A New Zealand man has been charged with driving a lawn mower while drunk, police said Tuesday.

Richard Gunn, 52, was driving the lawn mower down a street in the northern New Zealand town of Dargaville late Monday evening when police stopped him, police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said.

Gunn's breath alcohol level was at more than twice the legal limit for drivers, police said, and he previously had lost his driver's license.

Gunn said he has been using the lawn mower to get around town since losing his license.

"I thought I was safe," he told TV One News.

Even bicycles went faster than the lawn mower's 5 mph, he said. "I've watched them go past me."

Gunn was scheduled to appear in court later this week on charges of careless driving, driving while disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol. He faces a potential prison term if convicted.

Police impounded the lawn mower for 28 days.

Now, I have a serious question about those scooters that you see the elderly or the handicapped using.

Is there a law about driving under the influence for those here in the states?

I ask because there have been many times at different faires where the owner has had a bit too much ale, mead, whathaveyou and I've come close to being run over. :unamused:

Come close? Ha! I got hit and had my overskirt torn at Tux. The woman driving was completely loaded and ran into the back of me. I was all pirate-like and had on a black skirt that draped the floor a bit behind me when I walked. Not too much, if I could handle it. But she ran into me with it and then backed up. I realized I was stuck in her front wheel before she started turning then she pulled my skirt and ripped it. it was good that I had been wearing 2 skirts that day, she darn near pulled the black one off. She then blamed me for getting in her way. I was pretty loaded myself so instead of getting all indignant I gave her a "whatever lady" and went back to the friends of faire garden for a small adjustment.

There shoudl be laws about operating those things.

I believe you can get a DWI while operating almost any vehicle.

You can get one in NJ for being drunk on a bicycle.

I can't imagine you would get very far drunk on a bicycle, but it'd be funny to see.

You don't need to be wobbly and falling down drunk to be drunk on a bike.

Trust me on this one.

And it was funny at the time but, not looking back on it.
