Does anyone here play in the virtual world of Second Life? If it a free online simulation where you can become anything that you want.

I've been in once or twice, and my former roommates are developers (Flipper Peregrine and Jennyfur Peregrine), but my computer just isn't fast enough. Alas.

I did a con today that had a panel done in both real life and Second Life. There was a large screen, and we could see all the avatars, who were looking back through a "window" in the sim room at a live video feed of the panelists. The subject was RL/SL commerce and economics, and I was fascinated. I have to admit, I didn't catch a lot of what was being said, as i was too busy geeking out on the whole concept, and on seeing what faster computers than mine can do.

But wow. It's definitely not a game.

I've been badgered to join, and I think now that I've finally got a computer that can actually handle it, I'm going to try it out. Is it like one of those things where you have to be on hte right server or something to be able to find your friends?

The answer would be no. The Second Life grid is like a continent. Each region (or square) of land has its own server and they are all interlinked. You can IM your friends from across different regions, but if you wanted to talk "face to face" you would have to teleport to the same region your friend is in. Think of it like the difference between calling someone on a cel phone and then popping into their house for a visit.

My name in-world is Silverwind Tzedek and I can usually be found at a place called Moulin Rouge Island.

I'm Ysobelle Zou, and I have some land in Indigo, behind the GNUbie store. You can't miss it: it's on the coast, and it has an oak forest. Ping me when you're online: I'm almost always there, especially at night.

We have a few Wenches in-world; I'm trying to get an actual Guild presence there, just for the fun of it. And when MayFaire Moon comes online, watch out.

It's like crack, I swear....

Okay. I am very intrigued by all this talk. Now, how do I join? And what kind of speed on a computer are we talking about? Mine is a Inspiron 4000 so it is a bit old..... could it handle this? Is this anything like RuneScape, a game my brother's girlfriend is nagging me to join?

Start here: www.SecondLife.com

I've never done anything else like it, but I've been told it's nothing like The Sims, or anything else, for that matter. It costs nothing to start, but there's a literally unlimited number of things you can buy in-world. For that, you do need money, but $1,000 Linden dollars-- the in-world currency-- will run you about $4. $4.02 some days. Clothing, for example, is the most popular thing to buy, and a full woman's outfit will generally run you in the $300-Linden dollar range. But there are plenty of places to get freebie stuff. You can also shop for hair, boots, even skins, to completely change the look of your avatar's body. You can get specialised animations to make your avatar do funny-- or naughty-- things. I bought one last night to make my av swoon; very useful when I see something utterly delicious.

But it's not just shopping, of course. I often spend my time just exploring. There are literally thousands of sims-- simulated regions-- and each one is different. There's Caledon, which has a steampunk theme (Victorian cyberpunk), and where people wear gorgeous clothes and tend to speak in complete sentences and adress each other as Mr. and Miss. There's a Diagon Alley, where you can wander around bookstores and wandmakers. There's a gorgeous sim called Svarga, which is a mountainous island with a temple in the middle, and has a virtual garden experiment running with birds, bees, sun, rain, and cross-pollinating flowers. There are elven-themed sims, RP sims, and, of course, lots of sex-themed places. If nothing else, it's absolutely fascinating to see what people come up with when they don't have to worry about physics, or building costs, or sometimes even taste!

You can pretty much be anything, and go anywhere, in Second Life. It's a lot of fun.

Abranimations! And it was only $50L! Which is good, cos I thought I lost it, got really annoyed, bought it again, and found it reappeared in my inventory an hour later. Yay, Linden Labs. Woo. No, really.

Glad we finally found you. And tonight's teleportation problems got worked out in about twenty minutes or so. We bought some animations, and watched DJ's head explode and his skeleton come screaming out of his AV. It was hysterical. And Vix bought a hootchie-mama dance, I think. I later took her salsa dancing-- it's an oddly fun thing to do.

The grid was down this afternoon for updating, which usually happens on Wednesdays. I should have taught you the SL mantra: "We love SL, despite SL."

Back again tomorrow?

I just wanted to take a minute to tell you ladies how much I have enjoyed this. With gaming there is always this push to do something; kill things, run a quest, pvp. In second life I can just shop, bargain hunt, play dress up or dance the night away. But on my own whims. Awesome.

Hey, Jayde! Glad to see you in SL last night...sorry I wasn't able to stay longer, but anytime you see me, feel free to IM! Yso has been a huge help to me in the "help a n00b" stuff for SL, and I'd be happy to pay it forward by showing you around anytime!

Shopping is the best part so far...in a week, I've found freebies (and bought clothes); enough to outfit a small third world country! Once the buying fervor dies down, I'll be looking to explore and see what's out there. Er, in there. Well, either way. ;-)

And Kate's right...it's verra addictive. I think my friends outside of SL are gonna spring an intervention on me any minute. ::runfore:

LOL, Arte, you're right, it does sound odd...and no, I don't shop on Sesame Street. "Hey Big Bird, how many pocketbooks will you sell me for this letter L?"*rotfl*
$L's are the currency of Second Life...kinda like Monopoly Money. ;-)

Yeah, there's salsa dancing! There's alllll kinds of dancing! So far I've been to an Irish pub and two '80s nightclubs (one of them 100% Duran Duran, yum)! It's amazing how much fun we have there, LOL...and a little twisted. But, to be honest...

LOL that's not unusual...I spent my whole first session flying into ceilings, walking into walls and people, and getting hopelessly lost when trying to fly someplace. I felt like a lost kitten, meowing for help.

It gets easier the more you tinker with it!

Oh, and how about that new hot guy, King Boberak? ::yay::

I may have a slight advantage from the almost decade of online gaming background I have. The flying is suprisingly like the City of Heroes game (ok I admit, I played Villians more!).

The dancing is fun, clubs amazingly fun and shopping beyond anything you can imagine. I am really enjoying learning how to make prims too. Before long all the wenches will be sporting my clothes! Or so I hope. hahah

Welcome aboard Jayde! And King Bobak you dirty dirty man, welcome aboard!

Hopefully you guys have two computers in the house.

I'm actually going to dedicate some real time in cleaning out my inventory, and I'm going to try really really hard not to buy more stuff. I thik I have enough. Except a coat. I think I might need a coat. Or a cloak. But for that, I want to learn how to make it. I have a specific in mind.

Cali, when we were watching you make that skirt, was that island like a tutorial? I saw the signs with the shapes and things...

Calimaryn
01-17-2007, 11:56 AM
Hey Kate, It was actually just a random 'Sandbox' that I picked out of the search line up. I would highly suggest one not too popular or a low lag one if they list that in the description.

Also if you want to learn about making Primative shapes search in game for the Ivory Tower, its a FABULOUS spot that has each step explained in a notecard. Definately worth the time to gather up each card for each lesson and read at your leisure.

Soon as the WoW craze is over (or when we go on vacation Saturday) I will be back on! Hopefully my ground tentacle skirt will become a pretty flexable skirt with some tweaking.

Keep in mind that you need a pretty good video card too; I'm not that familiar with laptops, so I'm not sure how high-end a video card you can get for one.

If being able to play SL is important, check the system requirements on their website befoer you by hardware.

Err? *blink*

My laptop runs the game just fine via wireless connection. Is that unusual?

Oh no, please tell me it's not like the "bumblebee factor." You know, that urban legend that bumblebees should not be able to fly, due to their structure/lack of aerodynamics, but that they DO fly because THEY don't know they can't?

I don't know the specs on the laptop he was looking at getting. I know he said it "has built in, so all we'd need is a new wireless router" I so hope he understands what he is talking about.
