Beaver fur makes the best felt for a fedora (sorry, Indiana Jones tendencies coming to the surface again...) From what I hear, though, you don't want to get a beaver fur fed wet, or you're going to discover the joys of the beaver's cloaca... :yuck:

He's practically been living in Mongolia for the last 4 years so, I'm sorta used to that.
Now going to Kuwait, he's done that before. In fact, he was there up until the day "we" went into Iraq. That makes me nervous but, not so much as the next leg of the journey.

Now, his going into Iraq, as a civilian contractor for the D.O.D. has me a little nervous :?

We've all seen the news and that just , putting it bluntly, scares the bejesus out of me.
A dear sweet friend of ours was there for 15 months and when she came back, (yes, a female who did as much shooting as the men in a so-called non-combat area), she let us know the REAL deal over there.

I sometimes wonder if everyone who's actually serving in the military agrees with what's going on. After all, joining the military is often one of the only chances many people can get at a decent job/career. A very close friend of mine is probably going into the Army as a clarinetist in one of their bands (I have to say, the military has some kickass bands, and no, they don't just play Sousa and "Hail to the Chief"), essentially for the purpose of getting his student loans paid off. Frankly, it'd be a smart route for me (and it's a pretty cush military job--you don't get sent into combat), but I just don't think I could handle being in the military (for one thing, unless you're in the Marine band (I think that's the one...or maybe it's the Air Force), you still have to go through boot.) I don't think I'd be very good at following orders!

Now I cant say anything about the Army/air force., but with the marines, they are a rifleman first then whatever a musican is called. tey could in all honestly get pulled into a combat role.
Now with the navy musicians,I have no respect for them. they get payed to do in my eyes nothing to really contribute to the navy's mission. Dont say well they play for retirements and other ceremonies. well, that music could be recorded and played for less. If it's a navy band you want then OK, let all people try out, if you get accepted then thats your assignment for a few years then back to fleet ya go.

Now while not respectingthem has sailors, I do respect them has musicians. I can give credit where its due.

I kind of look at it this way. I work for a pretty big not for profit company. Do I always agree with the decisions and policies they make. Nope. Do I do my job for them anyway. You betcha.

Now granted, there is a huge difference between my job and that of the military. They are asked to make sacrifices and do things in the name of their job that I can't even begin to imagine.

One of my friends who is an ex-Marine said that he did not always believe in what the military was involved in, but he believed in something bigger than that. That he was doing his part to defend his country.

And on that note: HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!!

Haven't really heard anything from the Navy bands....if I WERE to sign up, my choice would be the Air Force band. They seem to get to play the best stuff. Some of their bands have come to Tucson and given FABULOUS concerts (including a great performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, K. 571.) Want to hear something really cool? Several years back, they commissioned a piece called "Dance Movements", by Philip Sparke. We played this back in the fall in the UofA Wind Ensemble, and let me tell you--this is one of the most challenging pieces I've EVER run across, and one of the most fun to play/listen to as well. You can hear clips of the North Texas University University Wind Symphony playing it here (they actually have about 7 wind ensembles total--this is their top group, conducted by Eugene Corporan.) It's hard to track down the Air Force band recording (I burned it from our Wind Ensemble TA)--if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to burn them a copy. The North Texas recording is really good (I have that as well), but I think the AF band's is a bit more musical (N. Texas is known for it's intense precision, but it's still a great recording--very impressive.)

I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to play this piece.
Sorry, this is a really big threadjack--but I guess it is the threadjack thread...
And BTW--I think it is the Air Force in which you don't have to go thru boot.

Oh, yeah. Especially, for this time of year, if you chill the water balloons until they are more like slush balloons and shoot them at each other.
Great fun at a cookout and might be fun for willing victims at a Faire.

I hope everyone has a lovely 4th doing whatever it is you choose to do today. Myself, I might go see Mr and Mrs Smith. I mean... a hot woman and a hot man with guns and other weapons?? :swoon: I had a birthday bbq and party on Saturday. The bbq sort of evolved into the party instead of there being a break for relaxation like planned. So I ended up spending all day yesterday recovering.

This weekend was opening weekend of GLMF. I can't wait to hear how it was! I wish I had planned differently so I could have gone down.

