View Full Version : Let's Get Moving!!

Ok ladies, here’s the thing. I have GOT to get moving again. I’m not talking about a New Year’s resolution. I’m talking about a way of life. About 7 or 8 years ago I made a lifestyle change, where I started eating better and moving more. I lost about 30 lbs. and kept them off for 2-3 years. Then I took a new job, which ended up being the job from hell. Many of you are aware of that situation, I won’t go into it again here. But, the new job consumed me (not in a good way) and my lifestyle changed back to eating poorly and being sedentary. I gained back what I had lost, plus more in the 5 years I had that job.
Now I have a fabulous new job and my life is back on track. So, now that the emotional me is back to where I was and better, it’s time to get the physical me back as well. I’ve joined the local Y and have been attending water aerobics classes for two weeks now, and I’m loving it, and feeling even better!! I’ve been watching what I eat for that same two weeks, and I’m happy to report things are going well. (and I’ve lost 7 lbs. to boot!)
So, is anyone else out there trying to make the same changes? If so, what are you doing to get moving? Are you following any specific eating plans to help you? And is there any interest in having a thread to support each other and keep each other motivated?

I started eating better last week, lower calories and fat, smaller portion sizes, but not sitting and counting/weighing everything. I bought myself a Weight Watchers cookbook too, for when I feel like cooking something and also have the time. This week, I start doing Tae-Bo everyday for half an hour. I've had enough of being fat. I've had enough of the issues that go along with it. And mostly, I want to feel pretty again. I haven't felt pretty in ages.

I've been going for two weeks too! I restarted doing Weight watchers which I did last year between feb and june and lost almost thirty lbs on. So far as of weighing myself today I've lost four pounds :-D

My boyfriend and I have started geocaching on weekends which requires a lot of walking and hiking. I also joined a gym near by that doesn't require a contract, it's called Snap 24/7 Fitness. I go there and walk on the treadmills to make up for all the hiking we can't do with geocaching lately since it's so cold. The first week on WW I didn't loose a lot at all, but this week I lost three pounds, so if I can keep up with an average of two pounds a week by the time faire starts I should have lost around 40 pounds!

I joined Sparkpeople (http://www.sparkpeople.com) before the holidays and have managed to hold my own with my weight over the toughest time of year for me. I think the community aspect of it is what is helping most; I'm fairly active as a poster in some forums over there and it's really been great - everyone is very supportive and welcoming. It's sort of Weight Watchers meets MySpace (if you do join, my name is Gwenneh there, feel free to add!)

Apart from that I've joined a gym and that's been good too, though I have to get my knee problem sorted soon before I can do much else.

Ladies, I'm so glad to hear from you!! Congratulations on all of the success that you have met with already, and here's to your continued success.
Let's try to support each other in this endeavor. Maybe reporting our progress here once a week or so, and sharing tips that seem to be working, or not working.
I really think the idea of a support system is key to what we are trying to accomplish.

Emma, I haven't joined Weight Watchers, but I am doing the "points" thing, as I have some friends that have provided me with the information to utilize this system. I really think it's been a big key to my success. 40 lbs by Faire season?!? That's fantastic! Sounds like a great goal to me! And it sounds like a great reason to shop for new garb!!

(BTW, I lost another 2 lbs. last week!! Bringing my total for the 2 weeks to 8lbs lost!)

Guinevere, I'm sorry to hear about your knee. Did you do something specific to injure it? If your gym offers any type of water aerobics, I highly recommend it for anyone with joint or back pain. I've had back problems for years, and just in the past two weeks I've experienced very little discomfort. I think the exercise is helping to stretch and build my core muscles, which is important to me.

Keep the stories coming girls, this is wonderful news!

I have no clue what I did to my knee. I have the feeling that it's a riding injury from long ago that is just now starting to cause chronic pain. I went to my useless-as-tits-on-a-frog GP while I was in London this week and she said it's either torn cartilage or arthritis and didn't give me any other suggestion apart from "take some ibuprofin" and oh, by the way, you need to lose some weight.

Thanks. you were f*ck-all help on that score too, lady. She doesn't seem to believe that I *do* eat right (mostly) and I do exercise regularly (again, mostly). It's hard not to when you have horses!

sorry, very frustrated with my GP at the moment and am seriously considering American health care option - using my health insurance...

I think there must be something in the air, as I know of several of us that are rather disenfranchised with our doctors right now. I don't know if they are just too busy, or think we are stupid, or what, but I'm getting tired of it!!
In about 20 minutes I get to go back to my doctor for the third blood draw since Thanksgiving. The first one was a routine checkup. Then they told me that some of my levels were high so they wanted to recheck them, so I went back in mid Dec. I heard nothing from them by the new year, so I thought everything was fine. Nope, got another call on Jan. 3 stating they wanted me to come in for another round. Not ONCE have they asked me to come in and talk with the Dr. about what the tests are showing or what they mean.
So, I've arranged a seperate appointment today, in order to get some refills on scrips. And when I have the Doc in the room I'm just gonna say, "What the hell is going on with all of these blood tests?!?" Are they trained to keep us in the dark like this, or what?

