Dammit ... you just took all my fun away! Can I at least make a comment about how the reactor hasn't finished cooking you yet and you need a few more minutes back aft?

Your looking good Speed! keep up the good progress :)

Thanks. I've been training to do a sprint distance triathlon. It's gonna be a 400 meter (roughly 434 yards... roughly 1/4 mile) swim (the training for which is kicking my ass handily), a 20 kilometer (about 12.5 miles) bike ride, and then a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) run. I did a practice triathlon last Friday... swam about 300 meters, rode about 4 miles, and ran 1 mile. I did it all in about 1.5 hours, which is how long I want to do the real triathlon in. I have to step it up a bit. I ran a mile today in 7.5 minutes; all I have to do now is get to the point where I can hold that pace or better for 3 miles. The bike ride part is gonna be a breeze... I once rode 30 miles in 1.5 hours with a 15 minute rest stop in the middle.

*psst*

Gimme time. I AM training for a triathlon. I should start running without a shirt and with some SPF 4 sunscreen or something.

Yup...
for this assignment we had to do an analysis of Book I .... (of course the Prof didn't tell anyone that this was what she wanted the paper written on until late Sunday night...and the paper was due yesterday. I had already read and did the outline for one of Mary Wroth's pieces that's in the text. I asked if I could go ahead and do the piece on Mary Wroth and the Prof wa "no.. I don't want to have to go read that so that I know what you are talking about. argh!)

I have another paper due next tuesday that encompasses the entire thing...only 2 weeks to read the entire thing and try to understand it...it seems a bit much to me

I am really glad that you like Milton and Paradise Lost but me...yeah I hated the thing the first time I read it 12 years ago...and Now that hate has transformed into an all consuming blinding hatred of Paradise Lost

Good luck on the triathlon! Even if you wear spf 15 or even 30, and train without a shirt, you will still tan with that amount of exposure.

She's got a point. More over, I only have one kilt with me until I get a sewing machine or SM ships me my others. I pretty much had to bring everything by way of the sub, and storage space is at a high premium. I could only manage one kilt.

lmao... I'm usually pretty good about not sharing everything with the world. Besides, I think it's just wrong to get utterly trashed at faire. Maybe AFTER faire (though, we never get invites to after hours parties), but during faire is wrong. Tipsy, I have no issues with, but once you get to the point where walking is laborious in and ofitself... you've had too many. Oh... and send some of that meade my way! (Garsh I wish I had me some of that Mt. Hope meade right about now.)

This was after faire. We were camping at TRF, he got a good deal on the bottle. He wasn't drunk until the walk back to camp. Had he been drunk in faire, he'd have been hauled out and tied to a tree for the rest of the evening.

I was strething in front of the mirror this morning and this is what I saw:

I showed that to SM, and she called me up specifically to say "rowr!" Then later, she said my torso looks like a wolf's face. Anyone else see the wolf's face? *shrugs*

And please... no comments on the tan. I've done nothing but swim, ride, run, and play on my computer since I got to Hawaii. I'm nicely tanned on the back, but near-deathly pale on the front. lol

More on the saga. I've started tracking measurements. The measurements I'm tracking, except weight, are merely to calculate Body Fat Percentage (BF%) using an online calculator I found.

I started last week, and the numbers looked like so:
Weight = 232#
Neck = 18"
Belly = 40.5" (*grumbles*)
Arms = 15" (BTW... this is a 1.5" INCREASE since November 2006!)
Thigh = 26"
Chest = 45" (Which goes quite well with my 51" shoulders)
BF% = 17.5%

Now, it's a week later and here's the numbers:
Weight = 227# (though I am SOOO not worried about weight... if I weigh 230 at 14% BF [or less], how hawt would I be?!?)
Neck = 18"
Belly = 39" (*grumbles while dancing just a little*)
Bicep = 15"
Thighs = 25.5" (where it's usually bad to lose... they look firmer, so I can only assume I shed some fat)
Chest = 45"
BF% = 16% (can you say "WOOT!")

