Hey gang,

I've started working on the look and feel, to make the forums match the rest of the site. In the meantime, colors and layout might get a little wonky temporarily. Please bear with me.

Unfortunately, vbulletin isn't free, or I'd tell you just to switch over to them.

I don't mind paying if it is worth it. I own my own servers so that's not an issue, as long as it will run on Apache.

Yes, it runs on Apache - it's about $160 to buy the initial license, and then there is a $30 yearly license fee.

Is the yearly $30 a requirement of the licence, or is it just for support?

I never did understand how some software companies can get away with perpetual license fees just to run software that you've bought.

From their site:
vBulletin (Owned License)
The owned vBulletin Forum license allows you to run the software on your site indefinitely. Along with this license, you will receive one year of free updates. Beyond the first year, you will have to pay a nominal fee, currently $30, to obtain updates for an additional year.

This license includes free email and forum support.

So it's not just support, but upgrades - and considering how quickly vulnerabilities are discovered, not updating the software isn't an option, imho.

In that case, it's totally worth it.

Yeah, as it is, with the mods I have made, upgrading is going to be a pain in the ass - but vbulletin has more out of the box features than phpbb, so at least it won't be SO bad. vbulletin has been around enough that it's pretty stable as well. (Not that that means one wouldn't need to upgrade - even the most stable software can be brought to its knees with a new PHP version, mysql version, etc.)

Many question Madame Webmistress

What does everything mean like: the green dot next to my name and the rep power and the scales and where are the smilies and how do you get the emoticons into your signature? How in the world did I get to be a Senior Member???? What happened to the Karma?

I'm and totally not computersavy. I play games and check a few sites. I do a lot of writing, but anything that takes brain power? You lost me, babe.

Fret not - I'll be posting some how-tos soon. To find the smilies and such, you just have to make sure you're using the advanced editor (which you weren't) - they should show up in the post and signature forms now

The green dot is your reputation indicator. The more people give you positive feedback, the more dots you get. I get a full row of dots, cuz I'm the boss. :toocool:

Beyond that, you'll have to be a little more specific with regard to your definition of "everything". :-D

and where are the smilies
Please visit the new tutorial to see how to get to the smilies.

and how do you get the emoticons into your signature?
That tutorial above should help you with that too.

How in the world did I get to be a Senior Member????
The ranks didn't translate properly during the import from one board to the next.

What happened to the Karma?

The reputation is basically the same as karma, only the person giving you reputation points can add a comment as to why they are giving you props. For example, if you handled yourself very well in a thread that got hostile, or you took extra time to help explain something to a new person, etc.

What does everything mean like: the green dot next to my name and the rep power and the scales The green dot is your reputation indicator. Just a minor nit... the green dot(s) on the far right is your reputation indicator, but the green dot right next to your name is your online status indicator. Next to your name it will always be green, since if you're looking at it you must be online :-) Next to everyone else, it will be green if they are currently on the boards and blue if they currently are not.

You're right - I mixed up the dots. But it won't always be green - if you have chosen to "hide" your online status, it will show you as offline, even when you're online.
