I saw an ad on tv last night for Mythbusters. They are going to show the episode that they filmed at the rennie faire. Southern I believe. They will be testing the Robin Hood myth to see if it's possible to shot an arrow into another arrow.
Here's the info:
The episode is on tonight (Wednesday August 3) at 9:00 pm (eastern) on the Discovery Channel.
Should be fun!

Awesome, I love the Mythbusters! I also love the Mythbusterettes, because there is something incredibly sexy about hot babes that also know how to build stuff to blow other stuff up.
So cool.
And did anyone ever see the episode of Reading Rainbow that went to Faire?

My fencing club has proved that it's possible to parry an arrow with a sword.
Would Mythbusters be interested?

I saw a post on afr that they were at Tulare County Renaissance
Festival and not Southern. My bad.
Yeah I looove Mythbusters. What a fun show!! Even though I prefer the main guys, I do agree that it's great to see women blowing stuff up too!! It's not just a guy thing.

Yes, it is possible. I've done it once, and I've been shooting a bow since I was 6, but you need to be using broadheads. Any other type of arrowhead will just bounce off of the nock of the first arrow.

Is there skill to it though or is it just luck?
Would seem to me no matter how great a person is with a bow...splitting another arrow is just pure luck.

I'd say that it takes skill to get close enough for luck to succeed. :)

Ya know, I tried to watch it, and my volume suddenly was not working on my TV...messed up cable or something! Very frustrating, sitting and watching it with no volume... :augh:
So, was it worth watching?

Yeah I'd say it was worth it. They ended up calling the myth busted though. They just couldn't get the shaft to split the entire way... even at point blank range.

They said it was a one in 3000 shot. I don't think they got their poor assistant to shoot 3000 arrows, even with his compound bow. Very amusing video of the Faire!

I admit, there is a small amount of luck, just like in anything else. But 99.9% of the trick is in the skil of the archer. And keep in mind that Robin Hood used a longbow (so do I), not some nancy compound. And since I missed it (got called into work to help with a problem) I have to ask, did they use broadheads, field or target points? Like I said before, it's easiest with broadheads, and damned near impossible with field or target points.

They used broadheads for the main part of the myth, and they did split a few arrows, but they were more interested to see if an arrow could be split from nock to tip, not just a split in the shaft. They wanted it down the middle clean, even at point blank the arrow followed the grain of the other and didn't give them a clean split. Hell they even used a guide of tubing and still couldn't get a full split. But it was a great episode.

I love the Mythbusters! Those guys have got ot have the coolest jobs around designing all those effects - not to mention getting to figure out how to blow things up for a living! And debunking myths is a pretty cool sideline.
Ringling Brothers had a Cirque style one-ring tour a few years back, that featured an AMAZING crossbow artist. My daughter still talks about him shooting an arrow off of his own head using a chain-reaction of bows  (I think it was ten or twelve bows). I know that "Robin Hood" used a longbow, but I have no doubt in my mind that this guy could split an arrow with another, if given enough time to do the calculations and some practice. Actually - I have just been informed by the munchkin over my shoulder that she thinks he did split an arrow as part of the build up!
I gotta agree with Aramis and Pathos - I suspect it can be done, but it is a literal "longshot" that requires luck as well as a heckuva lot of skill!

On Mythbusters, they take urban myths, and then see if they really could happen. For example, they tried out the myth that there was somebody that was jumping on the bed and got his head chopped off by the ceiling fan. (Turns out that you can' t chop off a person's head even with a really powerful fan. You can really chop your neck up though.) They (Jamie and Adam) both work in the movies with special effects so they are really great at rigging stuff up. Usually they will try out the myth. If they bust it, then they try and see if it's possible to do the myth using other things. They love to blow stuff up!!! They have moved into movie myths which is how they managed to make it to a renaissance festival. They were testing the Robin Hood myth of whether it is possible to split an arrow all the way down the shaft with another arrow.
