View Full Version : WoW, a little late...

I know I posted a message before about me finally getting involved with Warcraft, well, it's happened. I created my account this morning and the game was downloading when I left.
I've read a bit about the different characters, but I don't know what's good to choose. I'm really liking the mage, but I don't know... I want to be able to withstand an attack on a battleground.
I'd love to be able to wear strong armor and carry lots of swords, but are there any girly characters out there that can do that?
Any input is welcome. Oh, and I'm Scottish Wench in (what's it called, a realm? I'm so WoW stupid still) Hydraxis (sp?).
So, for now, I'm on my free trial 10 days and if I like it, I'll be going out to buy it. I can't imagine not liking it though...

I'm a WoW player on Skullcrusher. An undead mage. There is no single good character to choose. It depends on your style and choices. Now me, I like being able to cause damage from the back. Mages are great for me for that reason. Some enjoy being in the middle. They are warriors and Paladins. Even though I am a "clothy" I can handle being attacked. Priests die quick. Paladins take forever to die. Hunters are good for being in the back and they can be in the middle too to an extent. Go ahead and PM me with any questions :-)

It is never too late to WoW!!!
I have my characters on Cenarius, horde of course. You can definitely play any class you want, the race you pick though has to have that class available. So experiment! Flip through creation and find out what different classes make.
I can see you happily playing a rogue or paladin. Lots of sharp pointies to poke with! Though you may want to look at hunters. (Guns to shoot and fun pets to have follow you around.)
Drop me a call anytime if you want to explore some with me!

Awsome! Now, I hear that I can't just go find everyone that I know and go exploring with them like on SL... They have to be of the same server or realm or something?
And I'm really leaning toard mage, I'd like to be able to cause damage from the back. The other people I will be playing with mostly are crazy bezerkers! lol I'm more calculated so I think that'd be better...
And Horde? I'm gonna be Alliance! Noooo!!! lol I'll fight ya... me at my level 1... lol

Welcome to the fold! :cheer:
When I started, I made characters of almost every race and class all over the place. After awhile, I narrowed it down to the 4-5 that I play on a regular basis.
My servers are:
Twisting Nether (RP-PVP) - Horde (main characters, played the most)
Moon Guard (RP) - Alliance/Horde
Maelstrom (RP-PVP) - Alliance
Sentinals (RP) - Alliance
The munchkin also has characters on the above realms, as well as playing some of mine.
DonaNina is on Twisting Nether, too. Come join us there, you'll be in good company! Check out the website: http://www.wow-tng.org/index.php

And as an aside, you might be interested in a song called Skullcrusher Mountain by a guy named Jonathan Coulton. Cute song... :-D

Those are both servers. My 10 Alliance toons are on Argent Dawn and my horde are on ..... dang it, have to get back to you on that one. I forgot. *sigh*
Mages, I've been told are hard to level. Warlocks and hunters are easier to level for me. Distance with a pet to keep the bad guy's attention. Warlocks are pretty powerful in WoW I think...(ducks the bats and bricks from others players). Priests as a first character, I wouldn't really suggest it. They are harder for me to level than mages though I have a 70 NE priest. I had to find and adopt a fighter and level with him. He killed the eps and I healed his butt.

I agree with you about the priests and warlocks. I started on a 'lock, but because my guild was so short of priests, I created one. (See below.) I absolutely fell in love with the class, with herbalism and alchemy as my professions. I now play 4 priests - undead, dranei, night elf and human. It is sometimes hard to solo, but I always get invites for groups and lots of prsents! People think that bribing me will get them better healing. They're right. :shhh:

The names in our sigs are character names. Each one is different.
I have:
Gráina ní Mháile - undead
Morrigaine ní Mháile - undead
Elanya - Dranei
Sitha - Human
and several others I can't remember the names of right now.
I play on RP servers and, yes, we will report non-RP names and RP griefers. /shrug

So, right now I'm all loaded up. Ready to go. I'm at the screen that says: Create Your Accout and Play World of Warcraft
I originally started it as Scottish Wench, but now I hate that. I want something better... Something Mage-ish because I think that's how I'm starting.
Aw, it took me 4 years to come up with a faire name... Drat...

