Went and saw 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' Friday morning at 12:05 am. I thought it was great.........BUT I and my daughter are HUGE Johny Depp fans.....so our opinion may be a bit biased.
So if you are not a Depp fan you may find the movie only mildly amusing.
Cheers!

I saw it friday, and I thought it was great. In a way I wish there was not another movie to compare it to, because it is so different from the old one. Definitly had some similarities to Edward Scissorhands, one of my favorite movies. I know some people will dislike the new one, but I dont see it as a remake as another version of the book. You wouldn't compare Ever After and Disney's Cinderella, both are versions of the same story, right?

Speaking of Scissorhand, I couldn't help but see a flash of Edward in the one brief shot of Willy holding the shears he used to cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony for his grand factory.
I actually know the lady who played Charlie Bucket's mother in the original movie. Her name is Diana Sowle, and she is a friend of my parents, so Wonka has been a favorite in my family for years.
I like the new version. Depp is so incredibly creepy as Wonka, and I like the balance the new movie struck between being faithful to the original (book and film) and updating the material.

I chuckled over that as well - but my daughter and Mom were not familiar with Johnny Depps movies so the flash was lost on them.
We went to go to see it last night, my DD basically dragged us. Mom expected to hate it, since she liked the original so much, I went with a fairly open mind, but slightly biased towards not enjoying it since Depp appeared to play Wonka in such a bizarre fashion. We all LOVED it, with DD falling in at the lowest rating for it.
I hope it comes out on video early - I have a feeling there are many more allusions/homages stuck in there!

I caught it last weekend and liked it a lot!! I thought the creepiness of Wonka and the sets really added to it. Danny Elfman did a great job on the music!! Oh.. and the Oompa Loompa songs.. great!

I liked the creepiness... it made the movie feel like something by Roald Dahl, definitely. I love his books, but they always make me feel just a tad unnerved. ^_^
and it's wonderful that they used the original lyrics for the loompa songs, and changed the tunes/style for each one... *glee*

I've always loved the original, but I actually think that C&CF was actually a better movie than the original! Which totally shocked me! I liked the ending much better, the original WW&CF didn't really seem to end well to me. But that's just my opinion. I'm also a big Johnny Depp fan, but I was worried that the wierdness of his look would creep me out, instead I found that it really worked well. I am really looking forward to this one coming out on DVD.
