What scares me is that would be pretty good writing for a lot of the parents here.

Poor writing on my part too. I was referring to the parents in the town where I live.

*wonders when was the last time she got an excuse from her parents when a student was absent*

I got a letter once from a parent describing how long division was too hard to send home for a 5th grader to do. They went on and on for over a page telling me that neither parent, grandparent, neighbor or babysitter could do the long division problems. I wont get into the spelling and grammar problems...

I would say that about 20% of my parents are flat our illiterate, add to that the Non-English speakers..
Yikes!

I was having a problem at the beginning of the year with parents not sending notes when their kids were absent or were leaving early. I tried mentioning it in my weekly letter, I tried putting it on the website, I mentioned it at conferences...nothing. So, finally, I told the secretary in the office that none of my children were leaving my classroom unless I had a written note telling me they were leaving early. And I stuck with it. Now I usually get notes. As far as notes for being absent, I hound the parents til I get them. Legally, I have to have them! I don't care if they are "too busy" to write a brief note saying the kid wasn't here or won't be here, I'm not getting sued because Jimmy got hurt while he was at home and because I don't have a note saying he wasn't there, the parents are saying it happened at school!

Hang a sec... I thought - if there wasn't an excuse card from the parent - the student was marked truant, which results in a hefty fine? Am I wrong?