Last Spring I started taking bellydance, and in the fall added Fit or Bust (which is sort of bellydance aerobics, plus some moral & nutritional support) to my schedule. Unfortunately, I did so much traveling from October to December that I didn't make it to dance or FoB for most of October, all of November, and all of December. I'm back on track now, and to my great surprise, when I started FoB again on Saturday, not only did I not gain anything during the holidays, I lost 4 lbs ::yay::.

My goal is 25 lbs by Scarby opening, and another 25 by the time I go to my nephew's wedding in June, then another 30 by my birthday in October. That should take me down to about a size 12 or 14, which will make me happy.

The biggest eating change I'm making is having a protein shake for breakfast and not snacking on crap during the day. Evenings that I dance (M, W, Th) I try to do a shake for dinner... usually about 1/2 of one before I go dance, so I'm not dancing on a full tummy. I make my own shakes using soy milk, whey powder, frozen fruit, and a raw egg. It's worked for me so far, and even when I don't eat very well the rest of the time, I'm still dropping inches (even if I'm not dropping very many pounds sometimes).

I am too! I am trying to watch what I eat better, snack less. Starting tomorrow, I'm going back to the gym at work. My pirate is going to try going to the gym too. My biggest motivation right now is to look gorgeous when I get my wedding dress.
I'm hoping to drop 30-40 lbs by the time Kentucky Renfaire starts up.

My boyfriend and I have started geocaching on weekends which requires a lot of walking and hiking.

I do letterboxing on weekends when it's warmer, as well, or when I'm travelling (I'm going to Austin next week). I've started pilates and plan to add on other exercises once my core muscles are strong enough to handle it. I have to be very careful not to overdo things, as my fibromyalgia likes to kick my butt if I'm not watching out for it. I'm hoping to start going back to my acupuncturist and find a new massage therapist to keep my muscles from seizing up.

I was doing good for a while, doing weight watchers and excercising, but I started finding the meetings a bit condecending and I stopped going. Things in my life sorta turned upside down and I stopped exercising. Then, I got a car, and became quite comfortable driving to the store when I would normally walk. It was gradual, but eventually, that 25 pounds I lost became 20 pounds, then 15, then 10.

I noticed the other day that my belt was in the wrong hole. That morning, I threw away the bottle of coke and the iced tea mix and switched back to diet soda and water and started taking walks at lunchtime to get some exercise. I'm going to start snacking better (An apple instead of a bag of chips gives you more energy anyway, and I LIKE apples, so why did I go for the chips)

So, I'm with ya girl! And, I'm even going to start those belly dancing videos again! They were fun and I learned some pretty cool moves!

Yep, I gained back 10lbs of the 50 I lost four years ago, when I moved out of my parent's house. Now I'm losing it again, using the Atkins diet. It's been going very well for me, so far. I have more energy, I've lost the 10lbs I gained, and now I'm trying to lose another 10 so I can be 120lbs. I've never been thin before, but I'd like to be a size 6.

I've lost over 20lbs since end of faire just by changing how I eat, watching my fat and calorie intake but not calling it a 'diet', rather looking at it as it just being the way I eat now. Why did you go for chips instead of apples? Maybe sometimes you just wanted something on the salty end. Have you tried Baked Lays? I substitute them for regular chips if I feel I want some. Something important....portioning. Never sit down with the bag! Always portion out a bit into a small bowl or something and put the bag away. After meals, brush your teeth, you're less likely to want to eat more.

I also got a dance mat for my PlayStation2, I may look like an idiot but I love bouncing around to Dance Revolution (especially since I use it in my family room which is on a concrete floor and nothing but me wobbles *rotfl*)

I am doing the same thing, not calling it a "diet", just making it the way I eat now. So far, not so bad. I don't know if I am losing weight or not yet, cause I refuse to weigh myself. When my clothes start fitting looser, I'll know I'm losing weight, is my theory.

I wish I had a playstation 2 and DDR. It's the only videogame I actually want to play! Kinda makes me wish they could figure out how to make it for a Wii.

Ask and you shall receive (http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Revolution-Hottest-Party-Bundle/dp/B000PMGN2M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1200961215&sr=8-1)!

It can matter which game you get though, some are better for beginners than others so read descriptions (and I found reading reviews very helpful) carefully.

This is the dance pad (http://www.redoctane.com/ignitionpadv3.html) I got. It's much better than the older ones (they've really improved them, better made and more sensitive for better play) and it's multi-platform.

I kind of started out with the refusing to weigh myself theory. 2 days in I chucked it and got on the scale for a reality check. I'm really glad I did, because I certainly saw results sooner that way, giving me more motivation to continue what I'm doing.

I tried the DDR thing for a while a few years back. It was great fun, especially when playing with someone else. But I found the stress and strain it put on my back from my "top area" bouncing around did more damage than good. It's definitely not a "low impact" exercise, if done with some intensity!

I recently got the DDR game for my PS2, I love it. I got some used games at our local Gamestop for a good price and a Pelican brand Dance universal dance mat for $19.99 brand new. It works on my PS2, Wii, gamecube and Xbox. I've been using it every day for the 3 weeks for at least 1/2 hour a day and already noticed a difference.

