I really can't come up with words for this...

The school board president of the Snugg’s Cove, California Consolidated School District announced yesterday that the board has voted unanimously to abolish graduation.
“An Ohio student recently went on a shooting rampage because of the pressure associated with graduation,” Board President Anna Kossett told a reporter for the Snugg’s Cove Setting Sun. “It would be the height of irresponsibility for us to allow that sort of thing to occur here in Snugg’s Cove.”
Ms. Kossett explained that in the process of talking with students during the school’s daily anxiety abatement class, teachers had discovered that students fear graduation once they begin to understand that they will face more difficult competitive situations than those they are accustomed to. “They realize they will either have to get jobs or go to colleges that may not provide as nurturing an environment as that in Snugg’s Cove,” the former school psychologist-turned-administrator said.

After getting over my shock, I reread the article. It was something similar to that that made my husband and I pull our children out of a sports program they were in. It always seemed to me that by doing this that they (what ever group or organization) were rewarding mediocre (sp) behavior and performance. Goes against everything I was taught. In a perfect world everyone would be the same, but the world isn't perfect and one shouldn't expect to be treated the same if you don't do the same. What is next? No managers in businesses because it makes the employees feel inferior? I am still trying to wrap my brain around some of the thinking going around today.

Stamina,
This is not journalistic reporting. There is no record of a Snugg's Cove Consolidated School District in California, nor a city/township called "Snugg's Cove."
Further, if this was truly an accredited "school district," it would HAVE to meet certain criteria of the state in order for students to graduate with a high school diploma.
No, this is not politically motivated (on my part) to post this, because I'll give you evidence of so-called "news sites" that all sides of the political spectrum use to skew the facts. They all disgust me. These "news outlets" on all sides are not examples of journalistic integrity.
This is NOT news. At best, it's satire.

Well thank the gods it's satire. They way the government is running the schools, this won't be satire in a few years.

"nest shaped classrooms", "color coded grading schemes"?
Did anyone bother to really read this? They should be able to see immediately that his is either a hoax or a work of satire, not a genuine story. Wonder how long before this turns up on Snopes.com.

Really.
I mean, as soon as I got to the part about 'anxiety abatement class', I *knew* this couldn't be legit.
Can people at least check their sources to make sure items are *legitimate* news before posting?
Honestly......
OK
Before everyone gets too upset for sources not being checked..
I am a teacher in a large public school district, and what they are saying really isn't far from the truth.
1. many of us go through yearly training on how to make the classroom more comfortable and friendly to the students. This includes words like nest and homey. The theory is that the more comfortable the student is the more likely they will feel safe in the school environment and learn better.
2. Color coded grading - actually exists. many still resist, but if you remember there was a huge discussion on th eboard about grading in red.
3. Anxiety abadement class/week- also exists-just not by that name. We meet with our students at least twice a week to talk about their concerns and help them. They honestly feel upset when we say, "thi sis something you have to learn to deal with" or " life is not fair, what are you going to do". We also poll the students each year to see how they think we can improve the school or ho wthey think we can provide a better learning environment - you would be suprised on what they say and more suprised on what they want us to comply with.
So while this article was a wash, it really was based in fact. maybe it was trying to show us ho wfar we could go?

"color coded grading schemes"?
There's a pet peeve of mine: color coding. Color coding discriminates against color blind people, which is approximately 5.5% of the population (10% of males, 1% of women).

Well, the source, frontpagemag.com, is a legitimate one. A very conservative source, but legit none-the-less. From looking through articles and researching the author of this particular piece on Google one learns that she is a satirist. Most of the articles in her archive on frontpagemag.com are marked as such.
As for posting only "legitimate" news, folks have been posting satire on and off for years on these boards and others. I think it's fun watching people over react only to realize later that it was simply a piece written for humor and usually social commentary.
Speaking of satire taken too seriously, does anyone remember when the article about ren faires was run by The Onion and showed up in numerous places out of that context. There were people truly up in arms because of the recreation use of drawing and quartering!
Oh, I have to see that article!
