I doubt many of you are aware, but my little brother has diabetes. My father recently sent out the following notice. Unfortunately *I* will be unable to walk with them since my vacation was scheduled before I knew of the event. I'm trying to do my part by making people aware and hopefully rounding up a few more sponsers. If you can find it in your heart (and pocketbook) to be a sponser we would be very grateful.

JDRF WALK TO CURE DIABETES

Dear Friends:

Only July 2, 1998, at an annual school physical, our son Tom was diagnosed with Type 1-Juvenile Diabetes. Tom was 15 years old and entering 10th grade in September. Being diagnosed with diabetes as a teen is one of the hardest times because their bodies and minds are already being challenged with issues that neither family nor physicians can control. When Tom was diagnosed we had no clue he was ill because his pancreas was still functioning and producing some insulin. This is what is called the "honeymoon" stage. He knew he had diabetes, but felt healthy and strong. Tom and the family went thru all the normal stages after his diagnosis: surprise, denial, anger, fear, and so many more.

Tom has definitely had his ups and downs. Overall, when we consider everything that he has on his plate, we are truly amazed, and ever so proud, of how well he is managing his diabetes. Tom checks his blood sugar at least three times per day, and gives himself insulin injections before each meal.

I could go on forever about how diabetes has impacted Tom's life, but the bottom line is that diabetes affects 120 to 140 million people worldwide. On average, diabetes will shorten the lifespan by 15 years. So, we need a cure and we need one SOON!

This is where you can help. On September 21, 2003, in Carlsbad, California, Tom's Team will participate in our first annual WALK TO FIND A CURE, organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). If you would like to be a sponsor for Tom's Team, please make checks payable to JDRF and return to us. All donations are tax-deductible. Send your contributions to:

***removed address now that walk is complete***

Thank you,

Well, this is all Dad's show. I did send him information this morning on how to join the sponsor website on diabetes.org

If he signs up, I'll post that link here.

Thanks for the suggestion :)