Happy 4th! I'm playing with the Tucson Symphony tonight...and I am SO excited because we're playing (among other things).....THE RAIDERS MARCH!!!!! :cheer: :singdanc: :bananada: When I got to rehearsal last night, and found that in the folder, I damn near started jumping up and down. You have to understand...I have waited over half my life to play this (no conductor I've ever played under has wanted to play it.) When we started playing it last night, there were tears in my eyes, and when we hit Marion's Theme, those tears started rolling down my face in full force. I know, I'm a complete movie music/Indiana Jones geek, but this is something I've wanted for as long as I can remember. If I'd known they were playing that, they wouldn't have even had to pay me for this gig (though I still won't turn down the $200! ) Other pieces on the program include "Jurassic Park" (more Williams, I won't argue with that!), the Liberty Bell March (known to most as the Monty Python theme), Colonel Bogey (aka The Bridge Over the River Kwai theme), Ashokan Farewell (from the Ken Burns Civil War series), Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture (standard for the 4th!), more Sousa marches, and some other stuff (a lot of which is cheesy, but you've got to expect that on a 4th of July concert.) It's an outdoor gig, so it's going to be HOT, but at least it starts after sunset. Also means that tuning is going to be a major issue tonight! That's OK--most people who'll be there won't know the difference.

Wish I could wear my fedora! (even if it was just for Raiders...)

Oh buggers, I just found out that there is no shuttle to the local fireworks here. Which means thanks to a bad tire, the kids and I are home for the fourth. :( No dj, or kararoke , (did I spell that right ?), or any of the other activities planned before the fireworks. Walking is not an option. Uphill most of the way, a narrow country road and I still get tired easily. (Not quite back up on my feet). And since I was planning on attending the fireworks, I didn't buy any for the boys to do here.

Maybe I will just go start some water fights with the neighborhood kids. Might be entertaining for awhile. Hmmmmm. I do still owe a soaking to two of the boys for the one they gave me last year. (Nothing like getting your business suit soaked just before going to work)

I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th. We cooked a brisket, spent some time in the afternoon with my SIL and the kidlets, then went to the fireworks out to the ballpark. Since we had to wait for the game to end and we were there well enough before sundown, I took along the first HP book to read to the kids: Kaitlin, who's 12, and Kayleigh, who's 4 going on 40. Josh didn't really care, he wanted to crawl into the back end of the car and play with Papa. Soon enough, however, after I came up on Harry's visit to the Zoo, the SIL was listening with rapt attention (and this is the woman who wouldn't touch the movies with a 10 foot pole when they came out!) and kept asking me when it'd get better for Harry, that she felt the treatment he was getting was horrible and wanted to know when Dudley got his come-uppance. she now wants to borrow my movies and catch up!

Oh Lady Sarah, when I went to faire on Sunday, all I could think of was, "what will go with the wonderful green top & skirt that I aquired from Lady Sarah?"

Then, as I was walking (ok, I was stumbling alittle  ), there, in front of me, I saw a sign, THE sign. PENDRAGON COSTUMES. I completely forgot about my Rogue, my daughter (a WIT) and her 3 friends (2 WITs & 1 RIT). I made a bee-line straight (well sorta  ) for the bodices.

I obtained black (goes better with ALL my garb  ) sides and the Greenman stomacher with Oak leaf epaulets.
THEN, as I was getting ready to relinquish my pounds and pence, I was shown the Dagger stomacher (http://www.pendragoncostumes.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=pendragon&Category_Code=bceltic_dagger). Well, I couldn't have just one design , now could I?!? :D So, of course, I bought that too !!

I also replaced my belt, bought a new mug holder for the new belt and a new dark green deer skin purse that I can either carry on my shoulder OR wrap the strap around the belt and use as a pouch :D.

OK, so maybe I went a little crazy, but hey, (and this is my story and I'm stickin' to it).....

Well, I was working on my Pennsic tent all weekend long. The tent (10 foot wide, 13 foot high round Pavilion) is pitched and half decorated. I'll post pics later. ::looks at calendar and to do list::

>pack EVERYTHING in the tent (2 weeks worth of stuff, including air bed, garb, sundries, blankets, table, chair, etc.)
>re-pitch tent by myself (without hubbies help this time)
>sew chemises and tunics
>get ready for NYRF Opening Day
... all must be done in the next 2-3 weeks

Can't wait for this weekend though. My friends are coming up to visit. My friend and I are going Friday to the Mohonk Mountain House http://www.mohonk.com/ for a massage and facial. Then, the hubby and I are going to babysit their daughter (my hubbies goddaughter) while they go on a river cruise with a salsa dance band on the Hudson for their 5th wedding anniversary. My hubby is going to drop them off, tell them to get blasted drunk (they need to, they are so stressed out) and he'll come pick them up. We're gonna then put them up in a hotel for that evening - and if they are really drunk we may drop them off at a cheezy love motel just for ghits and shiggles. They are going to be here on Saturday also, so I won't be able to work on Pennsic stuff this weekend. ::looks at calendar:: *Sigh* I am the Queen of Procrastination! :king:

Speaking of cats....my poor baby is at the V-E-T today. She's there for her shots and a dental. She has a tooth that looks really bad, and it's probably going to have to be pulled. Boy, is it going to be interesting trying to pill a cat with a sore mouth. :( I know she's in good hands, but I'm going to be sitting here worrying all day until she's home.

