PBS' 'Great Performances' is broadcasting the recent Broadway production of Cyrano De Bergerac, starring Kevin Kline, Jennifer Garner and Daniel Sujanta.

It's on right now in NYC, but I'm sure that there will be additional broadcasts here and elsewhere. Check your local listings for time and channel. :-D

I've watched about an hour of it and it's great so far. Kevin Kline is amazing, the supporting cast is wonderful, Daniel Sujanta is okay, and Jennifer Garner... well... bless her heart, I'm sure she's doing her best. ::tinfoil:

Also, I want to break into the theater and steal all their costumes. :-D

Watch it. Do it. DO IT! DO IT NOW!!!

I caught it from the siege at Arras. And you're being kind. I hope she was directed that way, cos otherwise? She was terrible.

I'm gonna go pop in the 1991 version just to clean my brain.

it was decent.
You have to give Garner credit, it's live theater and that must have been grueling.

A show of that stature, with those co-stars, you don't bring your b-game. Of course it's hard. But if you can't do it well, please G-d, don't do it.

Perhaps it was meant to be done in a period style. Though Kevin Kline didn't seem to have as much trouble. She just seemed...hollow. All gesture and loudness, but nothing actually inside.

I call what she did "surface acting" it's just playing the part, not becoming it. But she didn't even seem to connect with the character, she was hard ot watch.

Well duh! He's Kevin Freaking Kline! :-D

Seriously, I think that he's tremendously underrated as an actor. He became a bit of a movie star, and everyone forgot that (unlike many stars) he can actually act too.

I saw it! I thought it was wonderful! (but you're right - my sister thought the female lead was a twit, I thought "I could do better than that in high-school" - but sometimes I'm a snooty bitch - oops! sorry) and my dinner got cold watching the costumes - scrumptious! (the costumes - not my cold dinner)
P.S. They only did three ways to get to the moon - I've heard 6 or 7? There was a William Shatner 33LP record I heard once and instantly wanted to memorize it! (well O.K. I wrote it down - from the record - in LONG hand)

It seemed to me that the script for this production was a fairly well-abridged version of the original text.

Well...the Anthony Burgess translation of the original text, I think.

(Yeah, I had to go look it up.)
