View Full Version : Cookies and Weight Loss don't mix...

Will the insanity never end? This reminds me of a scene in "Troop Beverly Hills" where the girls sell cookies outside of a spa, except for it's not near as funny. I agree with the woman quoted in the article... grown men and woman should be able to say no to cookies...

Weight-loss center blasts Scout cookie sale

By KARA L. RICHARDSON
Staff Writer

RARITAN BOROUGH, NJ -- A Girl Scout cookie conflict with a local weight-loss center has resulted in a semisweet ending.

The conflict began Friday evening when some LA Weight Loss Center clients were upset that Girl Scouts were selling cookies in front of the neighboring Blockbuster video store, said an LA Weight Loss counselor who would not give her name. Both stores are in a shopping center at Route 206 South and Orlando Drive.

"It's a conflict of interest and it's in poor taste, but the girls didn't know who they were asking," the counselor said.

The clients told the branch manager, who called the weight-loss center's corporate office.

Dorothy DiNorcia of Raritan Borough was renting a movie in Blockbuster when she said she heard a clerk there tell his manager, "I have LA Weight Loss on the phone. They are threatening to call the police if we don't get them (the Girl Scouts) to move from in front of our store."

DiNorcia said, "It was ridiculous. Grown men or women can't say no to cookies?"

Christy Boyle, spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Rolling Hills Council, said Troop 1065 of Bridgewater had permission to sell in front of Blockbuster for the fall cookie sale fundraiser but that after the complaint, the girls moved their table to the Blockbuster entrance farthest from LA Weight Loss.

The next day, Boyle said, the cookie manager of the Girl Scouts of Rolling Hills Council met with someone at LA Weight Loss to discuss the issue.

The two sides agreed to have the girls stagger their selling schedule to be more sensitive to clients attending meetings at LA Weight Loss, Boyle said.

Girl Scouts from another troop will return to Blockbuster on Friday evening to sell more cookies, Boyle said.

Boyle said the girls have been selling cookies in front of Blockbuster for years but never had a problem before Friday evening.

I think it's brilliant marketing on the part of the scouts.

Next, they should set up a jello shot stand outside an AA meeting. :-D

You know, from one who is a perpetual dieter, I understand where LA Weightloss is coming from.. BUT here woud be a perfect example for a class on on self-control. Do you call and scream at the local supermarket because woman and men who attend your spa, can't say no to buying cookies and buy selling them in their store you are jeopardizing their success at weight loss? Why would you do that to the Girl Scouts? they're little girls trying to raise money for their programming. For cryin' out loud. give them a break! You don't want to buy their cokkies then don't. Don't make their life and harder than it already is. It's hard enough on these kids and leaders even belonging to an organization like the scouts (boy or girl).

EXCUSE ME PLEASE!!!! Get over it and use some self-restraint. Just give the girls a donation of $2 and walk away. "I'm on a diet but let me help out." Everyone understands.

christonacracker!!!! Just say no!

Well hell, since they're in front of blockbuster, go rent an exercise video, pick up some cookies (or not), and go home.

The owner should have told them to let the cops come. It would have made even bigger news and made the corp look like a bunch of fools.

Next thing you know, they'll be threatening Blockbuster to get rid of their candy and popcorn.

I mean seriously, do they own the store that blockbuster occupies? I doubt it. IMHO when they own the whole frellin' strip, then they have the right to tell another store not to have someone/group set up selling things like that.

All the years I spent selling cookies the only place we really had to set up to sell was in the grocery store near my house. They welcomed us willingly! I mean really, they sold cookies too. I can't how many times I heard people say to me, my troopmates, and/or my mother, that the girl scouts really should seel tupperware. Some of these people don't understand, the money doesn't fall from trees for these girls, and things like tupperware and the like tend to not give as much back cash-wise as the companies they have the cookie agreements with.

This seems like another instance of some overweight people blaming eveyone else for their weight issues. "I have no self control, therefore you are forcing these cookies on me and I now have to buy them and eat the whole box. It's the Girl Scouts' fault I'm fat....."

First on the left, black leggings and skirt in the second one.
And second on the right in the third one.
As for the girl scout thing? The uniforms were NOT AT ALL FLATTERING.

Yes we had saddle shoes, red and white ones. They made an awesome sound when you stamp on the wooden floors, but the leather was cold outside. We had to wear the little white ankle socks. Our skirts were navy blue with alternating white and red pleats and our sweater was a big white wool with a giant M over a megaphone. Hair had to ponied, pigged or braided, no loose locks, with red white and blue ribbons. (get the theme here?)

We didn't have pom poms on our shoes but we had f****ing big red white and blue one. They were doubles: a dowel with red and white on one side and blue and white on the other, it made them look bigger than normal, huge. OF course by the end of season there wasn't much left. We didn't use pom poms during basketball czuse they shed all over the floor and they guys might slip.

This was all in the 60's guys. Yes I'm old, very very old.

One of my team's favorites was:

It's an all girls school and the cheerleaders were like a sort of enforcement squad. If our b-ball players came off the court with scratches and gouges, we'd "talk to" the players on the other team after the game.
And boys say that girls don't play rough......
