So, last Thursday, we had VERY little food in the house. I've been having problems eating enough, so I bit the bullet and decided to use the brown rice I had and added it to some meat and veggies to maybe give myself more calories. Now.. I haven't eaten rice in months. My diet is mostly vegetables and meat.

Next day, I'm nauseous. Very sick, I go to the doctor and get a blood test.

Well it turns out, my blood sugar was really high. So now they want to test me for diabetes.

...

Four years of eating clean, with no weight gain and lots of working out, and all of a sudden, I might have magically developed diabetes.

What. The. Hell.

Unfortunately diabetes is something that can hit anyone at any time, but it doesn't mean that you have it. It could also be a very sporatic thing that doesn't need to be controlled through insulin, especially since you do have a healthy lifestyle. It could also be that your body chemistry has changed and you had a reaction to the rice. Let the doctor check you out, but don't let them automatically say it's diabetes just because it might be the easiest diagnosis.

I think you're probably right.

If it isn’t a reaction to the rice, and I think its probably the rice, you could possibly be pregnant. If of course that is a possibility, I don’t know how active your umm . . . Private life is. Nice thing to know about that is that once the pregnancy is done, the diabetes usually goes away as well. :-D And it would be cute to see a little you running around fair.

Be forewarned though, it is generally a sign that you will be come diabetic later in life, but with your eating habits I wouldn’t worry about it. And there are ways of cheating the insulin system, but you don’t want to do them very many times because it would be unhealthy and your doctor would lecture you to know end if he found out.

Unfortunately once the doctor does the test, if he determines it shows you have diabetes, then it's on your medical record. My husband was diagnosed 4 years ago with Type 2 and even though all his tests now show his blood sugar is normal, he's still classified diabetic.

Don't settle for the simple blood test. If it shows you have diabetes, ask for the all day glucose test. You'll have to spend a few hours at the dr. office drinking icky stuff ever few minutes and getting your finger stuck, but it's a more accurate representation of how your body reacts to the sugars.

The good news is you are already used to eating a diet that is geared for diabetics. If you are, it won't be a big change for you.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that all this is just your bodies reaction to carbs after not having many, though.

I believe that carbohydrates break down into sugar during digestion, which temporarily kicked up your blood sugar. Also since your body is unused to sugar, it made you sick.

Thanks guys, your ideas make a lot more sense than me having diabetes.

And no, DEFINITELY not pregnant!
