Well there I was. It was 1:30 and I'd just got home from work. I wanted to go to the Faire but it was pissing it down with rain. After a few minutes contemplation I said "Screw it...I'm GOIN'!" So I throw my stuff in my truck and take off. Even with the heavy rain and the relatively slow driving...I still got there in about 25 minutes (I forget how close I am).

Now...it LOOKS like there's still people going in and out so I figure I'm good. I pull into the 5 dollar parking lot but there's no one there to take my money. "No big deal" I thought. Maybe they just expected a low turnout so nobody wants to stand out in the rain for the odd car that comes through. I pull up next to a car with a couple in the process of changing INTO their garb so I begin to get dressed and chat with them a little. They weren't Guild members but they both had cool outfits.

Then...a family walks over and starts climbing into a minivan parked nearby. The woman starts talking to another patron and I overhear her saying "Yeah...it's closing." I was like "Excuse me?" She said it was closing because they'd gotten a tornado warning! Lousy tornadoes!!!

RRRRRR!!!!!! At least I was only HALFWAY dressed. If I'd gotten all the way dressed and made it to the gate before being turned back...I'd a been pissed! Of course the couple next to me WERE pissed 'cause they'd driven over an hour and a half!

Sooooo...I DID show up but unfortunately didn't get to meet anyone. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow (I think) so I'll try again!!!

Regards,
Pathos

I thought Tux was open rain, shine, hellfire, damnation, whatever! How did they throw out the patrons?

The weather scared me away today but I'll be there tomorrow! Yay for some nice weather (finally)

I guess I picked a good day to leave the faire job early to go to the full-time job. Though I was still soaked and freezing by the time I left at 1 p.m. The rest of the faire season had best be nice, no rain, not too hot and not too cold.

The faire is open rain or shine, but not hellfire, tornadoes, lightning, etc...

With the low turnout, we'll all be much better off getting the patrons out and giving them rain passes, so they'll come back. Hopefully on a nice day and buy lots of stuff.

I for one was thrilled to be home by 3:30 and taking a nap. ON A SATURDAY. JOY.

They should really print somewhere that it closes due to lightening, tornadoes and other natural disasters because I too was trapped in the parking lot with a six year old arguing with me that it says on the sign open rain or shine. I am praying for no rain next weekend.

Oh, now this just seems like common sense to me. It's one thing to be on site, or having it rain with a thunderstorm passing through...but do you *really* think REC should open itself up to the potential for a huge load of liability when a *tornado warning* has been issued for the area? Is the risk of injury or death of a patron, playtron, vendor or performer worth keeping the faire open?

The risk of a tornado, no matter how small (and yes, there have been tornados in the southern NY/northern NJ area -- just ask my friends who lost part of their porch when a tornado hit Sussex County NJ in 1990 -- just a few blocks from my house at the time) just isn't worth the risk.

Explain to your six year old that a tornado's just a wee bit different from a rainstorm.

Think about tornados at a faire for a moment... Think of the telephone poles with swords embedded in them a mile down the road... I for one hightailed it out of there...

I wasn't serious about them printing that the faire should close during a tornado. I was just joking about how hard it is argueing with a six year old. Sorry, if you thought I was suggesting that the faire should risk lives during bad weather to stay open.
Hopefully the weather will be better next weekend.

My heart goes out to you. It has been an extremely weird year for weather conditions across the USA.

Tornado weather? Lightning and thunder? RAIN? You should have participated this spring at Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie Texas for all of the above!!!

Having lived on the East Coast in northern NJ I can understand the rarity of such circumstances.

Hope you have a good season regardless of the weather,
Isa

We had frighteningly bad thunder, lightning, and rain at PARF Saturday morning, but by the afternoon, it was glorious. They mentioned in the merchant's meeting that evening that y'all'd been shut down by a tornado warning, and I called just about everyone I knew to make sure no one'd gotten blown and/or washed away.

All is well now?

All appears to be well and yesterday was a glorious day in the shire! The storm didn't hit us until about noon on Saturday, and it was miserable. Driving home, you could see the lightening hitting the mountains. Very pretty, but still...

Glad y'all had a good weekend at PARF... see ya in October!

Sick and twisted as I may be....I LOVED that storm. I only wish I could've taken off my bodice and ran around in it. BUT I was too busy trying to keep our tarp from collapsing. *sigh*

Glad everyone was ok and let's hope that filled our rain quota for the season!

The rain is great, even at faire. And I really do enjoy a good thunderstorm. It's just so uncomfortable to be wet in garb. Next time the weather threatens rain like that, or even just more than a sprinkle, I'm wearing the danes. That way, I can sing and dance around in the rain. :singdanc:

I was actually psyched about it raining. A few people had told me that rain is bad for business but it can be fun hanging out in it. Therefore I was bummed to see it banging up when I got there.

Oh well...I went back Sunday. The traffic sucked getting there but at least I got to meet Tink and Dmitri. :D

It was ironic...we've been bugging our friends to come up to faire for weeks and the day they finally make it, faire closes. We still had fun hanging out in the booth until everything was officailly closed. And Sunday definately made up for the lousy weather Saturday.

I could be wrong, but I believe it's actually a law that large public outdoor events like faire *have* to close in the event of a natural disaster warning.

In truth...it was the local police who told management to shut down due to the tornado warnings. I do think management would've to do so on their own as well though. It was just too dangerous liability wise to have people walking around faire in those conditions and even after the rain, a lot of the shows would not have been able to go on safely due to the slippery ground.....except maybe the mud show. *g*

The kids had a blast in the rain storm...and the novelty of it was fine, but when all is said and done we took a large financial hit that we really cannot afford to have.Any more encores of this weather and we'll REALLY be needing a paddle! Here's hoping for cool breezes and sunshine every weekend for the rest of the run! :sigh:

All shows had been cancelled about a half an hour before they decided to shut down. Crimson Pirates figured we had a captive audience and we were mostly dry, so we'd just sing under the shelter til someone told us to stop.

There were warnings? I though it was just a watch...and didn't even know they were closing...I was over at the body painting across from the pony rides (in danes  ) and Vann had just finished painting my whole back when the downpour started. We (mom and I) stayed there for a while, then I got our umbrella out of the car...and wandered about until one of the rose boys told me that it was closed due to a tornado watch...I'd passed grounds and security a few times and wondered why they didn't say anything.

I figured Chris would never shut down come hell or high water unless the police made him. So that's what I figured happened. Mom managed to buy a bodice before getting kicked out though. We both grabbed comp tickets even though we have season passes...

It was a watch and then a warning Luc... One touched down in Watertown... Funny thing was they were getting everyone out and it was begining to clear up.. and was beautiful the rest of the day..
