Bridget Lederle is a lighthouse keeper in 1800's Wisconsin. One stormy night, she rescues a sailor, only to discover that he is a sorcerer from another world, the world known as Isavalta. He tells her that she has the power to save his empress and his world, and that he has come to take her back with him. She agrees to go, having nothing to tie her to Wisconsin since the death of her infant, out-of-wedlock child. But once she arrives in Isavalta, she quickly comes to see that all is not what Valin claimed, and that he may only have brought her to serve as a tool for his schemes.
