Considering some of the clothes being marketed to kids these days (including thongs for toddlers...yes I said THONGS) I am all for dress codes in school. The district I substitute for has uniforms and the kids have no problems with it. The teachers dress business casual and some Fridays can wear jeans.

As a student... I would have said "NO WAY! I'LL WEAR WHAT I WANT!"
As a parent... it would have been sooooo much easier on my nerves and wallet.
I was actually pretty lucky with my 4 kids. I set a standard and either they adhered to it or they bought the clothes themselves. If they bought something I thought inappropriate for school, it either went back or was only worn on none school days.
There was never a problem because in this house... Mom was the boss.

When I was a teenager, I was allowed a *little* lattitude, but always had to pass Mom's approval before leaving the house for school. It usually wasn't an issue as far as clothing, because I've always been more conservative in dress. I usually got the 'You're wearing too much blush. Go wash it off' admonishment.
The Demigod's school district has had a fairly strict dress code for years, and it doesn't seem to be a problem They also have rigid rules about cell phones, mp3 players and other forms of portable electronics use. The only item of clothing he owns that wouldn't pass dress code muster is a Guinness sweatshirt (clothing can't promote or 'advertise' alcohol or drug use). He knows that and doesn't wear it to school.
Part of having teenagers that make appropriate choices for themselves is to have had parents making appropriate choices for them when they were really young, to instill concepts of what is and is not appropriate and a family's standards of 'good taste'. I have to admit I was really anal about what the boys wore to school when they were little (part of that was that Older Brother Rogue had enough difficulties being sooooo ADHD that I figured that it couldn't hurt his perception in the eyes of his teachers if he was dressed neatly -- things like chinos, polo shirts and button downs and 'nice' jeans -- when other kids were wearing sloppy sweatpants and t-shirts), so their personal taste tends to run along the lines of the clothes they grew up wearing -- more or less. :)
I gathered from this article that the district involved does have a dress code. Have they not been enforcing it strictly until now?

Hell, I got sent home from school for wearing that Metallica teeshirt that had the toilet on it... Mostly because it said, "Metal up your ass" on it" At the time I was pissed. Now I see it. Although, I got picked on for how I dressed anyway. Totally ahead of my time with the striped stockings 12 years ago, thank you very much.
We weren't even allowed to wear the Nike "Just Do It" stuff because "do it" meant "have sex"... All I have to say is that in my Junior and Senior year of high school, I must have gotten sent home for my attire, mostly denim cut offs cut off just below the knee with funky tights, 10 times. But, the girl who wore her skirt up to her ass with no tights or stockings (and also got snagged doing the Spanish teacher) could go to school like that every day.