I noticed this week that the calculator shared the following other numbers:
Lean Weight: 190.68 lbs
Fat Weight: 36.32 lbs

This week alone, I have ran 8 miles total (since Monday), ridden 40 miles total (since last Saturday, really), and spent about 90 minutes total killing a heavy bag. I haven't eaten so terribly well, as stress has taken a toll on my diet.

So... you think I should stick to triathlon training?

Where's the website for that tracker? I've been looking for something like that for a long time; I've set up a program in excel that'll tell me my BMI by using height and weight. But I know that's not nearly as accurate as figuring it out like how the recruiters do.

BMI is ludicrous. You should never put faith in it. According to the BMI, every one of the top professional body builders are "obese." BMI does not account for musculature AT ALL. Hell... the BMI labels Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as obese. Not to mention his buddy John "Triple H" Levesque.

As for the calculator... I joined a site called GetAnEdge.com. It's essentially designed to present you with a triathlon based work out plan, based on your desire (fat loss, weight loss, muscle gain, etc). It allows you to track you cardio and strength workouts. It links out to a calorie tracker, but you can't save your intake records. It's halfway decent, though I'm quickly getting to the point where I only like it for the BF% calculator.

When I went to see the Navy recruiter last year (nothing happened, I decided to head back to school to become a merchant mariner), he gave me a few pointers on cheating this (figures). Try to make your neck as big as possible and it'll throw your stats in the right direction.

That's all I could think about when I signed up with the site. Is it free forever? I sort of like the plan they had set up for me. Although, the swimming thing is going to be rough. The school's pool is closed for the summer so I'm going to have to dive into the ocean. Any ideas on how to keep time without having a watch on while I go swimming? If I'm going to be doing the ocean swimming thing then I have no idea how I would be able to hear an alarm.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for the site!

Yep. I don't need to use that. My neck really does measure 18" which is huge by Navy standards.

There are some companies that sell "swim metronomes" which are designed to help triathlon racers time their strokes for maximum efficiency and energy economy. They also have timers built in. The metronomes attach to your goggles, so you essentially hear them due to the vibration against your skull.
There's also a device called SwiMP3... a water resistent MP3 player that lets you listen to music while you're trudging away at your laps. I think it has an alarm built in. Personally, I haven't had any time to get in any of the swim workouts. The last time I went swimming, I just kept swimming untill I was completely exhausted... then I ran a mile and a half.

Well folks... the weekly weigh and measure has happened. Here's the thick and thin (mostly thick, but some thinning):

Weight = 227# (holding pretty constant at this weight; wanna get down to 215ish for extra zip in my triathlons, though)
Neck = 18" (this is destined to never change, I'm sure)
Belly = 38.5" (can you say MINUS 1/2 INCH!?!)
Bicep = 15" (Ok... I don't think this is gonna change as long as I'm training triathlon style.)
Thigh = 25" (Yes... my thighs have lost ANOTHER 1/2 inch)
Chest = 45.5" (this gives me a 1/2 inch gain. Looks like the heavy bag routines are good for something!)
BF% = 15% (AND FEELING GOOD!!)

And now, I get to go underway tomorrow and ruin it all. :(

Well, folks... just back from a 10 day underway. The day before we left, I came down with a cold that took my voice, my ability to breathe reguarly, and all my energy. Needless to say, I didn't get to work out much underway. In fact, out of 10 days, I was only able to squeeze in three 45 minute workouts.

I say only three, but wait'll you get a load of these workouts. For starters, they installed a VersaClimber in the engine room. Can you picture 2800 feet (overall) of climbing? Wait... there's more. Can you picture high intensity MMA style punching and kneeing? (steel walls make better heavy bags than you would think) Can you picture body weight work? Can you picture yoga? If you can picture all of these alone, then picture this: 4 yoga poses (kills about 2:30 total) followed by 15 elevated pushups (my entire body was supported on stantions which allowed for about 2' UNDER my body for me to go really deep) followed by 200 feet on the VersaClimber followed by 5 minutes of mock MMA work (that's what I've dubbed it... you know how killer an ab workout throwing knees can be?) then repeat. That's what I did 3 times for 45 minutes each.

