....make sure the batteries in your smoke detectors are present and working.
On Wednesday a horrible tragedy happened in the Bronx near where I grew up. I won't go in to details because it has been all over the news, but 8 children died as did one mother.
This could have been prevented, in part, if there had been working smoke detectors. So, please, check yours. Make sure they work.
A few other things mentioned in the news concerning this fire.... check the cords and wires on electric heaters. This is how the fire started. A faulty cord. Keep clothing and bedding away from the heater when it is on. Remember to unplug the heater when you are not using it. I'm guilty on this... never do it.
Another fire safety must: CLOSE THE DOOR. If a fire breaks out, leave the room (if you can) and shut the door behind you. This prevents the fire from spreading faster.
And remember to call 911 immediately. Time is of the essence. Do not try to put the fire out yourself. If you have a fire extinguisher use it, but AFTER you call for help.
A combination of all of the above, resulted in this horrible event that has devastated a family and a community. I cried as I read the news. It is that heartbreaking. So many loved ones lost.
Please, please be safe. And remember to hug those you love.....
