how 80's is that?! I'm sure whoever thought of it felt it was a good comic element...However, that person should seriously re-think working in the advertising field. (Maybe they were just going for the theory that annoying ads stay in people's minds longer...)
I hope to everything one can hope to, that they change it for next year.
I suggest they let Lars and his radio ad crew for Stockwood write and record their commercial....then it will actually be funny.

I haven't heard it, but it sounds awful!
As bad as the Instant Knight just add shining armor advertising they used in the print ads.

Yeah you'll all like it, but it's just as sexist.

OK, yeah. That was pathetic too. It's like we're all meat to them, anything to get people in the gate. And then they wonder why there are problems like the ones we've had this season. I guess they figure once we have your gate fee, it doesn't matter if we have to kick you out...
~V~
and we sometimes wonder why weirdos show up expecting sex and all kinds of faire perks!!!!!

I always thought PARF radio ads were kinda dorky, but they usually have my dear friend Kirk singing in them, so I must love them if only for his sake.
Have any of you written to the NYRF management to express your dissatisfaction? I mean, all the crap that's happened this season should be more than enough evidence that they're going down a dangerous and stupid path. Maybe they should be told more strenuously?

Okay, honestly I haven't heard it, so I can't give an educated opinion. But even not having heard it I could once again bring up the point that if you don't WANT to be associated with it, then disassociate yourself from it.
But see....being called a bodacious babe wouldn't bother me.
Or then to the asses of whom you speak you could always just ask if they believe everything they hear and then collect a large sum of money from them for purchase of a ticket on the reality train.
Tink sweetie, I understand what bothers you, but don't take it so personally baby....no matter what anyone says it's YOU who's in charge of YOUR life....that's all that should really matter.
Ya know I love ya.

Ummmm.....my point was to express my opinion and critique of the ad and looking to see what everyone else thinks of it.
I don't take it personally. God sometimes I think people think I'm *that* fragile and sensitive. Really, I'm not. Trust me.
I just think the ad sucks and I gave my reasons why plus an observation, albeit speculation, that maybe the ad has something to do with why certain morons thinking it's okay to take icky pics of us for example.
I don't mind someone calling me a bodacious babe either. That wasn't my point. I just think that there are so many people that worked hard to put on awesome shows and make great crafts and to have that over-shadowed by hooters....is just ridiculous.
Oh and Lionel...I saw that stupid knight thing on the site and yeah I think it's just as stupid as the ad and sexist. Another thing I vote for going for next year.
Well, I still go by my statement. I find it funny that Tux pushes boobies on people, then tosses them out for being perverts.
Faire already has that weird reputation of sex and orgies and such, so for them to push hoo...I mean bodacious babes in bodices seems kind of hypocritical....
still hate the ad, it is very cheezy....

Here in my office we have CBS FM on all day so I've gone all season hearing the ad that breaks down the faire to being all this great stuff for just $2 an hour. I'm just glad to not be hearing it anymore.

I finally heard it last nite.
Wow. It sucked.
I'm not offended by anything in the ad, cause, well...I really could care less what people think about me and their dopey preconceived notions about faire. But that's just me.
But on general SUCK factor... :pfft: REC definitely needs advertising help.

REC needs business help in general.
Write in folks. Many of you pay good money to come to the faire and your opinion counts.
And so if it's two dollars an hour, can I come for 2 hours to see thie Crimson Pirates and the Rogue Show and pay $4?

Tink sweetie, I'm sorry if I read your initial post wrong....when you said you didn't appreciate the "bodaciouse babe" comment coupled by when you complained about REC promoting people looking at your "assets" I assumed it meant you had taken it a bit personally.
Don't forget I STILL haven't heard the ad, and I don't work there, so I guess I probably wouldn't be as critical about it even if I had heard it. You work there, so fair enough for you to feel like it effects you directly...because it does.
I don't think your "fragile and sensitive" and I understood you were curious to others opinions, and I never said you shouldn't have posted your poll, it just read diferently than you intended to me.
But then that's a whole other discussion we've had here many times.
No worries Aries my'love. You know you're always good with me.

Even without the ad, which I think is just stupid and a waste of time, we are gonna get the morons who have no conception of how to behave properly when faced with a woman in a bodice/corset whatever. And I mean men and women morons. Lets not forget, women can be just as big of an idiot as the next man. Some of the most shocking things said about the way I look in a bodice came from a woman. Also, those same women are likely to make loud comments about tights and kilts.
My point is, it's gonna happen, it has always happened and stupid ad or not, we're still gonna have it happen. We're still gonna have idiots who need to be escorted from faire after they've had too much to drink and forget where the line is.
I just don't let it get to me. When someone starts crossing the line with me I take that as free rein to verbally abuse them and point out just how ridiculous they are!

For a place that wants a more famliy show, they are going about it wrong... but come one, look at our own wench logo, and what we wear.... the add sucks, but from a business standpoint, it is what sells... and what sells is what makes money.
Not right, just is

The ad is in poor taste and targets a market of 20-30 something male with disposable income. In light of the fact that this is supposed to be a family show the ad is poor. However, it works. The ad brings attention to the fact that faire is here and open for business. If as participants we truly want NYRF to be known as a place for family fun then we need to make that clear to REC before next years ad campaign begins (generally a week before faire starts ...*minor grumble*).

They ran it out here in CA for the last half of Southern. It actually made political commentary as a purposeful regression of how women are viewed with an attempt to sell tickets. The ad was pulled from its heavy play schedule on at least one radio station.

Yeah, but back then, it was a big ol' magazine, not a newsprint thing like they have now.
Though I have to say I was on site yesterday and saw the new one-- it's pretty cool. TONS of stuff in it.

I actually haven't heard it but on opeining weekend, I counted at least 3 people who took my picture without permission and one guy inparticular who asked, but then proceeded to take a picture of just my cleavage. Like I couldn't see the camera pointing a little too low for my face. I gave him an earful...
There's always been crap like that going on, but the ad makes it sound like it's almost okay, if not expected to partake in such behavior. It pisses me off. Look, if you wanna take a picture of my boobies, just say so. If you're honest with me, I'm probably gonna let you...

I just had to ask....you all realize that I posted this poll before LAST season right?
Funny that someone decided to give it new life for *this* season.
As for the ad, it sucks. Plain and simple and yeah one of the biggest gripes I had was the whole wenches line. Especially since at that time, we had mr photo happy freakazoid running around faire. No one was amused.
At any rate, I wish they'd go back to the old "Spend a day with our knights" motto that was used in the TV ad they used to run. Who knows maybe that ad still runs. I haven't seen it on TV in years. I think the copy from it though would be a good radio spot. It promoted the appropriate things about faire...shows, crafts, artisans, the renaissance atmosphere to immerse you in. None of this pandering to pubescent to 20 something males who are horny and want to get drunk and ogle the women who work there.

Nice view, but more for a Viagra or underwear commercial, don't you think?
All of this sounds sexist and none of it sounds Renaissance faire-ish to me. Definitely not what would lure me to the faire - far from it. Especially with children/grandchildren in tow - that would definitely be a deterrent for me! [no offense meant to anyone!]
The advertising person/s/committee should know. Good luck!