So, what are the results you ask? Well...

Weight: No data... haven't been near a scale in almost 2 weeks.
Neck: The ever present 18"
Chest: 44.5" which is down a half inch. Could just be fat loss, though.
Arms: 15 1/8" for a 1/8" increase
Thighs: 24 3/4" for another 1/4" decrease.
Calves: 17", but you can ask Moe... my calves are SOLID
Gut: drumroll... 38" for a 2.5" decrease since May 24th-ish
%BF: According to the calculator I've been using... drumroll... 14% which is down about 2.5% since May 24th and down 6% since May 1st!!

Update on the Plan...
Things were going quite well there for a while. I'd gone out and bought some size 36 Dickies work shorts... they're now LOOSE on me. *dances* My newest kilt is a 36, and it fits nicely at the midway adjustment point.

My latest workout routine had me packing on some lean mass by way of heavy weight lifting. I've been getting my cardio by way of fighting, MMA style, with a guy that weighs 75 pounds less than me but moves wicked quick, a guy who weighs 55 pounds less than me but is about 3" taller and also wicked quick, and a dude who weighs 60 pounds MORE than me and is fairly strong. We've been taking good care to fight safely, though aches and pains still find their way in.
In addition to the fighting and the weight lifting, I still have only a bicycle to get around with. Rolling up 100 to 200 miles in a week is not entirely far fetched for me. I rack on at least a mile a day just going to work and another when I come home (not always a round trip in a day as I pull 32 hour shifts about every 4th day).

So, for the last 2 or 3 weeks, I've been having some pains in my right knee. I've talked to the corpsman about it; this guy's been getting run ragged lately (last week, they shut down the refrigeration system and left all his refrigerated medicinals in one of the chill boxes... while hot gassing) so he and I agreed we'd wait a little longer until he could devote quality time to my situation. Fine. It wasn't debilitating pain, so I was cool with it. Then Friday came along. Heading down onto the boat, my foot got caught on something and caused me to twist the living hell outta the bum knee. So after gutting he pain for half the day, I tracked down the corpsman and told him the deal. He did some feeling around and some poking and prodding (and causing immense pain) and came to the conclusion that nothing is broken. There is the possibility that something is torn and he was 99.8% certain that I'd hyperextended the thing.
I was able to handle this diagnosis until he hit me with the news: No running (I run 3 miles a week to keep limber), no cycling (:unamused:), no lifting requiring the legs (um... like 90% of my routine uses my legs), and no fighting. My entire workout regiment was destroyed in one fail swoop... and I'm essentially grounded to my room now.

Woe is me, eh?

Injuries suck. And they definitely put the brakes on an intense workout routine like you've been following.

But sometimes they are your body's way of telling you to slow the hell down and give it a bit of a break! Don't push your knee too soon, even though I know you'll be chomping at the bit to get back to your workouts. Take care of yourself, and those award winning legs of yours! :wink:

WAAAY too much of what I love to do so much relies on my knees... I'm taking it easy with this injury. I just hope it isn't worse than Doc expects.

You are looking so good!! too bad Ban won't be at Faire this season (possibly for the next 5 season) because of USMC boot camp and deployment or he'd give you a run for your money.

ca't wait to see you at CTRF!!

Why, thank ya, m'lady.

Due to recent events with my knee, I'm tightening my caloric intake up a bit. Gotta knock some more fat off!

BTW, I'm not so certain anyone would be interested in knowing, but... I bench pressed a personal best 205# (for one rep) on my last trip to the gym. I'm shooting for 230# (which will have me bench pressing my body weight). Wish me luck... only 25# to go!
