A teenager charged with driving 142 mph along a four-lane divided highway said he was speeding home so his parents wouldn't be mad at him for being late, police said.
Brandon D. Raap, 16, faces speeding and misdemeanor reckless driving charges and could have his license suspended, police said.
Porter County sheriff's deputies stopped Raap along a rural stretch of U.S. 30 at 12:40 a.m. Saturday after a radar gun clocked his 2004 Subaru Impreza going almost 90 mph faster than the posted 55 mph limit, police said.
It might be the fastest speed ever recorded on the northwestern Indiana county's roads, said Porter County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Emmons.
"Most people's cars won't go that fast," he said.
Raap told police he was late getting home and didn't want his parents to be angry, Deputy John Brubaker said in his report. Raap told Brubaker he didn't have a curfew but is usually home by midnight.
Brubaker didn't arrest Raap, who had a valid Colorado license, but told him to drive straight home and call him within an hour. Raap's mother, Cindy Raap, called instead and Brubaker told her what happened.
The Associated Press left a message with Raap's parents at their home in Valparaiso seeking comment. They declined to comment when contacted by the Post-Tribune of Merrillville.
"Kids sort of have tunnel vision," Emmons said. "They're so concerned with not getting yelled at or grounded, they place other people's lives in jeopardy."
The highway has two lanes in each direction, divided by a median, and traffic is usually light that time of night, Emmons said.

could have his license suspended, police said.:augh:

Brubaker didn't arrest Raap, who had a valid Colorado license, but told him to drive straight home and call him within an hour. Oh yeah, he's going to learn from THAT! Its the bastards like this that don't get hurt...they just take out other people loved ones. He wasn't even responsible enough to make a phone call himself, his mommy had to do it for him. Gods, someone pass me the chlorine!!! The gene pool needs a shock treatment.

He's a kid. Kids do MASSIVELY stupid things. It's very much the way the human brain is wired at that age. Also, small town sherrif? I'm betting this kid's going to have to watch his speed for the rest of his life.

hmmm and I always heard if you are going over 100 let alone 42 more mph on top of that your car would be towed and you would go directly to jail do not collect $200

I really would like to hear what his parents do to get his attention over this one. Course what should have happened and pointed out how serious this is didn't.

I think no car till 21 as in no if and or but no driving allowed. Also, some manditory community service - helping people who could use some assistance around their house or doing chores because they were victims of reckless driving.

I just hope this goes before a judge . . .and the judge uses his/ her brain.

I'd have to ask a friend of mine here on APD, but I can say for certain that when my brother worked in Blue Mound, and at the Dallas Sheriff's Dep't way back in the day, 20 mph over the limit got your arse hauled off to jail - which was why he was surprised at my first ticket not resulting in a jail visit. :-D

On the subject - Uhm, dude! Why didn't you just suck it up and call Mummy and Deddums to tell them you were on the way and running late? Fudge on toast people, am I the only who had a standing arrangement with my parents that if I couldn't make it home at my self appointed time, I had to call and tell them I'd be late, but on the way? Isn't that what cell phones are for in this day and age?

Not wanting to be late to get home... bullshit. bullshit, bullshit, bullshit! Sounds more lik he was just being a teenaged boy and opening it up. If the car he had was capable of going 142 or faster, it's probably not a stock model - he's tweaked it and he had it opened up to see how fast he could go. the only cars I know of capable of purring up to 140+ would be the 12 cylinders - and those are on the HIGH END sports cars, like Ferrari. Not bloodly likely a small town teenager would have one of those.

Not true, I drive a stock Dodge Stratus 2 door, she does 150, yes I do know this for a fact.

as I said - the only cars I *KNOW OF*.

I'm by no means a car expert but I do remember bits and pieces I pick up here and there. I still doubt that he's got a 'normal' car that hasn't been tweaked and I still doubt his story.

Stupid is as stupid does.

I agree with you on this. One does not go 140+ just because you are running late. I don't buy it, either.

Yes Tink, but not to be rude. You're not a small town teenage boy and I think that what Lady Sarah said. and you drive with decorum and dignity i"m sure, opening her up for a 150 rum on the high school track when no one is around. ooo - did I just let out a secret? oops. :shhh:

OK, first of all, the 2004 Subaru Impreza will go that fast, stock, from the showroom. Don't ask. Just know that I know for fact.
That is also the reason why my older daughter was told NO! in no uncertain terms when it came time for her to buy a new car.

This kid should have had his skinny little ass hauled into jail, make Mom and/or Dad come bail him out and, when he got home, grounded from driving until 21.

Oh I'm not saying he wasn't being a shit, I was just saying a stock car will do those sorts of speeds without any changes at all.

I grew up in small town Indiana and we used to drive like idiots all the time, not nearly that fast but I think it is part of youth, that part of your brain that doesn't think that you can hurt yourself or anyone else for that matter.

