Gods & Goddesses!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060608/ap_en_bu/tv_indecency

What are they doing, trying to reverse the US back into a bunch of Puritans?!?!

Do they have ANY idea how this could snowball into utter ridiculousness?!?!?!?!

If they have to fine EVERY broadcaster (TV & Radio) for what "they" consider indecent programming, you can just imagine what will be left on the airwaves.

I mean, let's face it, we all know that someone somewhere will find something 'indecent' no matter how innocent it is. People from all walks of life will start calling to complain about "minor" profanity (ie. damn, ass, etc), saying it is not appropriate for TV or Radio while their children could hear it. Doesn't matter time of day, kids hear things all the time.

Just look at what's on TV. I don't think I've watched one show (and I only watch about 3 hours a week, if that) and NOT heard someone swear or use innuendo.

Don't get me wrong, I'M NOT OFFENDED! But others out there are or would be and that's what makes this so ridiculous. If the FCC starts fining each broadcaster, how long before they have no money left to actually broadcast?

OK, I'm done ranting... back to your regularly scheduled indecnecy

I caught an article yesterday on the Drudge report. It seems a movie got a PG rating because it was too 'religious'. As memory serves it was but together by a Christian group, hence there was a Christian slant to the movie; but it got the PG rating because it 'might' offend people of other faiths.

The government is trying to 'strengthen families'????? How about families strengthening families, by way of the parents doing their job. There's something on the TV you don't want your kids to see? Turn the darn thing off. Install a v-chip. Take control of the remote.

There are several channels that air programming that my entire family finds offensive. Guess what? We don't order/don't watch those channels. Problem solved.

Grrrrrrrrr...

Hmm... I've actually noted that the MPAA has gotten fairly lax in their ratings lately, either from shifting views or pressure from studios. Some movies being released now are getting a PG when 10-15 years ago they would've gotten a PG-13. Me being me, I would've fought for a PG-13 rating on My Big Fat Greek Wedding for that one use of "sh*t" and some sexual situations/dialogue.

It's come a long way since the 1930s, when the producers of Gone With the Wind had to pay that fine in order to have the word "damn" in the film...

But you don't understand...it for the chillllllldren. Parents don't have any rights or responsibilities to their kids, other than to keep clothes on their backs, a roof over their head, and food in their stomaches. It's up to the government to 'educate', povide 'moral values', and 'protect' your children.

OH MAN!

We're ALL goin' to Hell.

The few times I 'needed' the (local) government to help 'protect' my children, said 'government' threatened my daughter (then age 5), scared her for years with the memories, and almost had me committing murder of a so-called peace officer.

Yeah right, the 'government'..... bah. :unamused:

You ain't kiddin', sista. Why, just within our parents' generation... Elvis' hips were "indecent"... and so was a married couple on a tv show sleeping in the same bed... and so was Jim Morrision saying "higher".

clip from article"Under FCC rules and federal law, radio and over-the-air television stations may not air obscene material at any time, and may not air indecent material between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. when children are more likely to be in the audience."

so this is why all the shows are moving to 10:00??

I feel if you have small kidlets don't let them watch tv you don't approve of- there are dvd's and videos or -Goddess Forbid you should actually READ to them....

Why are 3 yearolds quoting Spike tv??

Ya know - I am kind of on the fence about this. Now, I am a parent who monitors what my kid watches. She mostly watches Nick/Cartoon Network, The History Channel, TLC and Animal Planet if she's left to decide on her own to watch.

But, if we routinely watched the programming on ABC/CBS/NBC I would have to admit that I would adapt a more prudish attitude of what I wanted to see in the name of 'entertainment'. I mean, do we really need to see Dennis Franz's bare ass? Or a simulated orgy scene? There are certain words that I don't need my kid to hear - and I am not even talking about cursing. I'm talking about "hot" and "sexy".

Case in point: She was watching her dad play WoW one day. He was playing a character she had made - a female elf. Jon had just gotten some new armor and stuff and HG asked if she could see it close up. "WOW! That is so hot!" she exclaimed. Jon and I nearly fell out of our chairs. We asked her what she ment by that - she said that it ment that her characters outfit was "way cool". We asked her not to use "hot" to mean "cool" anymore, it just didn't sound good. No problem. She has also asked what "sexy" ment.

As an adult, I can choose what I watch/don't watch. There are just some things I don't want to see on TV though. But, I have a hard time with the government using families as an excuse to tighten up on what they consider "indecent". And then not have the balls to define "indecent". /shakes head...

Do I want to see Denise Franz waltz thru with no pants on - hell no! Will I complain when Ty works with his shirt off on Extreme Home Makeover - again, hell no!

yeah, gee, let me think... Dennis Franz's buttcheeks versus Ty Pennington's bared chest... hmmmm cheeks vs chest... :unamused: damn, all these difficult decisions.

and you're a horrid, horrid mother... monitoring what your child is doing, taking a vested interest in her education and actually talking to her. What's the world coming to?? she's going to need years and years of therapy.

/sarcastic humor

I could only wish more parents were like you and John. A good number of problems in this world today could be prevented if parents actually started parenting instead of spawning and leaving them to do as they please.

No one person can define 'indecent' for the masses. At some point we all should take a look around and define for ourselves what is indecent to us. I know it's a wide and varied scale, but it's not *that* varied and it's not that difficult.

And my standard reply in these types of situations: (my apologies if you've seen this before)

"PARENT" is a VERB!!!!!!!!!!!!
