DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- A homeowners' association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.
Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs.
He said some residents believed the wreath was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said.
"Somebody could put up signs that say drop bombs on Iraq. If you let one go up you have to let them all go up," he said in a telephone interview Sunday.
Lisa Jensen said she wasn't thinking of the war when she hung the wreath. She said, "Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing."
Jensen, a past association president, calculates the fines will cost her about $1,000, and doubts they will be able to make her pay. But she said she's not going to take it down until after Christmas.
"Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied," she said. "What if they don't like my Santa Claus?"
The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive."
The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.
Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything.
Kearns fired all five committee members.

"And His name shall be called (among other things) the Prince of Peace."

Who the heck has been living under a rock and thinks a peace symbol is satanic?

Idiot HOA rule interpretation. "Oh, we can't allow anything that might be disruptive." This isn't disruptive. Nobody has any cause to be offended by a peace wreath. This is some bullies trying to intimidate a neighbor. Get a life, losers!

For at least 20 years, the peace symbol has been known as the Cross of Nero. The arms of the cross are broken and pointing towards the ground symbolizing the downfall of christ. Cults that Kill, very interesting book to read. Has a lot of information in it. If I remember correctly, it was written by a pair of police officers.

That being said. Not everyone is aware of that particular meaning. The peace meaning is more familiar to people.

Yes, but we can't ignore the longstanding tradition of ignoring the facts if they don't support your position.

Mr. Kearns needs to get a life

HOA's are just a tool to help certain people get in touch with their inner facist anyway....

Saw a report on the news this morning that the HOA is dropping the whole thing and the homeowner can leave the wreath up.

It's just a peace sign made out of wreath material. That's it. No signage, no commentary. Just a little green peace sign on the front door.

I think it looks groovy, actually.

And I'm glad the homeowner gets to leave it where it is.

Disturbing that it got this far, though, isn't it?

I think it's more disturbing that Mr. Kearns has got this far. You'd think someone would have helped him out of the gene pool by now....

Oh, no-- he's just doing what G-d and our Government seem to love!

According to some, that is.

Yeah but what about the 5 ppl of the committee he fired? Are they being reinstated? That Scrooge fired them before the holidays. I already went off on a few ppl in the "Talk about it" part of aol...esp the biblethumper who kept misquoting scripture & some misguided pagans that kept insisting it was a futhark or somesuch. Yes, it looks like Elk, but it's not. And the peace symbol is actually semaphore signs for Nuclear Disarmament (N & D)...which is about as much world peace as u can get.

I don't know that I'd worry about those "fired" from the board - it's a homeowners association - I doubt they're paid positions. More like little neighborhood demi-gods. Gotta love 'em. All titled up and nowhere to wield their "extraordinary" powers. LOL

No-- they were the ones who said they didn't mind! I'd rather have them on MY committee-- if I had one!-- any day.

Oh, fer the luv of.... Hasn't that whole cult thing been debunked already?

I don't know how many of you remember the whole "The Satanists are coming, the Satanists are coming!!" thing of the 1980s, but it was basically mob hysteria promoted by A) freaks and the mentally challenged, B) those with a political/social agenda promoting *their* particular form of Christianity, and C) entrepeneurs who went on the lecture circut (including law enforcement, like the authors of "Cults that Kill") capitalizing on people's fear and spreading misinformation.

For the record: "recovered memories" of abuse are highly unreliable, since their purpose is to help a person in psychological distress make sense of their problem, NOT to uncover evidence of crimes; despite claims that thousands of teens were being ritually slaughtered every year, nobody has yet to find the bodies after 10-20 years; cult-busters are well-known for just randomly making shit up in order to sell books and lectures; and, can you say scapegoat, moral panic, and witchhunt?

I recommend "Satanic Panic: The Creation of a Contemporary Legend" (Victor, Jeffrey S., 1993.), available on Amazon.
