This week a massive fire destroyed (http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/08/10/fire_displaces_women_living_at_secret_shelter/) the only domestic violence shelter (http://www.elizabethstonehouse.org/) in the state of Massachusetts that allows mothers to stay with their children."It's a big loss," said Toni Troop, spokeswoman for Jane Doe Inc., an umbrella group of 60 social service providers including the Stone House. "The loss of any single bed, never mind an entire program, in Massachusetts just diminished the availability of emergency shelters. There are already as many people turned away as are served on any given day." Troop said the Stone House is one of 32 emergency shelters for domestic violence victims in the state, and that there is no fast way to replace the beds lost by the fire. Officials estimated the damage at $175,000.

But for Erika, who had just set up the playpen for her infant and was hauling the last of her goods into the apartment Tuesday afternoon when the building started to burn, the loss was impossible to quantify.

"I'm just devastated," said Erika, 34. "I just know my life was starting over . . . [now] I have nothing -- nothing, nothing, nothing."

This must be a terrible time for the women who had been living at the shelter. They're still waiting to hear if their insurance is going to cover their losses. If you want to help out, the center is seeking donations. Here's where you can send a check:The Elizabeth Stone House

P.O. Box 300039

Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

info@elizabethstone.org*edit* There are indeed other women's shelters in MA that allow Mother's and Children to stay together. I just gathered the correction.

Can we do anything for them? I'm sure there must be baby goods hereabouts we don't need but that they might.

I'm leary of sending a check through the mail (I know, I'm a freak about the postal service *eyeroll*) so if anyone hears about a paypal account being set up for this, please post info or send me a PM, and I will send what I can. I just can't even begin to imagine what these poor women feel right now, so please, let me know when I can help.

There's an online donation link on this link:

http://www.elizabethstonehouse.org/how.htm

I'm not sure if it's paypal and I'd rather donate goods than moeny, goods have a tendancy to be used for the purpose they were given for. I'm trying to contact an official to see if we can donate goods as well, but from what I have read and seen they don't really have anywhere to put suf right now as the facility was pretty much gutted.

That's weird.....I live here in MA (30 minutes away from JP depending on traffic) and we haven't heard anything about it. And my mom watches the news pretty much every night. You'd figure something like this would have at least been mentioned on the local news broadcasts.

Either way that totally sucks.

Jayde, can you get us any more info? My sister prolly has stuff she can donate-- if they have somewhere to put it.

Bonnie: send a money order or something like that. More secure, but still cash.

Unfortunately there isn't much more info I can get other than what Isa has already posted. JP is one of the outskirt sections of Boston (and I stay away from Boston lol).

I think Isa has already tried e-mailing or contacting them. I am going to make a post to Local 24's Yahoo group. Maybe someone else knows more.....