Never to late for WoW!
I see no one has mentioned the versatility of a well played Druid. I will start with my selling point to you...Druids can be back stabbing kitty cats. OR. We can be big tough bears. We can blow things up, not as well as a mage or lock, but respectably. We can heal ourselves when we get into trouble. We can take the place of a priest in many situations in a group. We can turn into a seal and out swim anything. Wanna fly like a bird? At level 70 we can do that, too. And last but not least, we can turn into a cute spotted cat that can run pretty fast to get away from the baddies.

*grin* Laughingcrow is a lvl 70 feral druid. Black is a 70 NE priest and shadow is a 70 human warlock.
I didn't suggest druid because it's not exactly a simple class to start with. However, I do love the flexability of a druid. Now if I can only save up the 5000 gold for the epic flight form. *sigh* I'm always broke

In addition, since I lack playing time I don't have quite so much to keep up with in reference to gear and toys. When I was raiding hard core it was frowned upon to want to switch between classes.
Now in my old age I am happy to be included on an alt Kara run :)

As to raids, it still is. My lock was my primary but then everyone seemed to have a lock and to get into raids I started black. The same with laughing. I took about a month or two off hard core runs and now I am seriously undergeared for the new instances on all three. WAY behind the 8 ball here.

Cricket,
My recommendations are these:
1. Pick an account name you will always have. One example would be like your initials and last 4 of SS number. Something you never tell ANYONE else!
2. Pick a server with someone you know (from here or in RL) playing on it. Though those people that frequently raid may not have time to play with you lots.
3. Try out different races and classes to find one that suits you.
4. Have fun with it.
Some basic notes:
Servers are where you choose to create your characters. They only hold about 3-5k people tops. Thus you do not have the huge lag / disconnects like SL had.
PvP is Player Versus Player combat. You can either play on a server that always allows characters to fight each other (hence a PvP Server) OR you can pick a non PvP server and only battle other PLAYERS when so inclined.
PvE is Player versus Environment. You battle game run monsters / humanoids for experience.
NPC is a Non Player Character. A monster or humanoid or quest giver run by the game.
RP is Role Playing. Feel the urge to be in character? Try out a RP Server.
EPeen is the 'yardstick' measuring of gamers when they boast. E (electronic) peen (pen!s).
Different servers use different terms so mentioning them here will just start a big "well we call it Arena, not BG" or whatever. ;) Have fun with it hon!

Never too late... Heck, I've been playing for 2 years and I'm only a lowly levl 51 Priest. (yeah, I said it.. PRIEST... I hold my own thank you very much and I get whispered daily to go run instances from guilds full of Mages, 'Locks and Warriors..... And I don't die a lot.... just often enough to remind the DPS machines and warriors to take the agro off of me!)
I like standing in the back and healing (Yep, Holy Spec... had her Shadow Spec for a while... but that's better for Horde side IMHO) and I still get good drops. I <3 my guild (It's Blue Sun and our Horde side sister guild is Browncoats....) and we aren't a raiding guild.. It's not about how much you play but how well you play and I'd rather be with a bunch of lvl 40's who are good at what they do, than a bunch of 70's who bicker, fight, ninja loot, and whimper every time they get a scratch. (However, YMMV)
I also have a Lvl 11 human 'Lock, a Lvl 6 Deranei Hunter, A Lvl 10 Blood elf Hunter and a Lvl 22 Undead Priest. Hmmm... maybe that's why I'm only 51.... ;)

Yeah, I don't do instances very often, but when I do I usually wind up healing. I was a tank for the first time the other day when our tank suddenly had to leave. It was.... interesting. I prefer standing in the back using spells, but being able to maul things is nice once in while. I'm in the guild with Uni and I love it. It amuses me greatly when here fiance runs us through an instance. He's a high level pally and watching him run around collecting all the beasts into a roiling mass of gnashing madness just brings a smile to my face. lol

create an alt with the same realm and faction and mail the gold and stuff to your new alt. you can then delete the character without loss. It is a common practice when you need more bank storage space. You create an alt and use that one's bank space as well.
