I recently heard this on one of the local radio stations. Their plans are to protest at various churches of all faiths including the Congregation Beth el Binah at the Gay & Lesbian Center. The very first stop for them will be at the Dallas Holocaust Museum. The radio stations was asking their listeners for any suggestions on dealing with this 'church'. Anyone out there have any that I could pass on to the station??

Ignore them. Seriously. They WANT outrage, shouting, fighting, attention.

If there's any way to get a schedule of stops, post that in the newspapers for the days leading up to it and have everyone stay clear. Stay away from whatever area they'll be in, spreading their hate.

They want to make a scene - but not having an audience kinda negates that option.

Their schedule has already been posted and ignoring them was one suggestion sent out. Some say that if there is no one to listen to them, the church would pack up and move on to someplace else in hopes of finding someone to listen.

They WANT the outrage and reaction - so they'll keep doing what they're doing because someone is going to react, despite the word put out that they should be shunned and ignored.

If I could get the news media down here to NOT cover their protests, I would. But it's NEWS, it's an event... even covering it from an angle of 'shame shame' is going to get a camera out there.

Ask the news to all ignore them and the police to arrest them all for vagrancy, hold them all for 72 hours and then escort them to the state line with legal papers filed making it an arrestable offense for them to return.

How many times do I have to post this? We in the Kansas City area have dealt with Fred and his congregation for at least two decades. He doesn't protest in this area anymore. Why? Because we learned to ignore him - all of us - expecially the media.

That's why he's gone national - because he still gets a rise out of good people.

But until everyone just ignores him and he doesn't have the attention or enegry of the media or the public - he'll continue to seek out new venues to spew his venom and hatred.

He's by no means a stupid man - he's just an evil one.

I add my vote to the ignore him faction.

I realize ignoring these idiots is the best recourse. Let me tell you though they protested at a soldiers funeral in Minden Louisiana a few weeks ago. There was so many people in support of the troupes to stand in front of these people it was frickin amazing. We have to support the soldier families in all that we can and if its going to stand in line with hundreds to block out the hate filled rubbish coming from these idiots mouths I will. I feel so horrible for the families that have lost their loved one and then to have to stand there and see those signs it awful!

Glitter balloons exploding over theri heads makes for a rather nice picture. If nothing else works....send in about two dozen mimes. ::zeearteest::

OK, the visual I get on this one is just too funny. All I can picture is a line of mimes putting up imaginary umbrellas while glitter rains down all over the place.

There was a high school that fought back by holding a counter-protest. They sung uplifting songs, carried banners of acceptance, and spread general good will. You can ignore them right in their faces with a smile. As long as the counter-protesters don't engage in the hate, there shouldn't be any drama.

Man, the Westboro Krazy Train is on the road again...
They will be in Omaha to protest a high school teacher's funeral this time...there is nothing in the paper to indicate that she was connected to the military, just that she had a masters degree in education. She was killed crossing a street to get to her car after school, for crying out loud!
It's not even national news. Am I wrong to be a bit worried about what her students might do?

Apparently they think teachers are brainwashing children and they have "the power to keep the children of Doomed America (a) captive audience". Seriously they believe that::WTF::

Really I hope this Omaha man gets the turn out he is looking for to shield the grieving family.

BTW These people are the farthest thing from Christians that I have ever seen in my life and they need to be thrown in the loony bin:rant:

The weather is supposed to really suck tomorrow (42 and substantial rain) maybe they won't show since they won't have much of an audience other than the counter protesters.
Westboro obviously won't be offered shelter or any other comfort while they practice their craziness.

I'm busily watching the Supreme Court to see how they decide the Snyder v Phelps case before them...

I hope they slam the door on Phelps and his shit.

::runfore: I gotta go check that out...I didn't realize they had gotten to it at this time.

The case was heard the first of October. I only know this because it was the test material for my Business Law class a few weeks ago. I checked and the decision won't be rendered until summer next year.

Personally, I'd like to see Phelps and his ilk burning in hell with their backs broken after dying a slow, miserable, painful death from syph and gonorrhea. Legally, I get the feeling that the Constitution is on Westboro's side.

OK - serious reply this time. My son Cameron (retired U.S. Army, Iraq vet) called me last Saturday all excited. It seems there was a funeral for a young soldier from Weston, MO. Weston is a charming little town about 30 miles northwest of downtown Kansas City. Cameron and his friend Shane (who is currently in the National Guard) got word that the Phelps Phreaks were going to be in Weston to protest at the funeral and that just frosted Cam's cake.

So - he and Shane put on their class A uniforms and went to the funeral as a show of support for this young man's family. They met his family and offered thanks for their sacrifice and offered to stand at guard for the duration of the service (the family accepted). Because Weston is a small town in the midst of a farming community where most land is privately owned, and because of recently enacted laws, the Phelps group was relegated to protesting some distance from the church on city-owned property. Basically it was a parking lot at the end of Main street across from the Burley Tobacco auction house.

Cam was so excited because he and Shane went down to the protest site to support the Patriot Guard and a newly-formed motorcycle group called the Combat Arms Guard. Unlike the Patriot Guard which welcomes a wide range of members, the Combat Arms Guard consists of only actual combat vets (like Cam). Apparently by the time Cam and Shane got there - the found out the Phelps group was only there about 10 minutes (and no Rev. Phred in sight). When the handful of Phreaks brought out their signs and started to chant - none of the members of both motorcycle groups said a word. They just revved their bike engines in unison and the sound was so deafening the Phelps group packed up and left. The whole town pretty much celebrated their quick departure.

Cameron said the best part of it was there was not a single media outlet there to cover it. That, in and of itself was worth rejoicing. Had even Weston's tiny, weekly newspaper been there, they were sure the Phelps Phreaks would have stayed. The truth is if they're not getting media attention - there's no point in them protesting.

So my advice - and I pass this along from Cameron - is to keep the media away from these insulting circuses and allow the community to deal with the evil clowns. I think the Patriot Guard and the Combat Arms Guard are awesome and if a community is facing the Phelps group, they should invite both the PG and the CAG to rev their engines. Or get the local high school band or a choir or a garage band to play joyful music so loudly it will drown out the chants of the misguided ones and send them packing. The most important thing is not to give the Westboro group any media coverage.

I know it's difficult and extremely distasteful to deal with people who would exploit the abject misery and sorrow of families in their time of grief - but they choose these opportunities very carefully for their shock value and bet on being followed by the media. Every time a picture or a story about these horrid people appears anywhere in the public eye - they win. It won't be until good people work with local and national media outlets to NOT cover this carefully crafted "news" event that the Westboro folks will let up with their insanity.

Course - I hope that when Phred Phelps dies, the entire country will protest with signs that say "Apparently God hates Fred"

Well they came and they went. Per the story, a lot of the counter-protesters thought the Westboro folks didn't show. Looks like slinking in and out of town is all they did.