And boy, did she get me good when we were attempting to get her into the carrier.

Myfanawy, hope your kitty is well. The tooth pulling thing isn't so bad. Before my Serana passed away a few months ago she had about a dozen teeth pulled. I thought the poor thing was going to be toothless before long but my vet told me it wouldn't matter because her gums would harden and she'd still be able to eat dry food. Weird, right? Just be sure to bribe your kitty with lots of wet food until she's over the "trauma."

Myfanawy
07-05-2005, 06:02 PM
Thanks, Ariel. I just brought her home, and she's still a bit groggy, but otherwise alright. Turns out they had to pull 3 teeth (which shattered when they extracted them.) Actually, the vet mentioned that they'd recently had a cat in there (about 2 1/2 years old) that had to have all but 3 teeth extracted, and was still fine with eating dry food; in fact, the cat refused to eat wet food. I know that won't be the story with my little one--she wolfs it down whenever she gets it!--and she'll definitely be getting more than usual in the next several days.

I feel like such a bad cat-mom for letting her teeth get to the point where she needed 3 pulled. Being a poor college student sucks on a lot of levels, but I feel like I at least should have taken care of her teeth sooner rather than being selfish and buying garb and stuff for myself. Well, she's all up to date on dental work for the moment--I'm going to make damn sure she gets a dental every year now, even if I have to give up something I'd really like. I'd much rather have her around than a new bodice any day.

Regarding the dentals, I don't think that would have made much of a difference for Serana. She just developed really bad teeth later in life to where they would just rot. She also had asthma and was on kitty steroids. She cost me a fortune but I miss her! Towards the end of her long life we were contemplating getting her a kitty inhaler because the steroids weren't helping the asthma so well anymore. Its amazing what they've developed for animals now. The little inhaler straps over their face and they use the same spray stuff people use.
Glad your kitty is doing well, Myfanawy.

It is pretty amazing...all the advances they've made in veterinary medicine. I think Indy's genetically disposed to having bad teeth...runs in the family (there's more filling & crown material than real tooth in my mouth at this point, I think.) I've also been mixing tooth diet food (bigger chunks) into her regular food lately, so hopefully that'll do some good. I agree with the vet bills being worth it--I want her to have as long, happy, and healthy a life as possible (but when the end comes, I'm not going to try and pull any drastic miracles off...when it's time, it's time. I don't want her to suffer just because I'll miss her.) She's got many years left in her! She's 5...I've had her since she was a year old, and those 4 years have been a gift.
Thanks again, Ariel. :)

Apple Cider Vinegar helps too. I used that a lot when I was a vendor at Saturday Market. I would end up with a sunburn on the top of my head least once a year. Easier to pour diluted vinegar over my head than trying to get the other stuff on. You don't need to use it diluted though. The only drawback is, you tend to ,well  , a bit vinegary.

Ok here's my 2 cents:

When I was little, my mom would keep a stick of cocoa butter in the fridge and would take it out and rub it on her & me when we got sunburned.

Solarcaine in either the gel or the spray is also a godsend.

I started using self tanner. There is a new one out that I got I believe it is Jergens. It works pretty well accept for the feet I have to concentrate on them or the ankles will look muddy. I have just come to accept my pale self. If I leave the house I have sunblock on.

Po, Demo? There's a demo this weekend? do tell.

Po cuts & pastes from the Endless Hills Baronial listserver announcement, with some updates...

Hi All!
I just wanted to remind everyone that the Scranton Children's Library Demo is Saturday the 9th from 11 to 1:00 PM. Please arrive at 10:30 to set up and learn your parts. We're expecting quite a crowd. If you can come, please do, and wear your finery! We're expecting a TV station. We'll be in the air conditioned interior of the library, so feel free to wear your court garb.

Some of the things planned:

-Calligraphy & Illumination table
-Medieval Board Games
-The period food game
-Baroness Isabella: Court (ie.Gown & Coronet 1st thing), then a fighting DEMO with Alwin if the weather holds.
-Period Fencing/Dueling Demo with Po (With Morghan, Anton and Morgana Dark..)

More Fighters always welcome! Fighting is Outside.

