I'm literally whining that I want this while I sit here with crumpies... That would be sweet...

“I certainly can understand the benefits of taking these kinds of medications, but for most women menstruation is a normal life event, not a medical condition. Why medicate away a normal life event if we’re not sure of the long-term effects?” said Ms. Elson, who researches medical sociology.
That right there says it all.
I can understand taking the pill to regulate the cycle or for real honest reasons... but just to get rid of the cycle completely? Take it from someone who doesn't have one - it's nice once in a while not to have to worry about it, but it does make me wonder if there will ever be child-bearing in my future. If we don't know the long term risks, is it really worth it?

*Gah!* In the same boat as you Kate, only I have the emotional ups and downs going on right now. Joy.
Ya know, I would be all for not having a period again, but other than for surgical issues, I can't really see how that would be too very healthy.
No research or anything to back up that above statement, just a feeling that if your body was ment to do something as natural as a period - it just ought to do it.

Yep. I am on Depo for that very reason. I decided to get BC to regulate, but decided if I was going to be on it, I was going to get the one that made it go away. It is my wish that it goes away for good. I don't want children. I almost hope it has that effect.

I agree. I'm just wishing I didn't have a cycle at all right now is all. I have no idea what the long term effects of not having a cycle at all would be. I don't think I want to know.
But if it were told that there are absolutely no side effects ever, I'd be first on line.
As far as I'm concerned, they can take all my plumbing and just throw it away. It serves no purpose other than housing babies and cancer. I'd much rather have neither.
Yep, I would volunteer for a study on this one immediately. I don't want kids, I'm in my early 40's and I am not going to change my mind. I would love for my period to go away forever!

I am also on Depo, but it wasnt to make the cycle go away, just the pain. I started BC to make the cramps ease. They used to be so bad that I had to call in sick and just lay in bed wishing it would go away. The Depo has had that incredible effect

Same here. I shouldn't have said regulate, I wasn't thinking clearly. It was because mine were so heavy, the cramps were debilitating, and the mood swings atrocious. I love Depo.

I just think it's a little scary how few women have researched their birth control to begin with. Even now, women are not having periods on their BC. They have hormone withdrawal bleeding designed to mimic periods.
Originally the pill didn't allow for the withdrawal bleeding and creators thought that might worry women too much so they put in an inactive week.
I had one girl venting that if you didn't have a period you would DIE OMG!

Add into that, if you ask your doctor, most BC pills can have you just skip the last row and not have a period because of the fact it's not menstruation. You're not doing something any worse than taking the pill in the first place, since it's designed to make you not release eggs (so essentially, you have no cycle). This is just a glorified version of skipping the last row.

Ditto. I will never have children, do not want them. I have no desire to have my monthlys, either. In fact, as I type this, there's a kid in the office *screaming* it's fucking head off... I want to go strangle it and get it out of it's misery. There's a reason I chose not to procreate.

We had discussed that in a previous topic a while ago...I think it had to do with Seasonal the "four-periods-a-year" pill. Anyway, there were studies done on certain cultures from different places in the world (South America, the Congo, Japan) where women had fewer menstrual cycles and were much healthier.
Personally I skip periods all the time for different reasons. The only trick is to get the NP to give me a few extra packs a year, so I don't run out before my annual re-prescription date.
