View Full Version : Blech - why do people have to come to work & share germs

Some folks at work came in when they were sickly (unintentionally, I am sure) and shared their germs. If you're feeling sick, why don't folks stay home? We have quite the generous sick leave policy at work. Last night I had a scratchy, sore throat and woke up feeling like my tonsils wanted to meet in the middle and shake whatever tonsils have for hands. Now I feel like a stupid bus ran me over and have a fever that goes up and comes down then goes up and comes down.... I'm going to go crawl under the covers and bake this ick out of myself. I am definitely not a happy person when illin'...

Tomorrow - much ginger tea to burn the little nasty germs up!

'night all....:

I feel for you dear....

I work for a chiropractor and people come in in pain and are sick and cough and hack all over me and ewe!

The best thing I can suggest is to get a bottle of Agrisept. It is made from the oils from citrus fruits. You put 15-20 drops in a shotglass of warm water and just down it. Honestly...it's the worst taste in the world, but taking it a few times a day really knocks a cold right out of you!

Thank you Ilanah - I'll look for that at our local health foodie place. Astringent tastes aren't too bad to my palate, so hopefully it won't taste too terrible!

We almost had a lynching at work a few weeks ago...most people do tend to come in to work if they're at all capable of standing upright, but this bozo very obviously hadn't taken any meds...he wouldn't stay put in one area, was touching everything, leaving used tissues around (EEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!), using all the phones and keyboards. Finally the other associates got the asst mgr on the phone and she ordered him to go home...then eveyrone raided the first aid kit for alcohol wipes and started disinfecting everything in sight!

And this guy thought he was unpopular before...

in my Rogues defense...even if you are off one day sick you have to bring a note in or not get paid....now how many dr.s can get you in on a same day notice during cold and flu season?! recently I had a coworker ask how many sick days are we allowed and basically we were told we weren't allowed to get sick and that if we used any days we would be counselled about it....you just cant win in some jobs

I had a workplace try to change our sick leave policy like that-- if we were sick for 3 days, we had to have a note from the doctor. I asked if they would accept a note from my mommy, and pointed out that we were all adults who were not in the habit of abusing our sick time (most of us had weeks of accrued paid-time-off).

When the 12 techs who did the work that paid the company's bills all got mutinous, upper management had to back down.

That's similar to how it was at my last job. In the department I worked in, it didn't matter how much sick leave you had accumulated, if you had more than three incidents in a one year period, you were disciplined. I had almost two months sick leave accumulated when they trumped up my forced retirement, using scheduled Dr.s visits that they had preapproved as leverage (illegally, I might add, since in the past the so called Union had fought such actions successfully).

However, for the flip side, on my present job, where we don't get sick leave, my supervisor has been forced to institute a rule saying people calling in sick must contact her personally, no matter what time of day, and people doing so frequently will be required to provide a doctor's excuse before being allowed to return. She has had to do so because of several people during the past year calling in frequently. We run a minimal crew that doesn't allow for frequent absences so she was forced to deal with it. Unfortunately, the rest of us must suffer for it.

The best way to avoid picking up anything from a sick co-worker (or anyone else you encounter) is to frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with plenty of soap and hot water. Keep your hands away from your nose and face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. If a coworker comes in ill and there is no compelling reason for s/he to use your telephone or computer, etc., politely but FIRMLY tell them not to.

how are you feeling Abs? I had to climb back onto the Ginger Tea wagon this weekend. Apparently my lungs didn't like being outside on New Year's Eve, despite being next to a firepit. ~L~ I'm hoping I kicked some germy butt with the overload.

Getting better, thank you for asking! :smooch: Went to the doc yesterday - strep test came back negative, but she said I had two ear infections and a sinus infection. Blech. So she gave me a 'booster' antibiotic shot in the hip (ow) and an Rx for some antibiotics and a decongestant/expectorant. Last night I took some of my migraine meds to help combat the killer sinus headache, zonked out and slept 'til 1/4 to 11 this a.m. I woke up feeling vaguely human, which is a positive change from the past week!

Hope your lungs get to feeling better soon, too, Lady Sarah - it definitely isn't any fun to ring in the new year all wheezy.
