View Full Version : I'm feeling confident...

As you all know, I've been training for a triathlon lately.

Today, I decided to do a practice tri that's half the distance I'll have to do for the real event. I did 225 meters (actual event = 400 meters) in the pool (wearing basketball shorts, not the slick swim shorts triathletes usually wear), then took about 8 minutes to switch over to the bike. I went for a 6.7 mile ride (actual event = 12.4 miles), took another 6 minutes for transition, then ran 1.6 miles (actual event = 3.1 miles; the Navy's Physical Readiness test coming up in 2 weeks is 1.5 miles 8-) ). Total time was 59 minutes, 30 seconds.

Given the fact that I'm certain I can shave a couple minutes off each split, and that my transition times for the actual event will be about half as long... I'm feeling pretty confident that I can finish this triathlon in under 2 hours.

Oh yeah... and last Thursday, I did a 1.1 mile run right after swimming 150 meters. My time for that 1.1 mile run was a relatively phenomanal 7 minutes, 30 seconds!!

Way to go. Those are great times for the events. You are gonna nail that event when it gets here.

It's definately looking good. Thanks for the show of support.

Did I mention they have what they call the "Clydesdale Class?" It's a class for men over 200 pounds and women over 150 pounds. Since I consistently tip the scales at 230... I'm in there. :) There can't be THAT many 200lb + guys running in this thing. lol

Clydesdale Class huh???? Somehow I Just don't get the feeling that that class is named right ... Not for the times ans speed you seem to be showing. Perhaps they call it that because of the grace they see in that class.

*shrugs* I dunno. It's one of 3 classes I qualify for. Everyone has the age group classes. I can compete in the All Military class, but that puts me up against SEALs and Navy Divers and SpecForce Marines and Green Berets and whatever gungho group the AF and CG have... I wouldn't stand a chance (I know a couple Navy divers who run the Navy's 1.5 mile PRT in 8 minutes... I'm expecting 12 this go around). Then, because I'm a big dude, I can opt for the Clydesdale class. I'm going with my gut... pardon the pun... and choosing the Clydesdale class.
Regardless, I'm going to stay optimistic about this. I'm gonna watch what I eat, keep working out and training, and work my ass off to shave some time. My goal is to beat 2 hours!

I think you'll manage that just fine. Any man who can sew, survive an iceberg crash and do all the other things that you do can do anything that you set your mind to.

lol... Well, I didn't have much to do with surviving the iceberg crash, but... thanks for the vote of confidence. ::yay::

Good for you, speed! That's some serious athletic prowess! You must be in awesome shape. Gotta chuckle at the name, "Clydesdale" class though.

I'm getting there. It's certainly improving my physical appearance. Right now, the goal is finishing this triathlon in under 2 hours. Beyond that, I have the goal of winning the 2008 CTRF Men in Kilts contest. *flexes* I'm feeling ready!

So that's what all of this is REALLY about!!
Great job Speed! Keep up the great work!

Well... in '07, I was essentially the first loser in the CTRF MIK contest. This year, I'm gonna be ripped and buffed... and I'll still have the tongue that I can touch my nose with. Women seem to love that.

Thanks to everyone for the big show of support.

Jezze, how do you do that? I’ve been exercising for the past 4 months, since they gave me the go ahead after my little guy was born, and I haven’t been able to do a mile under 10 minutes. I think I’d pass out if you asked me to do all that. Never mind the rest. What are you some sort of bionic machine? You don’t know how jealous I am right now. BTW, you look great.

Bionic? Me? I wish. I keep hitting a wall at about the 1.25 mile point for the run. Then there's the swim... 75 meters, and I have to rest. The ride... psh... child's play. (This IS the guy that did a 100 MILE ride in one day to raise money for the Lung Association of NH.)
In November of '06, I was 2 seconds shy of failing the Navy's fitness test (1.5 mile run in 14:30 or less... I ran 14:28). On top of that, it was a struggle just to pass at all, not to mention they fudged the numbers so I would pass body composition. I had had enough of it, so I started working out much more, started watching what I eat (for the most part), etc. Then I decided I wanted to do this ti, just to say "I finished a triathlon!"
I tell you one thing, though... the sound of my wife's voice when she saw the pics of me now... *shudder*

And thanks.

Speaking of confidence...

On the 6th, we did our Navy fitness test again. I was dehydrated and feeling like shit, but I STILL pulled out a 12:40 1.5mile run! At this moment, I feel good. I ran 1.5 miles this morning and never even had to stop to walk. Sunday is the triathlon.

I'm estimating about 18 to 20 minutes for the swim, 35 to 45 minutes for the ride, and about 28 to 30 minutes for the run. The goal is to finish in UNDER 2 hours, but 1.5 hours is feeling pretty doable.

I'm hoping everyone wishes me luck Saturday night! he he he

Good luck SK! It sounds like you should have no problems kicking butt in the triathalon!

I feel like I've had enough exercise for the week just reading about your training! Hahahah!

So is this the big triathalon on the Big Island? If it is - thpth! I love the Big Island, although my idea of a triathalon is shop in Kona, turtle watch at Punalu'u, and Mai Tais on the lanai. Good luck & you're already a winner in our eyes!

Not a snowball's chance in Hell. LMAO

I'm going to have enough trouble with the SHORT triathlon I'm running here on O'ahu... an Ironman is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY outta my league.
