Some IWG members have teamed up to knit/crochet scarves for The Orphan Foundation of America's Red Scarf Project. This is a program that sends care packages to college students who have been in the foster care system. You can read more about it at:

If you plan to participate, please join our Wench craft-a-long for this project!

How fantastic! I'm forwarding this on to Local 34.5's other boards (as not all of us watch this forum). We have lots of knitters and crocheters so hopefully we can have all sorts of scarves finished by January. Lucky for me, I found a whole bunch of nifty red yarn on sale at Jo-Ann's the other week!

Now I just need someone to teach me to knit or crochet. Anyone know any good sites or books?

This is the book that taught me to knit (as well as getting me to the group that I found where I learned even more):

Debbie Stoller's knitting website (as well as links to Sticth and Bitch groups across the US):

Here is the crochet version of her how-to book:

You can also find some good things here, including demonstrations:

I can't tell you how much I have learned from joining a knitting group at the local coffee shop. I'd be willing to bet that, if you went to one, you'd find people who would be more than willing to help you learn. Come with an open mind (and lots of patience!), and you'll be off and running in no time!
Personally, I think knitting is much easier than crocheting. I have crocheted since I was little, and I started knitting about two years ago. Many people will complain that knitting is "so hard." There are really only two stitches you need to know for knitting versus many for crochet. Knitting may take longer (and take longer to see progress on the finished product), but I love the look and feel of something knitted. It's very relaxing... I try to do a little each day to relax. :)
Let us know how it goes!

Yanking this for our Local 57 group too. We also have knitters and crocheters who don't see this board.

How's everyone doing?
I've managed to finish one scarf (lovely 3-strand yarn, but he** to work with!) and start another. Another Bristol knitter (Paradox) has finished one for the project too.
Anyone else?
