Plague closes Utah campground

05:49 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 16, 2006

Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY - A campground at Natural Bridges National Monument has been closed because of bubonic plague detected among field mice and chipmunks.
Plague also has been found this spring in rodent populations at Mesa Verde National Park and Colorado National Monument.
National Park Service officials said there never has been a reported human case of bubonic plague originating from the parks or national monuments.
"We come down on the conservative side when it comes to closing campgrounds," said Joe Winkelmaier of the U.S. Public Health Service. "We just like to be sure when it comes to plague."
Several weeks ago, park rangers noticed a large number of dead field mice at Natural Bridges, about 40 miles west of Blanding. Chief Ranger Ralph Jones showed that tests indicated they died from the plague.
Rangers plan to insecticides to kill fleas in the campground area. Humans usually contract bubonic plague after being bitten by fleas that have bitten infected rodents. The campground could be reopened as soon as next week.
Plague occurs throughout the West, but is concentrated in the Four Corners area of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. An average of 18 cases involving humans are reported each year in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one in seven victims die.

THE PLAGUE????

What is this the freakin' middle ages?? I mean has a Ren Faire taken the reality just a bit too far?? *rotfl*

Actually, if this is true? We are in deep poo.::tinfoil:

Just think what would happen if the plague hits a big metropolis like LA or NYC or heaven forbid New Orleans! Who ever thought the plague would be back. Way too scarey. ~crawls into bed and pulls the covers over my head~

Pansy!
It is okay!
Thanks to hygene and better health practices, it is very rare to catch
the Plague, yes it still exists.
(I think the chances are the same as getting attacked by a Koala Bear)
No worries! That is why they closed up the place for a bit.
I did not mean this for scare tactics, *I'm sorry to worry you*

Oh, yeah, contrary to popular belief, the bubonic plague didn't die with the Middle Ages. It's been around and will continue to be around. (Rit's fascinated with this topic so, naturally, he tells me in gory detail all he's learned about it. ::shudder::)

I think San Francisco had a scare back in the early part of the last century where they thought the plague might have entered the city. If I remember right whole boroughs were quarantined for weeks.

So yeah...the plague has never gone away. And we still have no idea how to stop it.

I think its praire dogs type animals that carry it regularly and they are testing them every year. Also in 3rd world countries its still around but you never hear about it much. I think now they can control it with antibiotics ( I may be wronge).

It's actually curable. I think L.A. had a case recently or somewhere near there.
