First British TV exorcism planned
04/01/2005

A new programme plans to show an exorcism for the first time on British television, the Daily Mirror reports.

But religious leaders have slammed the idea and said Channel 4's show, Exorcism, could be "very dangerous".

The programme is being pitched as a serious scientific experiment as industry regulator Ofcom prohibits "actual demonstrations of exorcisms and occult practices" on TV.

A Channel 4 insider told the newspaper: "The aim is to stage an exorcism for television to test the science involved.

"It would involve the church and leading scientists and we'd monitor precisely what happens."

Sky is also planning its own show, When Exorcisms Go Wrong, using home video footage.

But Church of England bishop, Dominic Walker, warned against such programmes.

"People who need this sort of help are nearly always psychologically vulnerable people," he said.

"Such an experiment could be very dangerous."

A BBC spoof on ghosts screened 13 years ago was blamed for the suicide of a Nottingham teenager.

"This sounds very dangerous and will cause considerable unease," said John Beyer of the watchdog Mediawatch.

"People in broadcasting never learn anything - they don't consider how it will affect the audience. This is not only ill-advised, it could be harmful."

However, a spokesman for Sky defended the idea, saying: "It is intended to be a thought-provoking exploration of a controversial subject."

A live seance on Channel 4 last year caused 700 complaints.

gawds I love channel 4...they do the craziest shit in the UK...
They had a live autopsy on the air the other night over there as well...
Frankly, I think all of this is an educational experience and if you don't like it, you have control of the remote. If you don't have a remote, you have control of your finger to press the channel change button or *gasp* the power button.
I would've liked to've seen the live seance.

yup that's the point - just because its broadcast, doesn't mean you must watch it. I applaud them getting the church involved, AS WELL AS scientists.

Never mind my personal thoughts on C of E

Well, I mean there is a show on tv now that tries to scientifically deal with ghosts. It isn't all THAT much different. Although it doesn't deal with the religious aspects. The problem is that exorcism isn't exactly scientific. Whether you believe in them or not, how does one measure a daemon or an evil spirit?

Ah, you mean that show TAPS, Kristi? I love that show...the website has some interesting EVP. I've always been fascinated by ghosts & such. On that show, they have twins who are Demonologists. I never knew u could make a living that way? What makes one a demonologist? Where do u even study that? And exorcism is supposeldy handled by the upper eschelons in the vatican...only a select few are ever trained in it, if I'm not mistaken...prolly why ppl are in an uproar, esp. Vatican.
So many "reality" shows are being televised today, I'm afraid to even use a public bathroom for fear there's a show on that & I'm on camera!

Vel, if you ever watched TV you would know. Sally Struthers does a commercial for a correspondence course. You can learn to be an accountant, business manager, tv/vcr repair, or a demonologist. And at the end of your course you get to keep all your supplies.

I once spoke to a priest I knew in college about this. He said the Vatican has an extensove demonology library and tomes on how to deal with them. He claims the Vatican will train a very small number of exorcists and occult specialists, but their careers are all too short because of the job.

I think if you have enough time and the right research you can walk into places like the NY Public Library and Library of Congress and get a good base of knowledge...then it's probably luck and such as one would need to find a teacher or parapsychologist. I hear the Jesuits are skilled in the occult, but I may be wrong.

:?

scuse me, I have a question.... WHO would WANT to watch an exorsism? Seriously, are they supposed to be horrible and full of pain and suffering for all those involved? WHY would you want to see this? WHY would any television station think that this is something that needs to be aired? I mean, they have the right to do it, I guess, but I'm having a hard time figuring out why they would WANT to. Maybe its just me... I dont like scary movies either, but to watch another person honestly (this is REALITY TV) be hurt and contorted into painful/torturous positions.... this is entertainment? I missed something...

Some people are curious to what an exorcisim would really look like. But if you're an 'old fogie' like me you'll remember that in the 1980's they had "Faces of Death" where you could rent videos of people dying bad, and horrendous deaths. We're a peculiar collection of DNA...sometimes we want to watch stuff we were never meant to see. Or shouldn't.

A LIVE autopsy? That must have been something to see, what with the subject trying to climb off the table and everything.

I can watch gore movies. Anything that has to do with evil , the devil , demons count me out. They scare the bejesus out off me.
Hmmm I wonder though will her head turn all the way around like in that movie the exorcist. ( That is the only part I saw and wanted to see in that movie)
I can not even sit and listen to the hellraiser movies they scare me to death.
