Who could resist a cookbook with a title like that? Ok, title in full is:
Irish Puddings, Tarts, Crumbles, and Fools: 80 Glorious Desserts
by Margaret M. Johnson, Chronical Books, $24.95
My mother had homemade dessert every single night: I had to be coaxed to take a piece of my own birthday cake. Still am not a dessert person but this book is changing that rapidly. The drool factor is off the charts.
There are beautiful color pictures of simple-to-make Irish desserts interspersed with pictures of Ireland. They have wonderful names like fools and flummeries and syllabub. Many have Medieval roots including possets and syllabubs.
There are recipes for scones and Irish soda bread. There are recipes which call for Guiness or whiskey: Orange Whiskey Marmalade; Guiness Cake; Irish Mist Souffle. I'm not going to wait to December 25 to try Christmas Ice Cream Pudding.
This is an outstanding book. Highly recommended.
