Mooncakes

This is a simple recipe to make and can be adapted to any season by
changing a few ingredients.

2 cups sifted flour (not self rising)
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup of milk
1 slightly beaten egg

Combine dry ingredients, then cut in shortening until crumbly.
Stir in milk & egg.
Round dough onto a lightly floured surface, knead lightly.
Roll or pat out until dough is evenly spread about 1/4 inch thick.
Cut into small crescents and/or full moons.
With a sharp knife carve runes or symbols of your hopes for the
next month into the tops.
Bake at 450 F for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown

For seasonal adaptation:

Winter - sprinkle icing sugar.
Spring - add a candied violet or orange rind to the mix.
Summer - add minced parsley for color.
Autumn - add a tsp each of sage, basil, oregano, and thyme.
