Can there be such a thing as eating too much grapefruit?
Every week, I buy about 2 dozen grapefruits, take them home, section them and put all of them in a huge bowl.
I can usually eat what is equivalant to 2-3 grapefruits at a time.
Is this a bad thing?

Not really, unless you're watching your sugar intake.. you can't OD on fruit! :-D

I was just wondering about the acids in it and aside from the...*ahem*...side effects.

I'd watch the vitamin c hun. Something about too much C settling in your joints & causing pain. I'm not positive on that, its just something my Mom told me awhile ago. Your regular doc should have the answers on this question, though.

Grapefruit is a diuretic... among other things. ;-)

Eat enough of it at one sitting and that's what you'll be doing later.... sitting.

Thanks for the info.
Funny thing is, I don't like drinking grapefruit juice.
I like eating grapefruit.
Quite a bit of it, in fact.
And no worries about meds for me.

Well yeah - but eating the fruit, you'll automatically get the juice... lol. But good on the no meds thing. Here's the issue with the 'sitting'. Kinda gross, but...
After hearing him describe his diarrhea as "explosive" and full of air, I immediately thought of solute diarrhea. This kind of diarrhea can happen when a person consumes more of the small molecules that bind water than the body can absorb. Typical examples are too much vitamin C (most people get this kind of diarrhea if they consume more than about 5 grams a day) and candies sweetened with sorbitol (a kind of sugar substitute with fewer calories and not very well absorbed by the body). As his vitamin C content was only about 1,000 mg/day, and he consumed no artificial sweets, I next asked him about magnesium. Too much magnesium can cause the same symptoms, while a deficiency can, in some people, cause migraine headaches.

I'd worry, too, about the acid. I limit my grapefruit to one a week - all personal preference, of course, but just because of the acid.
In addition to wearing at the enamel of your teeth, imagine the wear and tear it's doing on your stomach and esophagus.

One med that's not mentioned is birth control. My sisters are pharmacists and they both say grapefruit can alter the effects of birth control pills, but I'm not sure which kind is affected.

I have heard that vitamin C jus flushes out of the body if there is too much..
As for the umm other problems try cutting down to one a day that way you are still getting all the good stuff and ypu might loose the bad ones.
If I remember correctly from my diabetic classes, the thing with grapefruit juice (or even OJ) is it increases the absorbtion rate of medications. So if it is time released it absorbs too soon and if it isn't, the acid can absorb the medication so you don't actually get it in your system. It may even be all citrus that effects it. But I specifically remember them mentioning oranges and grapefruits. We were told to make sure NOT to take medications with either of these fruits. For instance, we can take our meds before breakfast with water and then after like 15 minutes, then eat a half a grapefruit, just not at the same time. This was also years ago and I may be remembering it wrong.

So if you're not on any meds, and you still have all your teeth, and you're able to function without being umbilically attached to the bathroom, I'd say don't worry about it until you have to.
Though, having said that, moderation in all things, right? Is there something else nummy you can throw in every once in a while?

Oh, I eat mangos (also by the truck load), grapes, plums, apples, oranges, etc...
I just have this thing for grapefruit.
I mean, I've been known to section out 7 grapefruits and eat the entire 2 qt. bowl full in one sitting.
It's my candy.
By the by, when I say section out, I cut off all the skin and literally take out each section of fruit in one piece, sort of like you see in the jars in the store.

Except for a few extra pounds, according to all my blood work (every 3 months for the past 18 months), and all my other exams, I'm just ducky.

"Why is the grapefruit always gone?"
hmmmm -- I wonder what grapefruit sprinkled in just a touch of spiced rum would taste like???

I love grapefruit, too. And grapefruit juice. But I found out it counteracts my SSRI (depression) medication - so now I only indulge rarely. <insert pout here>

No problem DaB. I eat enough for a whole bunch of Wenches.
In fact, I just sectioned 20 3 days ago and then bought 20 more after my ultrasound on Friday.