I know nothing about this kid, but I do know that, in theory, I had of those arrangements with my parents. In actuality, it didn't matter if I called or not, if I was late, my *ss was grass. And I wasn't allowed to have a cell phone until I finally got one when I moved out, because my parents did not think it was necessary, even after getting stuck in the middle of nowhere (and yes, getting yelled at for being late.)

I have no idea if this kid had one or not, or what his policy with his parents was, and he was a complete idiot for going that fast, make no mistake about my opinion on that, but I do know that there was many a time I was well over the speed limit to make sure I got home on time. I doubt this kids story as well, however.

I guess I had really lenient parents then. LOL the only time I got my butt busted for being late is when I didn't call and tell them I was going to be late. When I was a teenager, cell phones were just coming onto the mass market (mom got one for Christmas in '90... I remember this because I sank her car in 91, my Sr year and there was no way in hell that they would have afforded one for me. I didn't get one until years later), but payphones were all around.

I've found that most parents I've met, unless they're total asshats (and I'm not saying yours were, sweetie, I'm just sayin') are understanding when they get a phone call. I don't know what this kid's situation is, but unless this late night was the latest in a long and exhausting string of foul-ups from this kid, I can't imagine his parents wanting him to risk his own life and that of others just to make a time deadline - especially if he didn't have a rigid curfew.

This kid was racing, pure and simple. He was being stupid and the sheriff let him off with a pat in the head. tsk.

Kids are stupid. Teen agers are incredibly stupid because not only are their brains not fully formed physiologically, but they're rebelling against adults - especially parental units AND they have a WMD in their hands in the form of a motor vehicle.

It used to be that male teens were stupider than female teens - they were more prone to risk taking. No more - in fact, teen through mid-20s females have the highest accident claim rate of any demographic group. And let's see - add in mobile phones diverting their already short attention span from driving and ...

shit - I'm staying home!

Nah, my mom was/is incredibly strict. She always said she would rather be too strict than too lenient, but I wish she could have found a happy medium. My mother had to be in control, no matter what, no matter what extenuating circumstances might exist. I got into a car accident about half a year after I got my license. The other woman was speeding, my car died in the middle of an intersection through which I was turning, and I cut it probably a little too close (though, if the car hadn't died, I would have made it.) My mother focused only on the last part of the situation, would not talk to me even when I was in the ER for a sprained back, and still gets pissy 4 years later if it gets mentioned.

wow... that sounds really harsh. Even when I 'sank' the car, neither of my parents got mad at me. they weren't happy about the $ needed to fix it, but they were relieved that I was OK.

I *really* wanna hear this story Sarah..........

ohhh so you wanna hear how *I* earned a Submariner's pin?

Picture it, Arlington, TX, Halloween '91, I'm 17 and have a Danish Foreign Exchange Student in the car with me... in fact, we're going to a Halloween party for the exchange students. It'd been raining all week, particularly HARD this one Saturday. We both got to the party OK, and I went home halfway through the party to change clothes. Now, I'm in Mom's Mercury Cougar at the time, not Dad's truck (might've had a different outcome if I had been, but mom had the phone and as we were going to be out late, she wanted us to have a means of calling her if we got into trouble... oooooooo boy is she psychic??)

Anyway, long about 130, 2ish in the morning after we both decided it was time to go home, it's not raining - at.all. Roads are wet, but it's not raining. So, I'm on my way home and we're in the home stretch, house is just about 5 minutes and I pull up to the Infamous Ditch of Bottoming Out... otherwise known as a drainage ditch in front of the elementary school. This would be before the city decided to blacktop it and put a water depth gauge in place...

So, anyways, being 17 and invincible, I decide to be cautious about going through the ditch - knowing full well that if I zipped through there, I'd run the great risk of hydroplaning. Easing down to about 5 mph, I inched into the water - and got stuck. Seems the water was a LOT higher than I thought. Come to find out, the water was about 4 ft deep. We were floating just barely off of the pavement. Several larger cars zoomed through the water and we went a-rockin'. Anja, our exchange student, finally felt the water rising in the floorboard of the car.

Luckily I'd called Dad after the car stalled and he was on his way trying to find a way around the flooding. Two very nice boys (probably my age at the time) pulled into a side street, hiked up their pants/shorts and waded out to keep an eye on the both of us. We wound up crawling out of the window and Dad and I pushed the car out of the ditch to a side street to deal with later that morning.

Anja and I slept bundled in blankets only to get out of the shower the next morning to find the ceiling in my room falling in. One of our dogs had an epileptic fit later on in the day and come to find out, not only did I sink the car, I got water into the oil pan and into the gasoline lines.

When I do things, I do them RIGHT by god!!

I had a standing curfew of 10 on school nights, midnight on the weekends, and if for some reason you were running a few minutes late, to call and let them know. In return for following this simple rule, I could get curfew stretched for special occasions. Even at fifteen, I didn't think this was a terribly onerous rule, since I did have to get up for school!
I'd think maybe the kids' parents were really strict, but then they'd be less likely to be the type to let a kid HAVE a car like that.
