I am having company on friday and want to serve something other than gin and tonics, scotch, cosmos, and basic martinis. Though these are tried and true I am eager to whip up somthing new! Any suggestions and recipes?

Margaritas and Daquiries are always good this time of year -- Strawberry, Raspberry, Mixed berry, the only limit to what you add is your imagination.

I am always in favor of the lovely liqueur Chambord--add to black coffee or hot chocolate and top with whipped cream dusted with cinnamon. Yummmmy.

Kyr -- make it with inexpensive chablis and Creme de Cassis -- approximately 2/3 chablis to 1/3 Creme de Cassis.
You can make it by the pitcher and serve over ice. Very yummy, not *too* fruity, yet not too dry, either. Very refreshing.

Amaretto or Apricot Sours are delicious. Sour mix and either Amaretto or some Apricot brandy. I like mine a little heavy so I use a ratio of 1:1. For a less alcoholic version, use 3/4 sour mix and 1/4 either Amaretto or Apricot.

One of my summertime favorites is Capt. Morgan's and Root Beer. The tast of the root beer really compliments the spices in the rum.
I was down in Mexico two weeks ago where the popular drink was the "michelada" (spelling?) which is a tall glass, salted at the rim, half filled with ice and lime juice, and topped off with the beer of your choice.
Bailies and Franjelica is another favorite, half and half on the rocks.
You can't go wrong with Long Island Iced teas.
Get a Mr. Boston's guide for lots of other ideas.

I am quite the fan of Midori Sours. I usually make them in a 50/50 mix and toss in mara..m..the cherries they put on top of icecream (my mad spelling skills...).
The sweet/sour mixed with the melon taste of midori..combined with the really nifty green color..

My all time favorite, any occasion drink is the KAMIKAZE! It goes down easy tastes great and looks pretty. In the dog days of summer it is especially nice to make it as a blended drink with ice... like a slushie.
KAMIKAZE Drink Recipe
3 parts ABSOLUT VODKA
2 parts Triple Sec
2 parts Lime Juice
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled shot glass, or blend with ice and put in a "rocks" glass.
PATHOS WROTE:How 'bout some good ol' pirate grog!! Got this recipe off the Rogues board.
1 Bottle of Rum.
3 Bottles of Water.
27 tsp of Sugar*rotfl*
Juice of 4 limes.
Though I like the thought of you being half in the bag and deciding to make this for some visiting Rogues or Wenches... studiously attempting to count out 27 teaspoons I think it would be easier if you just put in 9 tablespoons or a little bit over a half a cup of sugar. If you make this let me know how the counting turns out.:-D
The Doxie:zen:
Oohh! I love Kirs (or however you spell it!) either with wine or champagne! Nummy
Oh, for a fun one that you can make by the pitcher I recommend Mr. Funk of New Orleans - A Brennan's favorite.
Cranberry juice, champagne and peach schnapps

Fruity Slut
The fruity slut was introduced to me during a Seven Deadly Sins party, where each sin had his own drink. Lust was my guy friend, who dressed all in red and drag, and who was coincidentally gay. Thus the Fruity Slut was born.

Great party theme! I'd love to hear the other drinks that went with each sin.
Sure! Well, I was Vanity (Hehe!) and my color was purple, so I used Sangria, which is a wine mixed with fruit. I used a dark pinot noir to make it, added some apples and fresh grapes.
Envy was green, but he was underage. So we used limeade.
Rage was black, so we used iced coffee mixed with mudslide.
Greed was gold, we used champagne.
Sloth was blue, we used Hypnotic.
Gluttony was orange, so we used a drink who's name I can't remember, but it included Sunkist, Orange Juice, vodka, and a splash of tobasco sauce. (Weird and spicy/tangy!)
During the party, the party-goers had to wear a white t-shirt. To get a drink, you had to be marked with a sin. Each sin marked their own way. For example, I wrote, in purple marker, something I loved about myself. Greed used a gold rubber stamp of a dollar sign. Gluttony smeared cheese in a can on their shirt. But there's more! To be marked you had to DO something with the sin. Gluttony made you get into a cheetos eating contest, I required a compliment, lust required... well, he was a case-by-case basis. But it usually involved nipples.

