Ok, its that time of year and I'm wondering what the opinion is of giving/receiving holiday greeting cards?

Through the years, I sent cards. It started with only a few at first and then snowballed to the ridiculous. The last time I sent out cards....erm....3 years ago?...I was up to 250+ cards.

This year, I have chosen to send out only a few (relatively speaking).

I just wondered what everyone else thought.

EDITED: I forgot to put return addy on them too!

I'm the complete opposite, have almost never sent them out. Don't even know why really, just don't.
Yeah, I'm weird, I know it, tho!

I'm sending a few here and there. I have never sent out very many and I tend to have a relatively small group of friends.:-D

This year I am sending out about 45 cards. Most of them go out to my family and friends - Jon's family is small, so only 3 go out to his kin.

This is actually the first time in a couple of years that I have sent out cards. The time usually gets away from me and by the time I feel like I have a chance to sit down and write them out - it's Dec 25 and way to late to send them.

My mum used to send hundreds - and we'd get a ton, too. I always kinda liked it - it made me feel connected to people and I loved to see all the different cards. If I remember correctly - mom has some clever little device to display a number of cards - the rest went into a basket.

I try to send out cards every year - but I admit I missed the last several years. And I'm sure those of you who know what a wordy wench I am won't be surprised to find out I send a holiday form letter, too. But I usually dress it up like a newspaper page and include pictures and stories about what both of my boys are doing. I've even had several relatives complain when they haven't gotten them - so I guess they're OK.

I do love to get cards with notes or letters so I know what people are up to.

I send out about 20, to family and close friends like family. The rest of the people get a phone call a few days before Christmas or an email. It's not so much about the card as it is the fact that you're thinking of people.

We haven't sent out cards on about 6 years. I send out a mass email to update friends and family (done twice a year - June and Dec) and remind them that we are planting a tree in their name. I ask them to drop the 39 cents (or whatever) they would have spent on a stamp for us into a Salvation Army Kettle.

Here's the link:
http://www.arborday.org/join/TICTIM/index.cfm

It's $10 for 10 trees and we are doing our part to help replant trees from the paper waste of cards and wrapping paper. I buy trees for Weddings, anniversaries, Births, etc. With all these forrest fires, some one has to replace the trees. We spend $150 for the the trees at Yule, far less than we would spend on gifts and cards for people who don't really care.

My husband's family thinks it's awful that we don't give gifts. I do buy my 8 year old nephew a book or 2, but I shouldn't have to buy for my in laws and their grown children anymore. My kids get 1 gift each and the joy of spending the day together as a family, since our lives are so busy during the year. I wish I had all the money I spent on toys that broke before noon or vidoe games that were never played with after xmas was over. I could buy a freaking house!

Last year I sent out a whole bunch of cards. This year, I told Brian that I am only sending cards to folks whom I know will send one back or folks I get cards from every year. It may sound humbuggish, but as someone mentioned earlier, I can call or email the ones I don't mail cards to & catch up either way.

I love to get them! I use them to decorate my apartment for christmasolstikwaanukkah....

Here's a question: Nathanial WONT send out cards on his own to his family, should I send out cards to them from Eowyn? I'd get something a little bit kiddish and help her to 'sign' them...or am i just supposed to let him deal with it?

meh. MEH! I say..!

When my oldest daughter was little, she sent cards to her grandparents, my parents, and addressed them to just "Grandpa and Grandma" with their address. They got them.. My mom still has it.

Hell, Himself is never here when the cards go out and when he is, he has no clue who I send them to.

If you want to send them to his family, I say go for it. You can sign his name or not. That's up to you. I sign all my cards differently. Some with both our names, some with the daughters and a select few with the whole fandamily.

Then there are those I sign with just my name.

I even send cards from Her Grace, The Duchess :meow:

I send to my Aunts and Uncles, brothers and sisters, a couple of my cousins who are close to my age, and a few friends. My general rule was if it went a couple of years without receiving from friends, I didn't send another one.

I do try to write a synopsis of the year for my family since I don't see them much.

I've never been a card person.

Since my family is literally spread all over the continent (sister in Canada and parents full-time RV-ing... we never know where they are!!! :-) ), we keep in touch thru email & pre-paid phone cards.

Yes, its nice to receive them, and I definitely appreciate those lovely souls who have the time to do it, who take the time to put some thought into it - I just don't. When I was young-married, we never had the $$ ... now that I'm divorced-with-kids, I never have the time (or the $).

Then, it does depend on the situation, too. Getting a holiday card from someone I love, with even just a quick 'thinking of you' hand-written on it, brightens my day.

Then there's the cynical side of me... if the only time I hear from people is during the holidays - with a mass produced card & hurriedly scrawled signature - it kinda feels like I became a *duty* rather than a friend.

Those who like me for me - don't have to wait til the holidays to let me know I've a special place in their lives. I don't wait to let them know either.

I send Christmas cards out every year but then again I still also send out Thank You cards. However one of the reasons I send cards is because my family is pretty spread out and I include recent pics of the children.

Well, of course, we never sent out cards at my house, growng up. Not really our thing, y'know? So I just never got into the habit. I love getting them of course, greedy cow that I am, but I've just never been entirely comfy sending them.

As for Nathanial? Send 'em in Eowyn's name. His family will know who sent them, and you'll look like a SAINT.

I never do cards really. This year, I am participating in a card exchange through the paintout network. We all had to design a card and send it out to the other 9 who signed up...this is the front of mine...

Merry Christmas!

It was fun, I am hoping to send them all out on Wednesday, or maybe tomorrow. I printed them today...on small ivory cards. I figured I'd go cute n' simple. I thought about doing the troll picking his nose and saying Santa's got a present for ya...but figured not everyone would like that...

OK, rambling, sowwy.

I'm not a card person but I send out a silly amount for Christmas since having children. My family is very spread out so, for some of them, this is our main way to catch up and see pics of our kids. I love sending the pics so I'll send them to just about anyone I have an address for  I string ribbons up on either side of the fireplace and the doorways to the living room and the dining room. They hang straight down. When a holiday card comes in I staple it to the ribbon. Picture cards are my all time favorite and I love holiday letters.

My cards are all set to mail out as soon as I get organized and get my fanny to the post office.

I've made life easy, my return address labels are printed and my Mailing labels are set up in publisher to mail merge into the label document of my choice. Most of my fun is designing a new one every year. This year it's simple and victorian to match the victorian picture on the front of the card of a horse-drawn sleigh ride.

Christmas cards are a tradition in my family. I mail them to 20 different states and four countries. I have family stretched around the world.

I also like getting them very much. A few years ago I bought a special wreath that is made of clothes pins and as each card comes in the mail, it gets clipped to the wreath. I think it adds a personal touch to my home.

I love getting and receiving cards.

Although I lost my address book when I swapped computers with my brother :( so I don't have most of the people I had before.

From Eowyn - depending on how big she is - make a handprint using tempra paints. Let it dry - sign her name beneath it. Then scan it and put it on labels and affix in the cards.

I actually made my own cards when the kids were young - one was Cameron's handprints added to my own simple drawing of an angel. His handprints were the wings. I just photocopied them and made the cards out of construction paper and cut out little frames for the angel on the front. Everyone LOVED those.

Another year I cut four-pane frames out of construction paper for the front and had Cameron help me make waxed paper and crayon stained-glass windows that I set in behind the frames. Great use for worn down and broken crayons and again, friends and family loved 'em.

Hmmm - I think Taylor got left out of the cuteness. Maybe he'll help me this year! LOL
