Their little bodies were carried into the hospital, where medical staff fought to breathe life into them.
A set of 3-year-old twins, a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old were so badly burned that a strong smell of smoke lingered long after the children were pronounced dead at Bethesda North Hospital Friday night.
Minutes earlier police had found the children’s father, Michel Veillette, 34, in his front yard in the 4500 block of Brackenview Court; the second story of his $436,000 home was engulfed in flames.
Later Saturday, Veillette would be charged with five counts of murder. Michel Veillette was listed in critical but stable condition at University Hospital. A guard stood outside his door.
Suffering from stab wounds, Veillette told police that his children were still in the house when they arrived just after 10 p.m.
So was his wife.
Nadya Ferrrari-Veillette also had been stabbed. Police said the children, Marguerite, Vincent and twins Jacob and Mia, were not.
Late Saturday, police and firefighters had no clear explanation of what happened and why.
Police say the man deliberately killed his wife and children. Four charges of aggravated murder – one count for each of the children – and a charge of murder for their mother were filed against Veillette Saturday. He also was charged with aggravated arson. If Veillette survives, he could face the death penalty