What fun! I may have to do this for halloween, I'll be sure to give you proper wenchly credit for the idea. I'll name the sangria after you, love the pinot noir idea.

As a bartender, I have to say that I can no longer drink all the different mixed cocktails. I have gone for simplicity -- grey goose on the rocks with lime.
But..... here are some of my more popular drinks:
Margarita
This is the best because it is most like the original recipe. No mix involved:
2 parts good silver tequila like Patron
1 part Cointreau
1 part Rose's lime juice
Shake with ice and strain into a salted glass filled with crushed ice. This is a dry drink... If you want it sweeter, just add a touch more Cointreau.
If you want frozen Margaritas, put the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze until slushy. Crushing with ice cubes in a blender makes the drink watery and tasteless....
Do not use gold tequilas. They are aged and overwhelm the drink. It should be smooth and have a kick to it.
I have patrons who will come to the bar just when I am working to get this margarita. And it made me a very popular girl at the VTRF.... after hours of course.
French Martini
3 parts vodka
2 parts Chambord
1 part pineapple juice
Shake over ice and serve in a chilled martini glass with a twist.
A real Cosmo
6 parts vodka
1 splash triple sec
1 splash Rose's lime juice
1 splash cranberry juice
Shake over ice and serve in a chilled martini glass. This is the original recipe which is a dry lady's cocktail from the 50's. Today bars serve this drink too sweet and with too much cranberry. It should be pale pink.
Madras
2 oz. vodka
3 oz. orange juice
1 oz. cranberry juice
Build over ice in a tumbler.
Crantini
6 parts Stoli's cranberry vodka
2 parts Triple Sec or Cointreau (Cointreau will make it dry)
1 splash cranberry juice
Shake over ice and serve in a chilled martini glass. Garnish with frozen cranberries.
You can do the same thing with Rasberry vodka. Use frozen rasberries instead.
Remember to always use fresh ice when making drinks. And always use the best spirits. It does make a difference.
Oh, and the most important thing is to have fun!!!!!::beerbud:

Mmmmmmmmmm Grey Goose, ice, lime juice! Thanks for all the info. I agree about simplicity, sometimes ya need to just get to the point and enjoy the main ingredient for what it is. That's why I love a nice glass of Johnny Walker black and when I can afford it gold or blue Johnny!

Mojitos - cuban version of the Mint Julep.
take some mint leaves and a smattering of sugar (it's adjustable to taste) and muddle at the bottom of a glass. fill with ice, add a splash of water/soda water and fill with rum. White rum is best.
sip slowly and enjoy the steamy evening.
I'm with m'Lady on this one. Mojito is very fashionable right now; smooth and refreshing with great presentation. Fresh mint leaves can be hard to come by unless you are lucky enough to have them in your garden (once started they grow like weeds). Use Havana Club white rum if you access to it, otherwise Bacardi Silver.

really? Mint's hard to come by for you? We've got it in spades in the grocery store. If I thought it'd last, I'd send you a few 'fresh boxes'.
And, I think I have the pleasure of being the first one in the world to actually grow mint... then honestly kill it. it took over the pot I'd put it in with another herb (not knowing it'd do that) and not knowing what I did, it wound up dead within a week. I haven't tried gardening since.

my hubby likes the grapetini..
1/2 (measure) grape juice- chilled
1/2 (measure) ciroc- chilled
shake it.
pour into martini glasses whose rims have been dipped in grape koolaid (wet the rim and dip on a plate or bowl w/ 1-2mm of the grapey sugar) and garnish w/ 2-3 frozen grapes (spear them and freeze overnight, ahead of time).
supposed to taste like candy.