I could use some more volunteers, so if you're thinking you'd like to help, speak up! We can always use more volunteers. I have a long list of activities that we can do if we have enough volunteers....and NONE of them are painful, difficult or boring! You'll have a great time, I promise. These little kids will think you're the best invention since rocks were new.

Po then resumes nibbling on Lady Buxom....

There is a bowl of hersheys minitures in the secretarys office and I find myself in there more than normal because off the chocolate.

Before I transferred departments, we had a cake every month for the birthdays of that month. White cake with cheesecake mousse filling and chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling. I always licked the filling out and threw away the rest. The icing was just too sweet for me.

My new department celebrates their birthdays at 4 in the afternoon... and now that I leave at 4 pm most days. ;) I've been REALLY good not to eat cake. Besides, they've got shitty taste in cakes over here. it's awful carboard cakes. blech.

Okay, I have to admit to the fact that I am a Garb Whore. Where do I go to sign up for the meetings? I went to Wal-Mart last weekend looking for material to make a skirt to match one of my bodices. I found that as well as some faux suede. Feels wonderful, looks great. Now I'm trying to persuade my Mom to help me make yet another outfit. I went on E-Bay this afternoon & ordered some ankle boots to match my current garb & possibly my new garb. I also ordered some really nice feast gear. I have some already, but I'm going to package it up and put a ticket for TRF King's Feast in the package & give it to my cousin for his Birthday in September. My Brother want's a kilt as well as a new shirt. I have yards of material in my room yet I don't even sew. I can crochet & I can embroidery. Following sewing instructions is a bit of a challange. I need to see something along with the instructions (visual aids are needed), just reading them doesn't help make things click.
I start on vacation in 7 days time. Since I'm not going out of State as once planned, I'm going to find things here in Texas to keep me busy. Mike & I are still seeing each other, so that is one thing. My Aunt wants to go to the Coast, PussyWillow wants to go to Fiesta Texas, I want to go to Frederickburg Texas, and many other things to do. So much to do so little time to do it in.
I hope everyone in Dennis' aim are safe & try to keep dry. We are very dry here in Texas, I think the last time I remember measurable rain was back in April.
Have a wonderful weekend to all!!!

Oh, don't tempt me. I really am begining to dislike the radio in the morning and I like music. LOTS of it. I'm just smart enough NOT to have it on buzzer alarm, or it may be thrown out the window the nano-second that it went off. I can just about tune out the radio, although I do have it rather LOUD in the mornings to get me up and it's rather hard to ignore a rather anoying song. If I ever hear The Reason again... :blech: :yuck: :irked: ......
Why must Radio Stations play the same song over & over & over again until you are so sick of it that you just want to give up on radio or music? I know that there are other songs that these bands made that can be played other than just ONE bloody song. :censored:  :augh:

Good morning all !!
Word of warning, when I'm worried or bored, I cook.
When I'm worried AND bored, I cook and bake.
Guess what, even in this hot & humid weather, I've made enough goodies for a week.

Guess you are all the benafactors (sp?) of my emotions.

Let's see, we'll start with a mimosa (champagne & fresh squeesed OJ), then its on to the cheese and potato blintzes topped with a fresh strawberry or blueberry compote. Next is the bacon, sausage & ham. Omelets, lighter than thistle down. And of course, muffins, scones and danish. Milk, coffee, cappucino & tea are on the sideboard.

DO come back later for the cookies, brownies and other tasty treats for afternoon tea.

Good morning all.
Bux if you cook this much at home can I come live with you.
My brain is screaming I need coffe.

Darlin', I DID make all this !

My husband left yesterday for Kuwait & Mongolia. After I dropped him at the airport, the first thing I heard on the radio was, "Have You Forgotten?" by Daryl Worley.
I don't know about all of you but, I had a bad feeling. :(

When he went to Kuwait & Iraq the last time, the first song on the radio I heard was, "Wish You Were Here" by Mark Wills. Less than 24 hours later, "we" went into Iraq. (my husband works for the company that supplies the RF radios for our troops and he was taking them to Kuwait prior to the invasion).

Then, at 2:37am, I woke up out of a sound sleep, cold sweat running down my spine.
THAT'S the reason for all the cooking and baking.

Be assured, I know in my heart he is and will be okay but, until he gets home, there's that little imp on my shoulder telling me otherwise. :?

I know it's no help, but the first week after my brother arrived in Baghdad, I rolled over at 430 for three mornings straight and heard news reports on the radio telling about bombing at the gates to Camp Victory and so many soldiers were wounded and killed. Luckily (and honestly not so luckily for the families and the servicemen) they were all marines and it was on the other side of the Green Zone from where my brother was.

