Listen, I'll admit, Hitler was a genius in his way. Arguably one of the greatest orators to have ever lived. He 'DID' have alot of good ideas (volkswagen) and if he did not succumb to his genocidal instincts and either exiled who didn't fit his or allowed them to live in peace chances are he'd be remembered as one of the greatest leaders in history. To have brought a destroyed and defeated people and from poverty, squalor and national depression to become a world super power in less than ten years is down right amazing.

Some 16 years ago while in college, I knew such people. I knew these white supremists who eventually had kids, named their brood Heidi" and "Liesl" (they are Americans, mind you)... and they pronounced their "white power" hatred to their kids.

I actually sat through much of the TV bit on them last night... sort of like getting sucked in by watching an accident on the highway... I just couldn't turn it off.

The girls are indeed homeschooled, and their mother will continue to have full custody of them, because their father is apparently a worse parent (pretty severe drug problems, threatened the girls lives in writing when the mother left him yada yada)..... The main feeling I got coming away from the TV bit was that it's sad and angering how narrowminded and misinformed a view of the world these children are being given. For example, they where asked about how they could love Hitler so much when he was responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews.... their response? "So many things are exagerated, I don't even think there where 6 million Jews alive on the plannet back then, so how could he have killed that many?"

No the names aren't bad, but that's not the point. They named their girls these names for a specific reason... images of Nazi Germany. The names Heidi and Liesl are obvious German names, but for them and their friends, it hits to a specific point in history for Germany. And that's why they did it.

One of the case members at the Colorado faire actually does have "Adolph" for his given first name, however, it's not a case of his family being Nazis. It's a case of it's been a long-standing tradition in his family that the first-born son is named "Adolph".

"Pietro", I think, might actually be Italian for "Peter", but I won't swear to that.

When I was in high school, one of my summer camp counselers had the last name 'Hitler', only he pronounced it "HEIGHT-ler".

The really funny part was that he was skinny with long dark hair and a beard; he was a dead ringer for most of the common depictions of Jesus. (The way we'd usually greet him when passing him by would be to thrust our hands out sideways and tilt our head, and he'd respond in kind :-D )

These kids are raised with hatred of other people being a normal part of life. Being a Catholic myself, I can tell you I was never raised to hate or hurt anyone as part of my religion.

"suffer ye not a witch to live"...In Deuteronomy 13:6-16, the Lord instructs Israel to kill anyone who worships a different god or who worships the Lord differently...In Luke 19:22-27, Jesus orders killed anyone who refuses to be ruled by him.

Yet most christians do not act on those teachings... beliveing them is fine but to act upon them places your actions under the rule of law.

To tell someone who and what than can "hate" is not only a frighenting thought but something that is compleatly unenforcable!

Lucky for me, I've never met a witch that lives up to biblical standards. I think it's all up to interpretation, myself. I don't think they meant "witch" as in, the pagans who practice another religion, but that's just me.

I'm afraid they absolutely DID mean that when they say witch. Not only does it back up the "death to all who worship a different god" passage that someone earlier had mentioned but includes those who practice magic, divination etc. King James instituted it but changed his mind later when he realized it would mean he couldn't use his trusty soothsayer anymore before he went into battle etc. but it was never removed from the bible.

When I was in high school, one of my summer camp counselers had the last name 'Hitler', only he pronounced it "HEIGHT-ler".

The really funny part was that he was skinny with long dark hair and a beard; he was a dead ringer for most of the common depictions of Jesus. (The way we'd usually greet him when passing him by would be to thrust our hands out sideways and tilt our head, and he'd respond in kind :-D )

Sounds like you're describing how my cousin Danny looked when he was in college. He was a Pratt Brat, and his senior portrait (longer dark loose curls and neat, full beard...coupled with large soulful eyes...posed in 3/4 where he's looking 'off camera'/'into the distance') had us calling him 'Daniel of Nazareth' for awhile. :)

I actually had a black teacher tell our entire class that only white people could be racist. He said everyone could be prejudiced, but only white people could be racist, cause they held the power in our country.

It's NOT just another city, like Paris or Philadelphia. At least it won't be for probably another hundred years. That's a name that not only points to a specific time and place, but G-D, could you imagine having to explain *why* you got that name? B/c my parents think that what happened there was a *good* thing???

I'll admit, phonetically, it's a pretty word, but historically, recently, within living memory, it's infamous.....you have to wonder what the girl's middle name is.

You can teach your kids whatever you want, but shouldn't you first teach them to make their own decisions? To question what they're told? To find their own truths? To make them secure enough so that if they choose another road different than yours they can be at peace with that?
Granted, you don't need to slip that into every conversation, but it starts with little decisions and grows from there. I'm not raising my daughter to be a 'mini me', I'm raising her to be her own person, one who thinks and searches for the truth, regardless of how much people tell her "this is the right thing, trust us..."

Yeah. It was a night class at our university. Our class fought him on it for three hours a night, every Wednesday night, for a month. He finally wouldn't let us talk about the topic anymore, but he didn't talk about it either. He just moved on. The class was called Human Relations for Teachers (an education course.) The point was that it was supposed to be multi-cultural. It was *only* about the african-american race. We discussed nothing else.

there is a school of thought that if you get back to the original languages, and translate them without any politcal or social biases, the Bible does not actually contradict itself.

it's pretty fascinating research into ancient history and the evolution of language! (primarily the research, not so much the Biblical texts...you can only read so many 'begats' before your eyes cross and blood shoots out your ears.....)

Never officially, but he doesn't work here anymore. We told enough other teachers and admin that he was doing it, but we never filed an official report or anything. I haven't seen the man since that semester, and magically we have a new basketball coach now. (He was also varsity basketball coach, and had a tendency to have his sister teach for him when he had a basketball conflict. She wasn't qualified, but since she never actually *taught* us anything....she only ever had to listen to presentations or show a video.)

Actually, in the fundamentalist (and this isn't necessarily religious fundamentalism) homeschool community, this is *precisely* what's being avoided. Many of these parents teach their kids in order to indoctrinate them and to have the kids parrot the parental beliefs, values, thoughts, etc. *Obedience* (often blind) of the children to the parents is the goal. It's interesting b/c the hs community--at the risk of essentializing it--can be broken down into two distinct groups: one (what I call the hippie-granola) group that espouses creative and critical thinking, individualism, etc. and the other (unfortunately the loudest) group that homeschools for a hardcore, usually fundamentalist, (often) religious reason.

Oh, and yeah, we're of the "hippie-granola" group, where I write, present at hs/unschool conferences, etc. So we not only encourage our kiddo, but also model & live creative and, especially, critical thinking. We definitely want our son to think for himself.

It's gone on in elementary school, to middle school, to high school, and more recently, in my college, a guy was discussing how black men are an "endangered species" because the "white man" holds all of the power and doesn't want them to go anywhere. I told him, if you want people to stop treating you differently, stop victimizing yourself. He got all offended. He was like, "If I was walking at 2AM in the city I'd be arrested just for being Black." So I said, "Okay, I'd be raped. The moral; don't walk in DC at 2AM." Then he backpedals and says women shouldn't walk alone at 2AM anyway. Ugh.
