EDIT a link might be nice :) http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?page=wnsimp.cfm /EDIT
So, jumping on the PotC bandwagon, Simplicity has come out with a new "pirate" pattern 4914. The women's "pirate" pattern is vomit inducing. *short* a-line skirt, bloomer style pants, neither with anything resembling enough fabric (even though both call for like 3 yds of fabric, I have no clue how they make 3yds of fabric into a not very full, just below the knee skirt!), a weird sort of faux lace up, princess seamed shirt with belled sleeves and a bizzare triangular inset at the neck. Oh, and to add insult to injury, it has a zipper up the back!
and just in case you can't figure it out yourself, it has a pattern for a square scarf and a rectangular sash. *rolls eyes*
Then mens costume 4923 is *much* better. Nary a zipper in sight, I don't think it even has elastic in the waist of the pants. A good basic shirt pattern, both lace up and with a cravat, a nice short and long button up vest (although I'd leave the back ties off on both) and a lovely "pirate" frock coat with huge turned up sleeves. The pants have hook closures and buttons at the legs. here is a somewhat distressing mention of a 2" piece of 1/4" wide velcro for the shirts and pants.... I have no idea what that's for, but you could probably leave it out.
Also new this fall is what I can only assume is a Van Helsing inspired pattern 4916... or possibly League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but I don't think so...
2 coats with detatchable capes (one with notched collar and one with a stand up collar and frogs or buckles) and a shorter notched collar coat. The image for the notched collar coat on the website looks like Kid Rock, except I think its a woman. Also included is a basic vest and a jabbot. *shrug* looks OK, but I don't know Victorian-esque outerwear, so I really don't know.

Hancocks is having a sale too.
Also...don't forget that you can take your coupons for the pattern sales (or any other sales) to Walmart (for those of us that still shop there) and they will honor the 99 cent price.
I live out in the boonies of TX and Walmart is a 30 minute drive and the other fabric stores are are an hour and more away. With gas prices what they are it saves me quite a lot sometimes.

This is why I always draft my own patterns. The commercially available stuff is either totally dreadful, like the Simplicity, or too complex. So I design everything myself, draft the fabric shapes onto poster board stock, cut them out and trace onto banner paper, which I then pin to the fabric for cutting.

I often use simplicity patterns as a "jumping off point." Well... "often" is too strong. I use 5574 (men's) doublet pattern as a starting point for *my* dresses, that way I don't have to do it from scratch, Helps that there are no curved seams in the body, and the sleeve has the right seam down the back of the arm instead of the inside. Planning on using it again as a base to make husband's waffenrock...make the front all one piece, laced on the side, *much* more fabric in the "skirt" and raise the waist band by about 2 1/2 inches... again, I'm mostly drafting my own, but it gives me a place to start. *shrug*

I didn't realize they would do this!!! Will have to check into that!
I was hoping they would do something like Elizabeth's Swann's gowns for the women... was very disappointed when we saw the Women's pattern in the Halloween book a few weeks ago. :x
Men's pattern is pretty cool though, so they got it half right, at least!

When you go to Walmart with your sales flyer...if it is McCalls patterns on sale for 99 cents then you have to buy McCalls patterns. I'm not sure if all stores pay attention to the limit on patterns on the sale flyer because I bought 9 patterns when the flyer for Hancock's said "limit 5".
If your checker says they can't honor the sale price...ask them to check for sure. The checkers may not always know Walmart does honor sales if they haven't worked there very long. I had a checker say she couldn't honor the $.99 price on the patterns because they rang up at $18.00+. I asked her to check on it please and the manager said of course they would honor the sale price. The moral to this boring story is this....Don't let the checkers tell you Walmart doesn't do this.

I was thinking the same thing... how bout we each try it and compare notes? ^_^
I sense a Monty Python scene coming on... fishy fishy fishy fish....
I was also very disappointed that they didn't have Ms. Swan's outfits. I love the chemise she wears with the red dress... the one with the spiral laced sleeves. But at least the guys are starting to get some decent patterns. It's about time, ne?
