Egypt bans female genital cutting
Egypt’s health ministry announced a total ban on female genital cutting after many years of dialogue about the practice. The decision came after a 12-year-old girl died in late June undergoing a female circumcision, in which all or part of the clitoris is removed . Religious figures back the Egyptian government’s decision. A 2003 UNICEF survey found that 97 percent of married women in Egypt have undergone the procedure. With the implementation of the new law, doctors and others who perform the procedure risk criminal prosecution.
It is a good start but if it is familys who are doing this because of religion and tradition will they enforce it? Or will it be like "honor" killings that are let slide....
it is illigal here in the USA but still is done.
