With opening weekend being so close now, some of us were talking over the weekend to see if anyone has stepped foward to lead the Wench Walks. So, anyone stepped up yet? If not, I would hate to see everyone suffer because there wasn't anyone to lead us. So, I'd gladly step up. I know I'd need to be a Merc, but that's definately doable since I was going to join this year anyhoodles... :-)

Madam Miatawolf isn't leading us this year? She has a lovely voice. But I don't mind who leads and long as I get to sing a verse or two! :)

I'm really not sure. The talk was that there was nobody to lead us. Carlene does a faboo job, and I hope she still will lead us. But if not, I want to make sure that there will still be walks, and that they will still be fun.

I heard Carlene is going to be working full time at Foundry and therefore won't have time to lead the walks.

You don't need to be a Merc to lead walks... you just need a Merc presence to guard the walk. To lead a walk you need to be a trained walk sergeant and get the ok from the local madam. Also, as a rule, we don't walk opening weekend. There’s always so much stuff going on and those in charge need to get a feel for what's changed and where shows are.

I know that Alianne is a walk sergeant but I don't know how often she'll be up. I also don't know if she'd want to be responsible for a season full of walks.

As always, I could be mistaken. It's happened before. :star:

I'm trying to get a hold of Lars to obtain Merc-dom before faire, but he's a busy man. So, the first thing i'm doing when the gates open is running to the booth. I'd be glad to guard the walks.
See you in a few weeks!

I wouldn't be there opening weekend and I'm sure Alianne would be glad to teach me in the ways of the walk, especially if she were up here for second weekend... (hint hint if you're reading this!). I have a good idea as to how to lead, but there are things that I don't know, I've been on enough of them, but never lead. Never even come close. Anyways, it doesn't have to be me, I just don't want there to be a season without walks. So many newcomers this year, ya know? I don't want anyone to miss out on the fun.

I'm sure she'd show you the ropes and personally, I think you'd be great leading the walks. It's all about personality and being outgoing and well, yeah, that's you! :star:

i'm way too reserved to even consider leading walks. Wondering who's the madame in charge this year, since Ronnie is out west...

Historically there are no wench walks or rogueings the first weekend. We are all getting used to the ebb and flow of shows and acts. As well as catching up with old friends we haven't seen in a year...

I cannot speak for the wenches, but I know the will not be rogueings first weekend...

I agree, we spend most of our time catching up and whatnot and with all the changes (and from what I've seen they're all great changes) we'd need at least one weekend to get used to it.

And thanks Drea! You might be quiet, but you're sooo not reserved!

Unfortunately I usually miss out on walking AND watching....we're located so far back on Mystic way (and in the past the ladies of the Psychic areas have complained about the noise)...and the walk never makes it back to us. Sometimes I am lucky and the wind blows just the right way and we get a whisper of what I am sure is a wonderful song!

*maybe* i'll get to sneak out for one (or catch a portion of one) this season!

WenchLadyKate -
I'd be happy to join you in learning the fine arts of Walk Sergeant! If Alianne consents to give some lessons, that would be wonderful! (Hopefully on a Sunday....)
AND, I'm already a Merc, though IMHO, it's always a good thing to have a manly presence in that aspect of things. Not that I'm sexist, or anything, but having a man nearby during walks makes me feel a bit more secure, what with all the loose maledanes watching, and most likely getting the wrong idea, if ya get my drift....
I will be at Faire every weekend this year, though mostly on Sundays. We should definitely NOT be without wench walks at NYRF! In fact this is the first I had heard that we were leaderless.
We will all miss MiataWolf's skills and her great voice, I'm sure!

Frankly, how can you say you are independant women and then say you need a man to "guard you"... Wenches should be able to take care of themselves and not NEED a man to protect them. Mercs should guard wench walks, but they should be Battle Bytches, not male mercs...

And if insufficient amounts of Battle Bytches are present, what then? I see no reason why the guys can't be asked to lend a hand in the event that only one or two BB's are there.

We are very lucky that FairieTink has just moved out here to AZ--from what I hear, she's quite the Battle Bitch! We were wondering who on earth we'd have for security, and this works out perfectly (if she's still willing to accept the job!)

And, I have no problems with male security for walks, either. You enlist who you've got. Both are ideal.

That's it exactly. You make do with what you have and if you feel more comfortable with the presence of a guy, big deal? Being confident and independant doesn't mean stupid and ignorant of safety issues. There are times when there simply are not enough BBs on hand. You make do with what you have.

Alinore, if you feel more secure and comfortable with a male presence, then ask for one. I would, and *I*m a BB!

What is a Battle Bytch?

Ariel
07-18-2005, 10:43 PM
Tap,
A Battle Bytch is a female member of the mercenaries guild.