I started going to the gym offered by my work last spring. Unfortunately with the cold weather I stopped going for 2 months and regained the 15 pounds I had lost.

Two weeks ago I started back with a clever plan to avoid walking in the cold. I have already dropped 5 pounds just from those few days I have gone. It simply proves to me that I am eating right (carrots, celery & hummus not chips or cookies as snacks) but just need to move.

My goal is a size lower than what I currently am by May and then another size lower by August if doable or December if not. I have an awesome reward in may if I hit it. Must keep going to the gym!

If I get down to my May goal size of 12 then I am ordering a May Faire Moon Corset! In Strathspey Ancient tartan! haha (Yeah, find that one for me Yso. ;) )

If I can get to a size 10 by December and maintain it until August then I am going to buy a Moresca mini bodice, skirt and belt. Since at that size I wont mind showing off the belly a bit.

I do have to note though, that my gym at work is only $35 for the length of time I am employed. Thats it, one payment made last year. So all the cash I am saving on gym fees is allocated in my head to pretties!

I started last summer as a size 16 womens and now I can fit into a size 14. Of course I have yet to buy new things as a whole new work wardrobe would be way to expensive! Plus my slacks still fit fine. Some are looser but not falling off yet darn it!

Hitting my ultimate goal by May would be awesome but I need to be able to maintain as well. Which is the biggest commitment. I think that just 3 days a week at the gym may be enough but we shall see. So far I am going five days a week, job depending of course. Spending 15 min on cardio on the recumbent bike and 20 min on the weight machines making muscles!

I'm completely out of money until next month, so I've stopped working with my trainer. It pisses me off endlessly-- I went ahead and did this admittedly indulgent because I knew I wouldn't work out on my own, and I had to start taking care of my body. I KNEW how important it was. I was so happy about starting to see results-- and the minute I stop, I'm a total slacker again.

Having said that, though, I did take my dog for a mile and a half walk yesterday. She repaid me by stinking up the car something fierce with her fish-mud paws. Ugh.

Come on Nikki, you can do this!! I just read yesterday that exercising in 10 minute increments 4 times a day gives you the same benefits as exercising for 40 minutes straight. Do little things....park at the back of the parking lot, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, keep walking that smelly dog, just MOVE some each day!!

I'm four weeks into this lifestyle change now, so I thought I'd post an update.

I'm working out 3 to 5 times per week, with activities ranging from water aerobics class, to pilates, to walking on the treadmill in my basement, to using the ellipitical machine and recumbent bike at the local YMCA. Variety is a good thing!

I've seen a substantial amount of weight loss in the past four weeks, but that's not the only thing I'm excited about.

I'm excited to say that I feel great!!! ::yay:: My energy level has skyrocketed in the past four weeks. I never dreamed I'd be able to do a full 30 minute workout (+ 5 minute cooldown = 2.25 miles) on an elliptical machine without having to stop and catch my breath. I'm proud that I'm able to keep my heart rate up to where it needs to be for a good cardio workout for a full hour and not feel like my heart is going to beat out of my chest or I'm going to keel over. And I'm excited to see the changes in my body and my overall attitude towards food/and life in general.

How about the rest of you? How are you all doing?

I have not eaten especially good this week, see female issues above, but am going to strive to be better next week. My work snack at 3pm needs to be hummus and carrots or celery because it satisfies the need for crunchy with out chips!

I'm getting a bit frustrated now...

Maybe you have hit a plateau and need to shake things up a bit with your workout routine. I have read that if you do too much cardio your body will send itself into "starvation mode" and start storing fat, just in case.

Make sure you're drinking lots of water, to help flush all of the bad stuff out of your system, especially after exercising.

And are you lifting weights? Because it may well be that you are converting fat to muscle, so the scale doesn't show the differences that are truly happening to your body.

And don't forget, when you're working out and eating healthful foods you're still getting the benefits of becoming more healthy, even if the scale isn't showing it. So "keep on keepin' on"!!

A fellow wench turned me on to a great weight loss support blogging site that's really informative and supportive. PM me if your interested and I'll be glad to help get you started.

Yay at least I am not the only one getting moving!! I get to shake off some baby fluff, its not as easy as some people make it look!
But I have to get back in some sort of shape or my butt is gonna drag this summer working at fair!

So I have started to walk with Little Bit in a baby backpack and also I dance with the Doodle Bops on Disney. I kid you not that is a heck of a work out, just ignore the music and it works really well!

I wish I could get back into belly dancing but the classes are at 7 at night and that just does not work with a munchkin! So I should dig out Neena and Veena and do that too.

Keep on truckin girls!

My scale hasn't moved much lately, especially this week of the month, but I keep getting comments from people about how much I've lost, so I figure something's going, even if I don't see it very well.

Last night in measuring my waist to be sure what size Silver Squirrel skirt to order (TYVM Gellis for probably turning me into an addict as well:lol:), I discovered that my waist is down about 3 inches from the last time I had a skirt made (late October/early November). Looks like the bellydancing is working, at least there... now if I can just get it to work on my hips, legs, ummm....
