View Full Version : Incubus Dreams: initial (partial) impressions...

Well- today's mail brought my review copy of Incubus Dreams, the latest Anita Blake- *big* thick book, 658 pages and I'm just about 200 or so in already...

First overall reaction so far? Wow. here's another one I'm not gonna part with.

a bit of thought and soul-searching brought me the next reaction: a lesser author would not be able to pull this off- had this been anyone else I could easily have seen myself murmmering aloud several times "Oh, Come on! You expect me to play along with this?"

Happily, Hamilton's writing manages to simultaneously subtly insinuate itself into the reader's mind, *and* steamroller over the conscious objections... She's *that* good. The roller-coaster ride (at least so far) is too enjoyable to resist.

From a perfectly technical standpoint- as a veteran bookseller- I *know* that it gets more and more difficult to sell a series title to those who haven't read the prior books- and that may be the only downside to the title... (that and the fact that most genre readers would rather spend the same amount of cash for several paperbacks rather than a single hardcover)

Ok- enough babbling- if I log off now, I can go back to *reading*!

Oh! for those wondering... my prize copies of "Jonathan Strange" didn't make it to me in time for today's deadline, so actual newspaper publication of the review has been delayed at least two weeks- luckily I had another review and prize-copies waiting in the wings... "To Rule In Amber" the final Betancourt Amber fantasy...

OK.. Finished it Sat. eve...

...And it was even better than my initial impressions seemed. This is the sort of book you almost need two copies of- one to keep and one to loan out. (because I guarantee that eventually you will loan this out to someone who won't smeggin' return it!)

Those of you who have read the series- you're in for a wild, wild ride.. those of you who haven't met Anita Blake officially yet- go, get started- catch up!

Not wanting to give too much away: the official investigation in this book takes a back-burner to sorting out old (and new) relationship complexities... (did I say *new*? damn right!) This book will eventualy feature prominently on the Wench board's *most erotic* book thread.... I promise...

'Nuff said! (at least until I get my prize give-away copies and write up the official review...)

OK, I fifnished it! And, wow! It resolves alot of "old issues" but introduces a whole new set of rules. Hmmm, when's the next one?

Hmmm, when's the next one?

Well- Seeing as we have Hamilton's next scheduled release (the next Merry Gentry) for early '05 (Jan. or Feb.) I suspect we might not even get an Anita Blake in '05 (Too soon to tell, but quite often releasing two books this close together means a delay further down the editing/publishing schedule...
If & when I see another Anita story in the promotions catalog -or when my pub. rep. breaks the news to me- I'll pass it along...

Blue Pixie,

If it's not at Columbia Mall, drive up to Lycoming Mall. Bit bigger & better chance of having it in stock. If not, ask your friendly bookstore to order a copy in for you. The BU bookstore might do it too. Never asked them...

yeah, only at the first two hundred pages and i love nathianel more and more with every page! Even my respect for Micah has gone up, since i wasn't a big fan of his. But he's been really decent thus far.

just finished it two nights ago and i am already begging for more! yeah, the sex is great, but it's really so much more than that! her plot lines are well thought out, and if it seems like she is constantly having to prove to the guys that she is more than "just a girl", well, that's like in life as well.....

gonna have to get the rest of my books out of storage so i can read through them all again before her next one comes out! :)

I'm hoping maybe edward will be in this book somewhere. I got kind of excited when Marianne mentioned the apperance of someone she looks up to as a mentor. Can't wait to read more tongiht.

Amazon finally got it to me yesterday and I finished it last night. <deeply sleepy today> But :lovelett: WOW!!

I adore the way LH moves Anita into new situations and powers and lets the reader learn with her what is going to happen......and boy does it happen!!

BTW - Somehow, I expect Edward to be back. I agree - very cool character.

I still think most of her latest Anita stories have turned into f**k books. I have a hard time finding any kind of plot here, hate the direction she's gone (from "good girl" to "slut") with "metaphysical" reasons for such a change. I'm getting to the point that I may start waiting for the paperback. I'm barely past the middle of ID - and still waiting for her to put her clothes on and do something.

Nathaniel, now - wow...