House Fangorn will be getting that new Potter book in our clutches this weekend, and, we're doing a lil release promo type thing for it down here at the Park City Mall. Mini #1 is taking the part of Harry Potter, mini#2 is Draco, mini #3 is an anonymous Gryffyndor (sp?) student, not sure if mini #4 is gonna do anything, I myself shall be Snape. Phee may also join in the fun, not sure though. All the fun happens Friday night (tonight), from 9pm to 12am, I believe. Don't quote me on the time though. now, to concoct a believable story as to why Professor Snape has a blonde streak in his hair, a mustache and goatee.......:P

oooohhhhh. Dat would be pretty. Yes, I have a thing for Snape. The canon character of Snape has always been one of the more interesting ones and then Alan Rickman when and played Snape in the movies and it was all over. DAMN that man (Rickman) has a voice.

Ya know who I can wait to find out what happens to him. Neville. I just think he's going to become a powerhouse of a wizzard. See, here's the thing; in SS we find out when Harry goes to get his first wand that "The wand chooses the wizzard, the wizard does not choose the wand." <sidebar: not sure if that is a canon quote, but it is stressed in the movie>. Then, in OOTP we find out that Neville has been using his father's wand - which was broken in the last fight at the MOM. I did that with OorP.. We were walking through Target, my neice and I, the morning after the release. She was pushing the cart, I was flipping through the pages. I wanted to find out who died. I cried in the middle of the aisle while my neice looked around as if to say "I am *not* related to her." Funny thing is, she did the same thing when she got to that point in the story. I just gloated knowingly.

Oooh... Good point. Maybe that's also why he hasn't been all that great with magic so far-the same thing happened to Ron, who had been using his brother's wand until the start of PoA (I think. My cousin still has my copy of that and GoF. They're packed in a box, and I won't see them until they buy a house and move in. *grumble*).

Okay, the fates must be pleased with me today. I woke up early this morning despite being able to sleep 30 minutes longer, since my alarm had not gone off yet. I got ready for work, and was able to park reasonably close to the building. Today felt like a GOOD day. During my first break I went downstairs to get $ out of "Aunty Em", & a person was selling stuff for the Leukemia Society. I decided to purchase $5 of raffle tickets for a car care gift basket & some other stuff. I ended up "donating" $10.00 to the Society. I went back upstairs got back on the phones (mind you I have a rather nasty case of Laryngitis again). About 30 minutes later a co-worker came up to me & told me that I won the gift basket. COOL 8) . She delivered it to me & everyone was asking me to wash their vehicles. I said that I had everything that I needed to have my COUSIN wash my car & then some. I took my last break @ 4ish. Around 5 my manager came up & said that I could leave 3 minutes early today since I was going on vacation. I said, cool. I can log off the phone @ 5:27p instead of 5:30p. She asked what time I was to leave for the day & I told her 5:30p. She said that she would let me log off 30 minutes early instead & I can start my vacation early today. The best thing is I still get paid for the 30 minutes that I was able to leave early. So I high tailed it over to B&N & got my wrist band & now I'm just waiting for 12:01a, might even go see a movie while I'm waiting. I really LOVE vacation about now.

Well, apparently we had a successful release for HP last night. mini #1 (Harry), and mini #2 (Draco) had an entourage of little teeny boppers following them around ooh-ing and ahhh-ing over them. Even I had a few comments, one of which goes as follows "Holy crap it's Snape! What's he doing here?" and of course two that went something like this " Oh....my...god......you soooo look like Johnny Depp!" and "yo! it's johnny depp! (kid's friend) "no it isn't, he just looks like depp, moron." Dull at times it was, but had alot of fun too. The boys had a blast, and so did the crowd that was there. So, it all turned out ok.

To briefly refresh the memory- last Feb. when I was trying to earn my Marshal’s Warrant, I first encountered the Kingdom’s Marshal of Fencing.. and *gomez’d* her arm after she killed me on the listfield- whereupon she called for her Lord and Husband (another well-known for his prowess fencer), who promptly also killed me in a particularly flamboyant death scene. (and less than a week later- she contacted me and issued me that Marshal’s Warrant!)

Well, this same Kingdom Marshal of Fence was presiding over my first tourney-bout this weekend... against the Baronial Champion from the Barony of Blackstone Mountain (West Virginia).. a young lady. <grin>

After the introductions and the Honors- when Blackstone’s champion stepped towards me to shake my hand- I lifted her wrist to my helm as if to kiss it... and softly, under her breath- so the spectators would not hear it- the presiding Marshal murmured:
.....”Just FENCE, Po... JUST fence.....”