And on the subject of wench walks in general, I don't think I'd notice if we stopped having walks at Tux! I'm not advocating that we stop having them by any means. Its just I haven't been on one in years and honestly I can't say I miss them. Does that make me a bad wench???

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, thank you Ariel. At different times in my life I think I might have been qualified as a Battle Bytch. But never joined the "union".

I know my 1st ex was sure I was a witch, and that was before I chose the Path.

I have been going to Tux for 9 years now, and oddly enough I have never seen a wench walk there. Most years we go for one or two full weekends. (Its hard to get people to co-ordinate time off and I generally work saturdays - and we are north of boston) I used to time trips home from Georgia so I could go to faire. I have participated in wench walks at small faires near here. Although I am not the best singer, I do enjoy them. I wish I had more time to get involved with Faire things, but I have far too many hobbies. :)

A little late but I wanted to add my 2 cents.

Being an independent woman means you know how you'd like things. And knowing that it's okay to ask for help. Not eveyone can do everything all the time.

I'm sure with so many women present, be they Battle Bytches or Wenches, I'm sure there would be no problem. But on that rare occasion when some douche doesn't "get it", I know I'd like to have at least one guy there to step up and say, "yea? What are you gonna do?"

Of course not... Hell, I'd rather have Rogues guard the walks so that we can make sure that we know where and when it's coming...

Easier to avoid that way...

THANK you, Ladies, for your ability to notice the difference between "needing a man" (which I most definitely did not say), versus "feeling more secure with one around under certain circumstances".

I am all of about 115 lbs soakin' wet, and though I've never had any trouble taking care of myself, having had 3 brothers with whom I played football, baseball, climbed trees, wrestled, lifted weights, etc., etc., I am not about to deal with a 300 lb. 6' tall drunken and grabbing maledane in any physical sense. At least, not without getting hurt myself. And yes, I know this from experience. Though it doesn't really hurt at the time you're getting thrashed, squeezed or grabbed, it sure as hell does later! And I'm gettin' too old for that sh*t.
Of course, I've generally been able to talk my way out of many a sticky situation, though.

Whenever I've been on walks, I always note the nearest friendly Rogue, just in case. I am sure that they are also watching out for us as well, without our having to ask.
At least, some of them are....
Just let something untoward occur on a walk, and see how many Rogues come running in to stop it.
And isn't that what being a part of a group is all about? Watching each others backs?
So whether it is a Rogue OR a Wench OR a Battle Bytch taking my back - well, at least I know SOMEone's got it, as I do theirs.

Really I will remember that... I have gotten a few Rogues in my time. But mostly cause they wanted to be caught.

FWIW, I will be at Tux opening weekend.

Although I know traditionally we don't walk opening weekend, since I'm 'just playing' this season at Tux (since I no longer live close enough to be there every weekend so working's out), if Carlene or Bethany give the okay, I have no problem Sergeanting that weekend if there are enough Wenches who want to Walk.

I would prefer to have 'security' of a couple Battle Bytches or Mercs along -- as it's been said, it's not so much that we can't 'take care of ourselves', but since when we're Walking, it's easier to have someone or two bring up the rear (so the Walk doesn't spread out too much) and to run interference if we do have the rare drunken patron get out of hand. Since we're concentrating on the Walk and its routine, it's better to have someone who is not having to worry about singing, keeping the Walk flowing, keeping track of the order of singers (or 'rhythymic reciters <g>), etc....

*quietly says Hi and $.02*
I'll be at TUX for my first visit ever opening weekend. (I'm a PARF wench). If a walk does happen on Sunday, I'll be there. Either way, I am very excited to be visiting.
If a walk does get planned, can someone please post where and when it will start?
Thank you!

Ariel

Sterling, there won't be a walk opening weekend regardless of who is there. We just don't do walks the first weekend so we can find out what's going on, if anything has changed and let everyone get settled. Maybe you'll have to make more than one trip to NYRF this year so you can participate with the other ladies who will be walking. Oh and I hope you have fun on your first ever trip to our faire! :D Make sure you introduce yourself when you see someone with a pin.

Miatawolf

Thanks Ariel. I thank all who said that they would step in but the logistics and experience has told us that is a bad idea to walk that first weekend.

As stated in a different thread NO WALK at NYRF on opening weekend.
We need to learn schedules of shows and such.

We will pretty much only have 1 walk per weekend. The are exceptions ofcourse.
What I would like to know is what day is perferable to you gals?

WenchLadyKate
07-20-2005, 10:13 AM
How about saturdays, around mid day.

The energy seems to be up more on Saturdays and mid day would be good since everyone would have had a chance to say hello to all the people that they would like to say hello to. Plus had a chance to sit at a pub for a drink before walking.

Carlene, you're going to be able to lead the walks! That's great! I had heard that you weren't going to be able to! Yay!

And I am proud to list myself amoung their ranks.

( it's a toss up which is cheaper, gas or a room.)
saturdays being more likely.
