Story Highlights• Pilots on American Airlines Boeing 777 heard scratching in cockpit ceiling
• Tokyo to Dallas flight made emergency landing in Honolulu
• Stowaway squirrel trapped and removed
• The 202 human passengers got hotel rooms, new flights

HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) -- An American Airlines flight made an unscheduled landing after pilots heard something skittering about in the wire-laden space over the cockpit.

The airline blamed the emergency landing of the Tokyo-Dallas flight with 202 passengers on a stowaway squirrel.

"You do not want a varmint up in the wiring areas and what-have-you on an airplane. You don't want anything up there," said John Hotard, spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline.

He said pilots feared the animal would chew through wiring or cause other problems.

"So, as a precaution, we diverted," Hotard said.

Once on the ground late Friday, the Boeing 777's human passengers were put up in hotel rooms and later rebooked on other flights.

State and federal agriculture and wildlife officials boarded the plane, set traps and captured the eastern gray squirrel.

Hotard said the plane had flown to Tokyo from New York before the Dallas flight. (oops! I knew I should have secured him better.)
Honolulu, however, proved to be the squirrel's final destination. Fearing it might have been carrying rabies, authorities had the rodent killed.

*giggle*

I personally would have loved to have been on that flight. An unexpected stop in Hawaii? Fine by me! :-D

I agree! Hotel, beach, Hawaii...sounds like a good deal to me. Although, my favorite part of that is the guy actually used the word "varmint." That made me giggle for a couple minutes in a totally empty room.

can the people from Honolulu cam to my house and trap a Raccoon?
She (yes, it is a pregnant coon therfore I believe it to be female) tore into my roof bending the metal stip at the the edge to 90 degree angle . . . I called a company and they checked the roof and found where she was trying to build a nest . . .no sign of having given birth yet . . .the put a cover on the opening that would allow her to get out but not back in . . .
I spent two nights ago listening to her trying to get in from that opening and the last two of her trying to make a new opening . . .she has torn off three shingles for sure for the new opening because they were on my yard this morning . . . last night I kept going out and throwing ice cubes in her general vacinity (this would cover the hours of 2am -4 am) I didn't want to hit her just scare her off. Today my lawn guy is cutting down the tree she is using to get to the house - no way to just trim back. (Yes, I will plant something in the spring to replace. - just not so close to my house)
So please can the people come catch her for me? I need sleep badly - three nights without and nephew/ niece joint b-day party on Sat at Chuck E Cheese - so sleep or bail money.

Those squirrels look cute, but they're just rats with a fuzzy tail!

Rats can be cute too - if they're in a cage at a pet store, not my home!

Imagine trying to explain that to ground control!!!

Although, my younger brother nearly wrecked his truck and killed us both when a mouse climbed up the front of the drivers seat between his legs while we were driving down the road. I suppose it got in there while we were moving some old stuff from the barn. After the truck came to a skidding halt, I climbed through the window because the door wouldn't open fast enough.

I can understand the issues with having a squirrel climbing through my carryons.

Emrld..
We had some trouble with raccoons at my shop at Fair and they were getting into the flowers that we needed to make garlands so my boss got the brilliant idea to get a live trap and set the damn thing on a saterday night. So we put a can of tuna in the trap and went to bed. The damn thing caught one not an hour after we were snuggeld down. So mum, boss and I went down to check it out. We had caught a baby and mommy and the crew was not going any where. In fact momma raccoon scared the crap outta three grown women, she tried to get us. So baby hollerd all night long! so the moral to this story is when trapping raccoons get a live trap and go away for the night!

In fact if you get ahold of the local animal control they will bring a live trap over and set it and make the nasty little critter away. Then there is this stuff at Home Depot that is pest repellant , its a powder that you sprinkle around and it keeps the critters away really well!

good luck!
