Okay guys I am new to orgainized faire ging groups, so I as yet have not gotten a faire name. I was wondering if you pick your own or one is given to you by your friends?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, your Faire name can come from anywhere, really. Things you like, animals you like, people you like, stories you like.... You can even reengineer your own name with a funky spelling and have fun that way. What are your interests? What intrigues you? What do you want your name to say about you?

Have fun with it. just think of it as reinventing yourself in a new and fun way.

BTW, how do you feel about the name Melanthe? It was a character in a book I once read....

Just a thought!

It means the lily among the thorns. its a take of off a latin phrase
"lilius interspinus"

I also have been wrestling with the faire name thing. I came up with Cera O'Cuse (since I went to Syracuse University), but I think I may keep that for a different persona. I pulled out my Star Trek encyclopedia 2 days ago and flipped to a page, and voila, there it was..... Surata. Different, cool sounding, and obscure enough that nobody else will have it. Think I might keep it! What do you all think?

I go by a couple of different things. The main one now is Belladonna Sinclair. Its the last character that I played at Largo that I loved dearly. I still answer, albeit begrudgingly, to Phoebe. Again, another character I played. I also got into the habit of being called MOM long before I was an actual mom.

I don't use a Faire name. What you see is what you get, RL or Faire, and the name might as well follow that pattern.

My faire name is either Cousin Mairi or Auntie Mairi, depending on the age of the other person. Mairi is a rough gaelic version of Mary, my "real" name. I chose it because I can remember it... The "herbwench" portion comes from what I do in Clann Tartan - my usual hiding place. I'm the healer for the group, do demos on medicine in 1630 Scotland, and try to avoid being labeled a witch - a Very Bad Thing is 1630 Scotland. I also make and sell an herbal liquor to friends - my grand dad was sheriff of Cowley County, KS, and his primary job at the time was buting up stills. I think it's perfect that his granddaughter is selling 'shine... I think he's approve!:haloslip:

Riah

I think Riah (rye-ah) is interesting (even if it is my actual name) But it's true that your alternate name could come from anywhere.

My unofficial nickname is Pussnboots. One of my favorite stories as a kid, and from:
"Pussycat wasn't a kitten.
Not as dumb as they thought.
She had a good head on her shoulders,
A feeling that couldn't be bought.
The royalty made her an offer,
If she'd keep trouble at bay,
They'd give her the money and diamonds,
Be Queen for the day.

Pussycat, Pussy cat where have you been? I've been to London, and now I'm the Queen.
Sittin' pretty, I don't wear suits, and the mice all call me Pussnboots."

Of course the only thing actually wrong with introducing myself as "Puss" or "Boots" Is that I don't own any thigh high boots. :wah: So I can't help but think it would be a little silly.

So Riah is who I stay. :meow:

Mel-

My SCA name and my faire name (Abigail Chandler of Caithness) are the same, for two reasons. 1. I don't think I would come unless called Abigail (Its my real name too, and only my dad calls me Abigail, but only when I'm in trouble). 2. It's hard enough to remember 1 name.

Orginally I wanted to be Kirin (like the beer) but after tasting the beer, I changed my mind. A few people still call me Kirin, and I'll respond, but most everyone else calls me Abigail, or Abby.

Chandler comes from Heathers, the Lead Heather's last name was Chandler and since i am such a strong leader/bitch ( can you say Alpha female??) and its my favorite movie, I chose that. I wanted Sawyer (Veronica sawyer was Winona Ryders character), but I couldn't document it. And as for Of Caithness, my personna is from Caithness and everyone else in the household is Of Caithness so I just tacked it on.

Wow, thats alot of explanation just for little old me.....
