LONDON (Reuters) - More than 160 feral cats and kittens have been rescued from the site of the London 2012 Olympics as demolition work continues at a pace.

A local animal charity has been allowed access to the site to ensure the safety of the cats that have taken refuge in the various industrial buildings that are being bulldozed.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said Friday that 168 animals had been discovered and were now in the care of the Celia Hammond Animal Trust.

The ODA, which has also re-housed newts, frogs and fish from the east London site, said demolition work was expected to be completed in March with construction on the main venues beginning later this year.

Yeah for saving the fuzzes. Boo to the fools that let them out to live in the streets.

Yeah again for moving the other creatures!!!!

They deserve a round of applause for the rescuing they did. We just rounded up a feral colony at my friends house of 15 fuzzes ....but WOW 168 Kitties amazing they still have hands.

It's nice to see something positive being done for these animals.

I'm wondering though, if this wasn't the site for the 2012 Olympics, would these animals have been ignored?

I have a feeling the group working to rehome them would have gone in no matter what the site. They sound like good people. Besides which, in London, IIRC, an archaeological study must be done whenever a site is dug up to begin any construction. I believe that's how they found The Rose and its neighbour, The Globe. That gives a rescue group more time, I'd think.
