View Full Version : Auctions?
Okay, I have a question / idea / thought in process and was wondering what my fellow wenches thought.
Just recently in the crafter's corner forum, I had mentioned that I thought it would be great to have a gaggle of wenches who knit or crocheted form some sort of stitch-n-bitch to make donations to needy causes. That notwithstanding, it got me to thinking (oh-oh). How come NYRF doesn't have a pirates auction (like the one down in MDRF)? Or do they? Granted, I used to spend alot of time haunting the grove, but I've never heard of a pirates auction at NYRF. So, this got me to thinking some more... what about making/gathering/donating stuff that could be auctioned off every year through our own pirate's auction. The proceeds could be given either towards supporting the faire (i.e. repairs to specific structures/areas) or donated to specified charities.
For my contribution, I could make some great shawls that could be auctioned off, or even some really cool bags. (for those of you who have hung out with me... you know what my shawls look like)
Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

The MDRF is run by the local wenches and they do a lovely job! The Crimson Pirates played this year and we had a blast. And what could be more fun than saving the boobies!? They had an amazing assortment of items donated by the crafters and raised a boatload of money for breast cancer research.
We'd love to have our own Piratical feast if someone is brave enough to put it all together.
I don't know the first thing about organizing something like this, but if there is someone out there... I'm willing to help out any way I can, including donating some things to be auctioned. Anyone up for the challenge?
I could help....if you want.
I could give Chris a call and see if it is at all possible as the first step.
Also, the new thing at NYRF is the Galleypass which goes to charity and offers discounts at local vendors. I am wondering if it would be seen as a conflict to the vendors who are already "giving" to charity.
Anyone chime in here? Galleywench, aren't you the Galleypass coordinator?

Sounds like a great idea!
I'd love to help out, I'm sure I could find a little time here and there to contribute in some way, so keep me in mind.
I could make pinkeepers, or pirate sashes or the like, if you think that might be something people might like to "win" as a prize.

Thanks for remembering the Galley passes!
As far as a conflict the donations seem to be coming from individuals and not vendors, although depending on the item that is being donated by the very crafty wench it may step on the toes of a vendor trying to make ends meet...then again if it is for a charity you may get very little resistance.
As far as coordinating something like a Pirate feast or auction to benefit a charity I'm all all over that...lol especially if the charity is The Queens Galley! I'd be happy to chime in and get my hands mucky to pull it off, our charity has a significant fundraising goal this year as food insecurity in America has become more visable in families who own homes, cars and have become over extended or underemployed. Our programs have been booked months in advance in homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, halfway homes and in section 8 housing areas, calls now come in from more rural areas from people not knowing how to stretch thier food dollar from one meal to the next.
I'm on a tangent...forgive me....someone slap me upside the head...oh, *thanks* Jay! lol
Since I have a good rapport with over 100 vendors involved with the galley pass I can run the idea of the pirate auctionor feast by them. Knowing that some of the items will be donated from an outside source makes putting this together a little easier.
Muffin what did Chris have to say? (he mau be interested in doing something for the paddock?)

Well if you all do decide to take items made by folks I'd love to donate some glass beaded jewelry as it's one of my hobbies. I'm not a member of the wenches guild but I'd certainly like to help out.

Days Past would be thrilled to help put something together as well! We work well with others, so I am not picky about who we are helping as long as we are, and are having fun doing it.
I have some contacts, so I can check them out. Its not far from NYRF either.

Wow, when I first mentioned this, I didn't expect so many wonderful people to respond! I'm thrilled! Okay, I'm going to start working on some really lacey shawls to auction off. I may only get one or two done (they take time), but I'll have them ready! As for someone who can organize all of this... keep me in mind to help out in some fashion. I definitely want to keep a hand in this and be a part of something greater than myself (and help out NYRF/charities at the same time). The Crimson Pirates already know of me (he guys, I'm the female drummer from last year!), but I'd love to get to know the rest of you. Maybe we can all meetup the first day of Faire for a toast!

Hey Rhi & GalleyWench,
We could work together if you are interested. I started up Days Past: Rennies for Good Causes to do just these types of things. I think it would be a very cool thing to do.
PM me!
