In case anyone gives a hoot...

Still in Diego Garcia. Still disliking it, though I have found FREE, reliable internet. It's wired, but it beats $4/hour for shitty WiFi.

Work is hell. It's about to get harder. We've been pulling 12 hour days, and we're not even tending a unit yet. That's gonna happen, soon. We were informed that the Nuclear Support Facility will be open 24/7 when it does. THAT'S gonna suck ass.

I can't get my beloved Diet Dew, Coke Zero, Guinness, or Strongbow out here. None of it exists. I CAN get, sometimes, the Singaporean version of Mt. Dew (think Mt. Dew Throwback). Aside from that, I usually get a caffeine fix at the risk of the HFCS making me sick. Not always a good trade off.

I'm trying to qualify Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, which will give me 2 warfare qualifications, and thus more chest candy. :-)

Ok... you've been updated. Hard to tell more when NOTHING goes down on a 6700 acre island located 7 degrees south of the equator.

Thanks for the update. Wish I could send you some Coke, but it doesn't travel well at all (learned that the hard way). You are in my thoughts and prayers.

What would travel well? A man should not be without his caffeine.
What about chocolate covered expresso beans?

If you all aren't linked to Jim on facebook I have info for you....

We were chatting today on facebook about the soda issue and he said it would weigh too much to send. I told him about the "if it fits, it ships" boxes at the post office. They come in different sizes and for a flat rate anything that fits in the box can be sent. So, if you are willing to give plastic soda bottles a try (wrap them fully) you can do it for a fairly cheap price.

He also is dying for Franks Red Hot sauce. I am going to try and send some diet Dew out this week along with whatever I can get in the box.

Don't forget that we are collecting things to send to him in the hostel at PARF!

Diego Garcia, wild. The USPS Flat Rate boxes ROCK!!! I'm nowhere near PARF, sorry, ladies. But I am in the Pacific NW, and a fellow caffeine addict should not be without his beloved brew, so WHERE (yeah I know APO Diego Garcia, but we want the package to reach you) do I send this package of high-quality coffee, Jim? And no, it's not Starbucks, unless you just have to have Starbucks, it's something I think is better. I'll throw in something to make it with, but with what I had planned, you will need to get hot water. Can do? Send a PM or something.

Thanks to both of you. All of you really.

Tobasco just isn't spicy enough for me. Texas Pete lacks the flavor I enjoy. Frank's is a grand blend of heat and flavor.
And, you are the cat's meow! Just thought you should know!

Don't forget that we are collecting things to send to him in the hostel at PARF!

If I were the blushing type, I totally would be now. I assure you, as is standard practice, most everything will be shared with my "team mates." I will ensure they know the source. The Mount Hope Wenches rock!!!

Hot water is easy to come by. Nukes CANNOT live without coffee, in general, so we have a coffee maker in our main work space and our annex.

Addy is:

ET1(SS) Jimmy Warren
USS Emory S. Land (AS-39)
R-5 Division
FPO AP 96667

(If I goobered that up, I think Bean can correct it. I know she has the right addy.

Nice to see someone with some taste getting treats from home. All my kid wanted for the first part of Iraq deployment was beef jerky, hot rod magazines and chocolate chip cookies.

Hey all, the post office will send the large size flat rate box to an APO for $12.50 instead of $14.50!

Work, work, work, work, work. Seems endless.

Every day this past week was more than 10 hours of work. Two went right through dinner. And to top it off, I had to work from 0800 to 1430 today (Saturday, 8/28/10). UGH! I just want a friggin' day off where I don't spend most of it sleeping because I'm beat! Oh, and... we're supposed to fly out October 26th. Wish us luck that we don't get extended!

And thanks to everyone for the support!

SpeedKnight

Is it October 26th yet?

Well... we've just been informed that Saturday is a FULL work day. Sunday is safe, but Labor Day is aptly named because we'll be laboring away while the rest of the ship has the day off. So, we have a ONE day weekend, while the rest of the ship has a THREE day weekend. Oh... and there's no plan at all to make up for it. In fact, we've been told that our days are gonna be longer and that full Saturday workdays will likely be the norm.

Oh... and there's talks of extending us. Though, when I asked if I should cancel my Motorcycle Riders' Safety course that I have scheduled for November 4th and 5th, I was told no. We'll see. This place is wearing WAAAAY thin on me.

I'd say "The beer is in the truck," but it's actually, "The coffee is in the flat-rate box." Go wild, SpeedKnight, I stuck in a handy cup-sized coffee maker and filters therefor, with small Melitta measuring implement of destruction, and a couple of snacks that were the right size to finish filling the box. THAT ought to last you through October!

Be well. We are PCSing Real Soon Now... ah, the glories of moving day...!

I beg to differ. used to get bottles of root beer sent to me all the time while underway. wrap them in bubblewrap first

Thanks so much. I've only gotten one piece of mail, from my MiL, so far. I blame the Postal Clerks. I've never seen the ship's PO while it was actually open. lol

Latest word on the street is that the next team flies out on October 11th. We start turnover around the 13th. Should be flying out of here on the 21st. Rumor is that we're gonna fly east to go west. Sounds like stops in Singapore, Japan, Hawaii, then who knows where. Why we can't fly west is beyond me. It'd be a shorter distance and physically faster since, as we fly toward Norfolk, Norfolk will be moving toward us as the world turns. Science is fun. :-)

Then if they sent coffee, too, you may be in for an embarrassment of coffee... you'll be the "Coffee Connection" aboard... people will fight for a reason to visit your area :-)

PCSing in a week. packing and sorting and living with boxes and piles of stuff everywhere... I hate hate hate PCSing.... arrrrrgh!!!!

They didn't. Lotsa candy and cookies to share, though.

Next time I PCS, I'm staying in the area I live in now, so I won't have to move. After that, it'll be to retire. 3 years left, total.

Good idea, Speed... somewhere over Africa, Peet's coffee is being shuttled to Diego Garcia, by way of.... Antarctica, apparently, as this is taking so long! Kiss that "took about a week" goodbye, they are apparently doing a full cavity search on my poor coffee package.

The packers have been here two days, and suddenly everything is so uncluttered! Ahhhh... now I just have to finish the kitchen.

LMAO! Yeah, if it isn't in the mail yet, it won't make it to the ship before I leave. They're telling us we should be home the evening of the 22nd.

SpeedKnight

I know you wenches love my updates (or you just wish the ship would sink while I'm on it... I'll assume the first thing is true), so here's another.

Well... this past weekend found me with, essentially, 4 days off. I think, in total, I slept more this past weekend than the rest of my entire time deployed! That's cool... sleep makes the time vanish!

The great news is that the next team is here. We start turnover tomorrow! A week after that, I should be on a series of planes heading toward Norfolk, VA. Hope to be stateside and headed home with my family on the evening of the 22nd. :-)

Wow, we were moving across the USA while the coffee arrived... finally! Glad you liked it. It's available in a lot of commissaries Stateside, maybe overseas too. Great stuff, found it in 1998 when we happened to be living right near a Peet's coffeehouse in Oakland, CA.

So, you should be home by now, how's the adjustment going?

Home for Thanksgiving, now that's pretty cool.

All the best,
